So here is my attempt at a depth chart. There are quite a few positions up for grabs so obviously a lot can change between now and September 4th. Most of my picks are based off of a players previous playing time and doesn't necessarily represent their talent level with respect to other players on the team. Spring camp will most likely help sort some of this out for the coaches. To give you an insight as to my process, I used my recap write-ups, the 2009 roster which is still available on Hornetsports, and the most recent game notes. (The game notes were from the Causeway game just in case you are wondering. )
Offense
QB) 1: MBT 2: Murdaca/Carmazzi
I'd like to see Sperbeck open the starting QB spot to ALL QB's in camp for the sake of competition bringing the best out of everyone. Given the way MBT finished the last half of the last game of the season, as of now I give him the nod.
RB) 1: Hilliard 2:McCowan/Wilkins 4: Smith/Croxdale/Anyone else
I think a few RB's will see considerable playing time. Hilliard will obviously be the power back and McCowan/Wilkins will be put in for speed. Assuming everyone stays healthy, I don't see Croxdale getting much playing time unless it's on special teams. No idea what to expect from Smith, we'll find out this spring. The newbie Douglas should be redshirted.
WR) 1: Reed 2: Hendershott 3: Lane/Richardson 5: Willis 6: Larson
Reed, Hendershott, and Lane are locks to see a ton of playing time. I'd like to see BOTH Reed and Hendershott break the 1k yardage mark in 2010. Reed probably would have done it if he didn't get a slow start to last season. All are seniors so I don't know if the two new WR recruits will redshirt or not. Either way we have a solid group of receivers for 2010. I wouldn't be surprised if Sperbeck ran a considerable amount of plays out of a 4 WR set this season.
TE) 1: Krebs 2: Carter 3: Bobak/Maciel
Carter is the bigger of the two so I would think he would be in on the run packages. Based on the stats I have to assume Krebs has the better hands. Both players will see a fair amount of playing time. It will be interesting to see who will be groomed for the TE position in the future as both Krebs and Carter are seniors. Bobak and Maciel were both freshman last year, they both have size.
RT) 1: Doverspike 2: Weaver
RG) 1: DePauw 2: Tannenbaum
C) 1: Taylor 2: Pfaff
LG) 1: Harrell 2: Tannenbaum
LT) 1: Born 2: Weaver
Ok so I have no idea who will be starting on the OL. The only lock I have as a starter is Taylor at center as he has started every game for the past two seasons. Doverspike started every game last season but he is listed at 250 pounds. As good of a job he did last season, I'd be okay if a heavier and nastier player challenged him for the spot. Harrell is another guy that has the leg up on a starting role. He came over from Hofstra after they folded their program and was the starting center and is in his last year of eligibility.
The bottom line is for the most part, all the skilled positions are set but there are a lot of starting spots up for grabs on the OL with a lot of big underclassmen battling for the spots. This will be something to watch in spring ball.
Defense
According to some rumors here on SacBuzz, the Hornets are making a move to a 4-2-5; it will have an interesting impact for the LB’s. After thinking about the 4-2-5 a little more and taking into consideration the players that are returning, I'd like to think of it as a 4-3 with one of the LB's serving as a "rover" type of role. We'll see which direction the new DC goes in come spring camp.
DE1) Nash
DE2) S Maumau/Heaslet/McKeon/Salter/Anyone else
Nash started 9 games last season and is probably a lock. Heaslet saw action in 9 games last season as well and it will probably come down to him and S Maumau (I think he is a DE due to his lighter weight). There were 3 high school recruits landed for DE so there will most likely be some redshirts at DE this season.
DT1) 1: Clark
DT2) Laban/Lawrence/Agaiava/Fukofuka (Fofa)/Barrett/ M Maumau/Anyone else
Clark is an obvious lock to start. Laban and Lawrence were both freshman last year and will probably be the leading candidate for the starting spot on the other side of Clark. Not sure is Fofa will be redshirted but with his size he could have an immediate impact on the line. Given that a lot of players rotate in and out at DL during a game, it's safe to say all of these guys will get their chances in camp and in the regular season to show what they can do.
I’m pulling for the Maumau brothers so opposing offenses can be “mauled by the Maumau’s”.

MLB 1) 1: Pereira/Warner
Pereira went down with an injury last season and Warner filled the void. This one is a tossup. Both will be seniors but Pereira touted recruit out of Santa Rosa JC, I have to lean his way here. Either way both players will probably see a lot of playing time and have their chance to shine.
MLB2) 1: G Johnson 2: Coleman
This one is a tossup as well. Johnson started more games so I went with him. Both players will probably see considerable playing time with whoever shines the most in spring and summer camp getting the starting role.
It will be interesting how the two MLB positions will be handled by the coaches assuming a 4-2-5 scheme is run. I think whichever LB's step up and show they can play will get the nod. This will be another interesting battle to watch in spring ball. Given the fact that as a whole the LB crew is fairly young, I think the incoming high school recruits will be redshirted.
CB1) Smith
CB2) Reddic
CB3) Monson/Willis/J Johnson/Fesser/N Jones/Everyone else
Smith is a lock as he started 9 games last season. There were a lot of underclassmen CB's last season so this will be another position where whoever shines the most in camp gets a possible shot at the #2 starting position or nickel back/weak safety (obvious passing situations) spot. I put Riddic at #2 because he was listed as a backup CB at the end of last season and played in 6 games. Monson is an incoming JC transfer so I would think his abilities are near the top of the group but I really don't know. The high school DB recruits will probably be redshirted due to all the returning underclassmen.
SS) 1: Buck 2: White?
WS) 1: Schrader 2: Martinez
FS) 1: Gordon 2: Willis/Martinez
Buck made the move from SS and filled in quite well, but now he will probably be moved back to a “safety” position. He is probably a lock as starter as he had 80 tackles and has a knack for finding the ball. Not sure if they will try and plug White into the SS role but with the abundance of LB’s and taking into consideration of the 4-2-5 change, the speedier LB’s with range will probably be tried out in the SS spot. I don’t know who might fall into this category. Schrader and Gordon are locks to be the starters imo, both started every game last season. Martinez is a mid-year transfer and I don't know what safety position he has experience at so I listed him as both WS and FS. Also with the young DB's on the roster from last season, I have no idea if any are specializing as CB or S.
Basically aside from a few spots, I think a lot of defensive positions will be up for grabs in camp. The good news is there is size at both LB and DL and there is plenty of youth. Seeing as a lot of underclassmen will be returning, I think a lot of the new defensive high school recruits will be redshirted. However with the new DC being confirmed, I have no idea what direction he will take with respect to which players will play and what type of defensive schemes will be used. Either way the Hornet defense has a lot of improvement to make and there are a lot of underclassmen to mold. It will be an interesting year.
Special Teams
K) Diniz
P) Heath
LS) Badger/Anyone else
The only question here is who will be the long snapper. No comment necessary for the returning kickers, both are returning players and they should do well this season. As far as the return specialists go, I won't spend too much time here. I will assume the most explosive players with the ball have a shot at these spots.
I left off/didn't mention a lot of players returning as I just don't have any idea as to how they fit into the equation so I apologize for that if any of them are reading this, I mean no disrespect. As someone on the outside looking in, I can see a lot of the defensive starting spots being up for grabs. All I can say is if the coaches play the best players, this defense has the potential to greatly improve and an offense that can be dangerous with the ability to score points on the ground or through the air.
Go Hornets!
