Downing had an excuse, Collins doesn't

This reminds me of UNC football circa 2006-07 when we were god awful, but remember Downing didn't have full scholarships and his predecessor didn't care about recruiting. Collins himself has said we are not rebuilding and there is talent on this team. I don't care if the players come on here and get their feelings hurt. They can't blame any fan for being really, really, frustrated. I'm hoping Collins is the right guy, but he needs to get better assistant coaches.

That many penalties is inexcusable and a serious red flag... It makes me wonder WTF is going on behind the scenes.

Same here. I think the talent is there, but something isn't right. There isn't any excuse for ISU beating UNC by 30, NONE at all, yeah the reffing was shitty but still. Lobato isn't the answer, he looked horrible for the most part.

Two issues here in my mind---and money isn't one of them. This athletic department ponied up to get Tad Boyle after he turned us down once, and we've had the money to pay guys such as Greg Peterson (Like him or hate him he's got an impressive resume) to coach here. First, Jay. This "He gets a free pass because of the success in hoops" idea has to stop. Secondly, Earnest Collins is giving me flashbacks of Dan Hawkins the more I watch and listen to him. His we're not rebuilding talk is the same type of crap Hawkins got away with in Boulder for five years ("Ten wins and no excuses", "We've just got to cinch some things up"). Funny, it sure looks like he's trying to rebuild a disaster of his own creation these first three games, as Lindenwood and today (Its not that we lost---its the way we went about losing that is disturbing) rank right up there with Downing's clunker against Chadron in terms of the three most embarrassing losses of the FCS era IMO.

Can he improve the team enough to somehow win a game this year? It's looking like 0-11 is probable, if this guy is worth anything the team will improve but the team I saw today couldn't win in the RMAC and that's pretty much rock bottom.

I'm at a loss right now with this team. Part of me says that the talent is just awful and we'd probably be in for a really bad year regardless of coaching, but there's another part of me that says there's no way we should have lost to Lindenwood at home or gotten blown out by Idaho State. I just don't know who to blame, the players, the head coach, the assistant coaches, the AD or whoever else.

Until yesterday I was thinking Collins deserved a year before he could fairly be judged but ISU's Coach Kramer seems to have found a way to make instant progress and there are a lot of new coaches who go into programs and turn them around instantly. I didn't think it was possible to be any worse than Downing but I'm almost convinced that Collins is the worst coach in the history of football with Downing running a close second to last. It seems that Kramer knows how to motivate the players by setting up schemes that take advantage of each player's strength but our coaching staff seems to have taken a huge step backwards.

Lobato looks like a prototypical QB but he doesn't stand in the pocket long enough to let the receivers get open and his accuracy is atrocious. I have read a couple comments about the RMAC and it's funny because that's what I was thinking watching the game--we would be a mid-level RMAC team--at best. I really can't see how we will win a game this year.

My other thought was that CSU should be in an all out panic right now, only being able to score 5 points on us in the second half means they probably won't win another game this year either.

Collins doesn't use talent he does have and scratch this no huddle offense, it looks like everyone is in disarray! The time spend in the huddle would at least get everyone on the same page! Use Doug Steele and the other tight ends, they can catch the ball! The tight ends are tall and strong, not using them is ridiculous!

One thing I gathered form listening to the coaches show last night is that Coach Collins does not have the talent to execute the system he is running right now. He said several times that the players need more coaching and they need to recruit better players. He wasn't quite throwing the players under the bus but he wasn't praising them either (except for some of the defensive line and linebackers).

Doug Steele starts and had a catch in the game. Also would have had a touchdown but the ref didn't call the obvious face guarding against his defender. The same call we got called for earlier. Stupid Big Sky refs.

I agree, I think we lack talent, we have some but just not enough. But that being said, I think you can utilize the talent that you have right now to the best of their ability, which I don't think is getting done. I think the lack of talent or the places that need talent the most goes back to the Downing era, he never addressed the needs of this team on the offensive side. The offensive struggles aren't anything new, we've seen it year after year. UNC has never had a running game, the O-Line has always been below average, and the QB position has been iffy for awhile. The last solid QB UNC has had is Waggener. Plus the loss of Jace Dave and Cameron Deen hurt as well, I think those two (especially Davis) could've help this year.

Brian....I was very disappointed to read about Coach Collin's response on the coaches show. As I have posted before, this situation will reveal the character of the coaching staff. It is easy for any staff at any level who inherits a team to blame failure on a lack of talent that the previous coach brought in. If Coach Collins said several times that the players need more coaching.....well fantastic! I am under the impression that they are COACHES, soooooo COACH them! I believe that many of the players were recruited when Darnell was the OC, and ran the same innovative spread look that this staff has attempted to run. That means that in somebody's opinion the kids were suited for this offense. Outside of the fact that coaches are hired to coach players, I am very disappointed that Coach Collins would even come close to putting it on the players and not accept responsibility for his team....especially this early in the season. I he is in that type of panic mode now, how will it go for the next couple of months? There's a lot of football to play.
I could not listen to the coaches show, and frankly, I am glad I did not. Brian, you said that he "wasn't quite throwing the players under the bus".....I guess my question is why even come close to that? What's the plan for approaching the rest of the season when things may not go well? I guess I was taught that quality programs believe that when a TEAM is successful, it was the result of player efforts, and when they didn't perform well,it was coaching (We all realize that's not always the case, but it's been the approach of almost every successful coach I have seen in any sport).
As I stated in a previous post, we go forward....TOGETHER. I hope the staff buys that philosophy at some point!

One last thing, then I will gladly shut down.
We (UNC) recruited these players, many of whom were all-state caliber players. If We recruited them, asked them to come here, then why all of a sudden are they not good enough? I guess (putting strategy aside) that coaches are paid to develop players on and off the field. Why come close to throwing the players under the bus?

Great point! My guess would be the coaches are in a panic and don't want to get fired. Let's face it, none of these coaches have a proven (successful) track record. To bring coaches with you from a mediocre Alcorn St wasn't Collins' best move. These guys know if they fail now they are likely to forever be assistant coaches or better yet, high school coaches. Just because you play college football does NOT mean you're a coach.

I am really looking forward to Saturday's game and specifically the starting lineup. Coach Collins said in the paper:

“I am going to find 22 guys that want to fight, and fight until the very end,” Collins said after the Big Sky Conference opener. “I am going to find 22 guys on this football team that want to fight for me day in and day out, and it’s going to start tomorrow in practice. We’re going to find 22 that want to play.”

I want to see if he is a man of his word! If it's the same 22 guys then we know his word to the players and fans is worthless. And if this happens will the players battle on the field for a man they have no respect for?

Lets hope for your teams sake that there are still 22 guys left that want to play for this coach.

All these musings and armchair quarterbacking are a direct result of freakin "LOSING " !! I don't care how you cut it, its all about winning !! All of this losing does nothing but breed contempt, frustration and self doubt. The only answer is too start winning. Like mountainbear said earlier, we are all in this together and all of us can help bring a winning attitude. But freakin when?? Go Bears

Holy Cow! I've been gone 2 years, and Beardown still has his head up Downings ass, and is blaming Daltons staff for not recruiting. I would have thought/ hoped that you would have come up with a new rant. How bout this, give Collins the time he deserves.
