Downing out at No Colorado

Downing finished his five seasons at UNC 9-47 overall and 5-35 in the Big Sky Conference. Hinrichs said the current staff of assistants will remain on staff at least until a new coach is in place.
Wow. Take away the 3 wins this season and this guy was given an extension having won only 6 games in four years. How would any sane AD give this guy an extension?!?
Downing became the 15th coach of the Bears in December 2005 after spending three years as the recruiting coordinator at the University of Nebraska, where he also coached tight ends and kicking specialists.
This is why you hire someone with head coaching experience. We learned this the hard way with the brilliant Moosh hire. Any UNC posters have any input as to who is the leading candidate to replace DOWNing? :?:

I am not a fan of firing coaches based solely on win loss records without considering other circumstances that may be involved. Both Zamberlin 6-38 at ISU and Downing 9-47 at UNC had more than enough time to show some progress and they failed. Frankly I am surprised that their schools took so long to pull the trigger. As I recall we once had a basketball coach, Don Newman who was allowed to compile something like a 20-120 record before his excuses wore thin. The fans and administration can only hear "we're at the crossroads," "we're turning the corner" so many times before losing faith.
