Dr. Gonzalez just announced his retirement at the end of the school year at his Fall Address.

I just heard that President Gonzalez will retire at at the end of the school year. Any thoughts about how this will affect the school or athletic program?

Interesting development. He did a lot during his decade+ here, got a ton of new facilities built, endowment grew substantially, helped initiate some academic programs most people don’t care about, and he helped grow the profile of the University within the region.

He was also supportive of athletics. Sure more could have been done for athletics, but there were no programs cut when the economy hit the skids 7 years ago, and he forcibly raised the athletics fees to bolster the budget. Biggest complaint I’m sure we all have is that he didn’t get the event center built…maybe his parting gift will be to forcibly enact the student approved fee for that facility.

As far as the future…well I guess we have to wait to hear which candidate will be floated for this position.

Gonzo has been a great president. Very supportive of Destination 2010 that got so much accomplished but missed on some things. But he backed the vision and goals and got a lot done. And a huge supporter of Div I athletics as the school that became Sacramento State for the long haul and only CSUS in actual terms. He did want a new events center and upgrades to all sport facilities and did his best to take a 67 year old campus with many aging buildings that need replacement into the future. . May Gonzo have a productive final year and do as much as he can to take Sac State towards iv. I relevance. The Sleeping Giant known as Sac State woke up a bit under our Gonzo. A school with hundreds of thousands of alumni with the 20th largest media market in the US ( 2 million people) has so ,so much potential. Confident that the next president of Sac State will take good care of the jewel he/she gets to take care of and imagine amazing thins..

Meh, he folded like a paper tiger when the facists (faculty) threatened him with removal.

Really thought he would be the catalyst that elevated Sac State to at least the level of Fresno or SJSU. Obviously that didnt happen.

Better than Gerth, but that is not saying much.

The University and the athletic program are light years ahead of where we were under (Larry Bud Melman) Gerth.
I think there was a lot of pressure against change by the faculty and not everything that Dr. Gonzalez proposed could be done. I thank him for his vision and efforts. I think if you compare our entire program with Fresno or SJS we are at least competitive or better in everything but football. Had Fresno and Nevada not jumped to the MWC and the WAC fallen apart I think we would have found it worth the investment to go FBS.

I will give Gonzo some credit for increasing the budget and the Broad, but the organization and success is attributed to Wanless.

Glad you went out as a winner President Gonzo in the Causeway Classic. May you have a great retirement.

And may you work in your final six months to get us a new President who will truly be passionate about getting us a new football stadium and a new arena for basketball and put an actual campaign in place. The football program and basketball program has improved so it is time....
