Dunn Interview in the Mirror

A couple of juicy quotes from Dunn in a recent interview he did with the Mirror-

The Mirror: Would you say that's unique to UNC or have you seen it in other programs as well?

DD: I think at this level, at this Division I level in the Big Sky Conference and in some other conferences that are similar, I think it's more about graduating student-athletes. There's a lot of great conferences and great teams that focus on graduating their kids. I'm just saying here in this conference, especially at UNC, that is more important that winning national or conference championships.

The Mirror: Do you have any comment on the football team's performance so far ?

DD: I think that our team is playing really hard. I think it is a close, tight-knit team who care a lot about their head coach and their assistant coaches, and they don't want to lose. To me, to start a quality program, those are the most important things. I really believe Coach Collins has done a great job of getting the team ready to compete.

And let the rants begin.....

He is saying what he has to say to keep the team from imploding on itself. We will see in the next 3 weeks if this is true or not.

Really Brian, 3 weeks? You know the answer now in 3 weeks Collins will just be the same incapable coach he is now....just 3 weeks older!

And if Dunn even remotely believes what he said about the players liking their HC and assistants he is just as out of touch with reality as they are and this program is doomed forever!

Well, all evidence points to you being 100% right but until that happens, I will hold out hope and hold my tongue/keyboard.

OK so here’s my issue with what he said. This program has been an embarrassing disgrace for a decade now and people just don’t want to hear this stuff. Yes, of course he’s right, their job is to graduate players but after losing so much people don’t want to hear about that they want to hear that they are committed to winning and all efforts will be made to develop a winning program and we need everyone’s commitment including the fans and students and alumni. You know, like a pep talk, a rallying cry… Reading about graduating players is noble but really to me just reinforces we accept losing and expect to continue to lose but don’t complain because we do things the right way.

Dunn = Excuse cannon.

We got rid of the real cannon but it looks like we now have an excuse cannon.

I guess it comes down to the fact that he sees something the average UNC fan or alumnus doesn't see. Let us not forget Collins does have a termination clause in his new contract. If it's another 2 or less season, he must be fired, or knowing the little I do about Collins himself, I wouldn't put it past him to resign.

I think both Mr. Dunn and Coach Collins know the score and both will react when its time. Yea Collins got lucky last year by not being let go and then With Darren coming in late in the game, I don't think he was in the proper position to fire anyone yet. Kind of like the last regime passed the buck (crap) to the new guy so I really don't think its fair to be ragging on Dunn ! And if we are just cruising along at 1-5- or 1-6, I can see Collins being let go mid season ! Geez I hate all of this crap. This is what years of losing creates !

Unfortunately no matter what we are stuck with Collins and company for the remainder of this season. Dunn would look like an ass if he let Collins go mid-year due to record after what he let himself get documented saying n that interview. It's gonna take exit Interviews from players to get rid of this clown at the end of the year. Dunn needs documented support to change his stance. Anyway its at least two years too late at this point

Speaking of Kansas we should hire Mangino that would be awesome, he'd never come here though... He's the only guy that could do anything with KU, then they thought he wasn't good enough for them and they have been bottom feeders since.

Dunn's statements aren't really all that different from anything he has said previously, but every time he regurgitates the same basic thoughts it just stokes the fire even more for me. So much so that I was going to go on a rant of my own but I will let the excerpt from this do my talking for me-

"The Impact of College Sports Success on the Quantity and Quality of Student Applications"
Devin G. Pope* and Jaren C. Popef

(1) football and basketball success significantly increases the quantity of applications to a school, with estimates ranging from 2% to 8% for the top 20 football schools and the top 16 basketball schools each year, (2) private schools see increases in application rates after sports success that are two to four times
higher than public schools, (3) the extra applications received are composed of both low and
high SAT scoring students, thus providing potential for schools to improve their admission
outcomes, and (4) schools appear to exploit these increases in applications by improving both
the number and the quality of incoming students.

Not to mention winning builds support from the students, community, alumni and boosters which means $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Are you seriously that out of touch that you think these kids are only there to graduate? They didn't choose to be at UNC because they wanted to be on a losing team. Yes, graduate the kids. But you NEED to win!
