It always hurts to lose a game we should have won, but I'm glad we have a tough schedule. If we can't beat tough teams during the season when it is not necessarily do or die then what good would it do to go to the playoffs with a weak schedule and get bounced in the first round like MSU.

The hard part is our margin for error the rest of the way got a whole lot smaller.

Our conference will test us plenty along the way, which is why we don't need a brutal conference schedule, we will play plenty of ranked teams in conference.

2010 we played FBS Nevada, home (kind of) against Central Wash, and home against pre big sky SUU. Besides the D2 game in Seattle, that is the perfect schedule and it worked out pretty well...

Here's the bottom line. We can't do anything about the schedule and until we build a stadium worthy of bringing in more non conference options without return trips, this is what will continue to be done. The coaches and players don't complain about, and in fact seem to embrace it. Injuries are a part of the game and can happen against any opponent. Did we not lose a starting offensive lineman last year against Western Montana?

The Big Sky obviously hasn't challenged us enough the last few years because it's masked our bad defense. These power MVC teams are our criptinite and seeing them early in the year and knowing what to expect later on is better than scheduling some cup cake D-II team that doesn't count for anything.

This team is 0-2. When we win our next two games, we'll be 2-2 heading into a bye week. We were 2-2 in 2010 and 2013 and those years turned out pretty dang good. So relax and enjoy the ride.

Rant over.

Here is the problem, we go 7-4 the next couple of years, maybe 6-5 and miss the playoffs, then we lose all the momentum we had for the Gateway or whatever expansion of the stadium we have. We crushed all our 2010 national championship momentum with 7 road games including our first 3 road games in 2011. Does anyone understand how ridiculous it was that we played a one game series at south dakota in 2011?

As far as 2013, yes we were 2-2, but we had to beat an FBS team to get there, that is not common and we don't play Idaho every year.

What I'm trying to say is better non conf schedules lead to more wins, lead to more playoff games, playoff home games, and exposure. More victories and exposure lead to better recruits, more wins, and then more $$$. Waiting for the gateway project isn't going to work because we are a few years out still for anything in that regards.

The loss sucked yesterday, i'm just hoping it opens some eyes in terms of how we schedule

Well said. Coaches are coaches. Players will function as part of game plan as required. Put the best out there and Support them.

Your thoughts are understandable but it's no different than arm chair coaching. Do you really think Chaves has not considered all of what you've said?

There's more to it than simply dialing up Prairie View and penciling in the win.

To All,
I agree with everything that have been said on the blog. We are all here to express our feelings of each and every game, plays, etc. We are not the Coaches, let the Coach(s) call the plays etc. Seems like some of us are attempting to criticize our Coaches, I hope not. It is very nice for us to express our feelings like I said earlier. Stop attempting to say who should be playing where, what position, when, and why they are calling plays, etc. I am not angry , just don't like how some on the blog are so damn critical of the Coaches. I know this is Freedom Of Speech. Just remember any of us could have been in the position the Coaches are in, how would any of us feel if we were being criticized? Now let us all Buckle up and get ready for a hell of a game this Saturday. Don't want any of you feel like I am attempting to be the Police Of Our blog. Let us attempt to keep it civil. Go Eagles!!!!! and "GOOD NIGHT! Vic Wallace

Preach on, brothers Vic and ewueagle2010!

I really, honestly, do not believe Chaves understands the damage he causes by not making a good schedule. I'd love to see Jim Allen ask what he's working on; hell, I wouldn't be afraid to ask myself. Chaves didn't take much heat in 2011 for the debacle of 4 home games because we instantly improved in 2012. But we've made the same mistake this year, and we all hope it doesn't lead to another lost season.

Chaves has great talents in managing our budgets and getting incredible levels of success with very little expenditure from the university. He has done a fantastic job attracting and maintaining coaches... And I don't mean just Baldwin, the rehire of Wade Benson was smart and the new soccer coach Bodnar has immediately taken that program to new levels. Keeping Dave Cook on board has made Eastrn's online profile better than many FBS programs.

But he also has weaknesses that are magnified to a large degree by Eastern's inability to hire someone to help him out. We need more fundraising, and by extension, facilities improvements. And as it relates to this topic, our football schedules are Gawd-awful. Maybe this will never be a strong suit, and that's fine. But stop making the same mistakes that can potentially end a season before it begins.

Anyone want to chime in on the scheduling for the other athletic programs? I am not a follower of "one off" sports (tongue in cheek). In order, BB, Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf and Track.

When Chaves came on board his mantra was "character, competency and consistency". Has he met his own bar? From my seat, he has.

BTW, not a fan of the early schedules for the football team the past several seasons, but believe Coach B has some say in some of that.

Well I know Larry Weir asked Bill Chaves about scheduling just last week in the podcast. He also mentioned how some don't like the scheduling and I thought his answer made sense.

Not sure about other Sports, but Basketball has always had a tough schedule. Look at this year. We have 13 non conf games, 4 of them are at home, only 2 of the home games are against D1 opponents. Basketball is a little different though, because the only way we make the Big Dance is by winning the conference so it makes no difference who we schedule in non-conference looking at the big picture.

As far as Chaves, he has done a fantastic job in a ton of areas. I have nothing but compliments for him in all areas except scheduling. I'm also sure there is A LOT more than we know about scheduling, just wish it would at least be brought to the table a little bit more...

I'd say scheduling in football makes substantially more difference in the quality of team you produce than any other sport for two critical reasons:

1. Injuries, especially injuries that require lengthy recovery times, are far more prevalent in football. Playing a bad game against a team with a style that causes injuries or on a bad surface can cause critical problems that last far longer than a single weekend.

2. There are far fewer games played in football than other sports, so a single loss can derail an entire season. Think about 2012, if Eastern loses to FBS Idaho the first week of the season, we'd have finished 9-3 and opened in the first round. In that scenario, the odds of us being 3 points away from the finals never materializes.

To All,
Greeted the Coaches, Players, and Eagle Nation Fans on their arrival at the Landmark Terminal (Chartered). Everyone was very frustrated from the way the game turned out. I am also, but we must suck it up and hope we come out with fire in our eyes Saturday. MSU is no slouch, they will come to play, especially since they had a day off Saturday. Followed team back to campus, spoke with Coop, he said he will be alright. Nic Sblendorio was in a frame of mind, when Coop went out with his "Hip Pointer", he really went after everything thrown to him, I think he had 150+ yards on receptions. Glad to see Stu Stiles with a catch, and Zach Eagle getting into the flow of the game. Hope to see some of you tonight at Coaches Show at Northern Quest (Impulse) to listen to him, and see some f the films of the game. Starts about 5:30 p.m., meals and drinks can be ordered. Even the One Arm Bandit can be played if you want to win/lose your bread (money). Hope some of our injuries will be ready for the game Saturday. (REMEMBER IT IS RED OUT ON SATURDAY), we all wear RED if you can. Go Eagle!!!!! Vic Wallace
