Injuries? I totally missed that he had been removed from the roster online...

These things are never announced...and nor should they be. The humiliation of not being able to maintain a C average is embarrassment enough for these student-athletes who can't make grades.

Yep, I can confirm that this is indeed the case.

That is too bad, I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with some more minutes. His rebounding numbers were really excellent.

Did anyone advise him on his schedule during is RS year? He did have 2 semesters and a summer session to get some of his more challenging course out of the way. The student is ultimately responsible, I'm just wondering if he was advised properly. I mean he was our best player. Did the staff do everything it could have done to assure this wouldn't happen?

I think this caught Katz totally by surprise. If he was aware of the acadmeic strength of his best player and thought it might be a concern, he didn't plan on. McCarver and Rak were used sparingly at best and an opportunity to develop them and prepare them better was lost on this past season.

Also, if he though he might lose a post player, why target all perimeter players during recruiting? It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of this long and painful basketball season. hno:

I’d say Dickson is our best player and Alpha was probably the next best, but it doesn’t matter now. I agree his redshirt year should have given him and the coaches/staff time to figure out his academic path. I would like to believe the coaching staff did all it could to make sure he was on the ball as far as grades are concerned, after all every player Katz brought in has supposedly graduated so this would be the first academic mishap under Katz. As you said, ultimately it’s the student’s responsibility to get things done in the classroom.

Also agree about Rak and McCarver as far as experience goes. They will have a lot of catching up to do and hopefully they can fill the 6.0 points/game, 6.6 boards/game & 1.1 blocks/game Alpha was averaging last season. :|

FWIW, Alpha landed at CSU-San Marcos' newly formed NAIA hoops team. Interesting read on the players that coach was able to secure given the different rules the NAIA has from the NCAA:

Alpha N’Diaye, a physical power forward from Mali, was pegged as one of Sacramento State’s top returning players before he, too, was declared academically ineligible.

I was able to catch part of the second half of the game last night while on campus. and have some thoughts and revised depth chart.

1. Magd Owayed and Kendell Groom did not play, how 'bout that SD?

2. Jackson Carbajal played some shooting guard and looked like he picked up where he left off last year. Poor ball handling, unpredictable shooting, and SIX turnovers in NINE MINUTES. He's not equipped to compete at this level and a NAIA school that won two games last year ate him up. He did have a dunk in the game which kind of threw me for a loop, but that was about it.

3. "RAK" looks improved, but still very raw. I think his nice rebounding last night was due to the quality of the opponent.

4. Walter Jackson might be our best all-around player this year. He looked healthy, solid, and athletic. He's been a nice Katz pick up and one of about 4 (maybe) players on this team who actually look like they belong at the DI level.

5. Dickson looks bigger, but needs to stop shooting terrible threes. I think he shot like 15% from behind the arc last year and last night he was 0 for 4. He needs to do what he does best and that's be athletic, get to the rim, and nail some short-range jumpers.

6. Konner Veteto is a large man and will be a playable big body that the Hornets haven't had since Zane Beekman.

7. McCarver will show flashes this year, but NAIA big men made him look bad a couple times. Looks like he played 5 minutes, not a single tick on the Box Score. Not even a foul.

8. Joe Eberhard might be the surprise of the year. He wasn't a big scorer at his JC (could have much to do with the quality of his teammates), but he sure looked like one last night. He has a physical build, but I worry about him matched up against an athletic wing.

9. Dylan Garrity went 6 for 6 from the line and had 9 points, 9 assists and 4 rebounds against two turnovers. Katz might not RS this kid after all.

10. Jordan Estrada has the skill set of Mike Marcial except he likes to shoot more which could get him into trouble. 1 for 8 from three point land last night. Ouch.

11. Julian Demalleville got in for part of the last minute of the game and made two free throws.

12. Heath Hoffman hit a three but only played 7 minutes.


Overall, I was happy to see some improved free throw shooting, but for much of the second half a 2-win NAIA school played pretty evenly with us. We were only up 8 points for a long time. I don't have a good feeling about this year, but could be wrong, who knows...


Based on last night our most competitive approach might be....

I didn’t listen to any of the game, but I did look over the box score and read the Hornetsports recap.

Shocker considering it was an exhibition game and I would have thought Katz would want to get looks at everyone. I guess we can continue to expect to see Groom on the bench especially if Garrity is not redshirted (probably isn’t considered he saw 30 minutes of PT).

Yikes. That's a lot of turnovers against a NAIA team. Probably another reason why Garrity most likely won't be redshirting.

2/2 from the stripe and 7 boards with 3 turnovers in 11 minutes. He’ll probably be getting a good amount of PT behind Veteto. We’ll see how/if he progresses.

Agreed. I saw the stat line and cringed when I saw his three point numbers. He seriously needs to stop playing behind the arc and get to the paint.

11 points including a perfect 3/3 from the line, 8 boards, and 3 turnovers in 21 minutes. He did foul out though which hopefully isn’t a problem going forward.

7. McCarver will show flashes this year, but NAIA big men made him look bad a couple times. Looks like he played 5 minutes, not a single tick on the Box Score. Not even a foul.

He didn’t see much PT last season and didn’t see much last night. I doubt he sees the court much this season. I have no problem with this so long as Rak and Veteto are out playing him to earn the PT.

We need this guy to step up and provide some sort of offense this team will be lacking this season. Hopefully he can play at this level against real competition.

Not bad for a true freshman. 30 minutes of PT probably means no redshirt for him.

Free throw numbers are a lot better than usual and that's a good sign. The score is meaningless in this one as I assume Katz used this game to geta look at which players he wants to use the most. The amount of turnovers is alarming though. That has plagued this program ever since Katz arrived, hopefully it finally gets cleaned up.

Just so you know K, if I get my season preview out, I'm going with this line-up.

I'll say this, Dylan Garrity is the real deal. He was very crisp in his passing and creating opportunities for the others. Kid is going to be a good player and with how bad Groom is (kid cannot dribble at all), there probably was no thought at all to redshirt him (Thank God!).
