New faces, fresh start motivate Portland State defense

I reckon something like 36-14. Burton isn't big on running up the score against smaller teams. Assuming we could do it. Eastern seems to have a a big OL and a good WR or two. May not be the blow out people seem to think it will be.

I think this is going to be a pretty wide margin on the scoreboard when it's all said and done. Something like the Southern game a couple years ago.

It won't be a deal where Burton runs the score up, but one where the defense wants to dominate. They've looked better in camp this fall and I suspect that as a unit, they will have a bit of a chip on their shoulder given their performance last year.

With all of the overhaul on this year's roster, I don't think we'll drop more than 42 tomorrow. Yes we beat SOU two years ago by 52, but we also had a more experienced roster coming in. This year we're young and talented, but don't quite have that experience yet. I'm thinking more of a struggle in this one (of course, that is subjective) as things fall into place.

You're right about our team being young. Look for a lot of penalties. But Marty may have a point on our defense. They have a something to prove after last year. 42-6?

I don't see where we are going to have any trouble putting points on the board. In our skill positions on offense, we have Shaq Richards, Lilley, DJ Adams, Mcdonagh, Carter all with a ton of experience. The line will be solid, we have several seniors while not having a ton of game experience, that have been in the program and know the system. Darnell Adams played in 9 games last year, not many catches but he was in there. Offense will dominate this first game.

I agree with GreenGiant. Our experience on the offensive side, as well as the success they had last year, makes me believe our offense will put up a lot of points. The way the defense has performed this fall camp has me believing EOU won't score that much as well. I think it would be a disappointment if we saw the offensive and defensive 1's play past the mid 3rd quarter.

One more day!!!

57-17. I was a little off. http://www.bigskyfans.com/vikings/posting.php?mode=reply&f=2&t=3229#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;: Lots of penalties, as expected. The Fumbles, though, were really bad. That has to stop. Nice to see Penn and Ramirez get some time. And how about that Tago! Admittedly, he was running against an exhausted EO team. Well, that went as expected. Next week will also go as expected I'm afraid. I hope that we've at least got the penalties and fumbles out of our system. Go Viks!

Agreed. A few observations. The QB's looked solid. The OL really opened holes for the RB's. The RB's looked really strong - all of them, except for the fumbles - ouch! Special teams need work. I was a little surprised our DE's didn't get to the QB more, perhaps because EOU played out of the shotgun the entire game. And penalties reared their ugly head because of lack of DISCIPLINE. Personal fouls are not where we need to go.

Well, the season is upon us. We're 1-0, so that's good.

What a sloppy start to the game. I think it was about half way through the first quarter and we'd only had one offensive play (fumble).

Here's some things that stood out to me:

- Penalties. 16 for 139. This is unacceptable. Let me repeat that; unacceptable. This is on the coaching staff. I get it when you hold due to getting beat, but we had the athletic advantage tonight where we shouldn't and don't get beat. This had better clean up, stat.

- DJ Adams looked great. Did Shaq really put the ball on the turf twice? Other than that, he looked good as well. Lilly had strong yards as well. The offensive line seemed to be great tonght.

- Was that Dunn that fumbled a punt and had that backwards return tonight? Not good for special teams.

- Loomis = boomis. Only one official punt (52 yards), but that other one that I believe there was a penalty on was a big one.

- Kickoffs were all over the place. Multiple kickers that ranged from pooch kicks to kicks in the endzone. Good?

- Couple of drops from the receivers, but overall, I think this position should be a solid one.

- We seem to be quite talented at tight end.

- QBs. KM is going to be dangerous this year. He looks like a jr/sr running this offense. I was quite impressed with Penn as well. Very speedy with the ball.

Without the mistakes tonight, we'd have probably won by 50.

Hopefully we can clean up some of the bad things, like penalties and fumbles, and work on some of our strengths in the Cal game.

I'm still worried about PSU secondary. There were a lot of wide open receptions by the Mountaineers. PSU will be able to put big points on the board in any given game, but if they give up bigger points it's going to make for a long season. We were without our best LB so I'm taking a wait and see attitude.

I thought they were preaching discipline. There is nothing disciplined about personal fouls that happen after plays. If they get the reputation of being foul prone, watch out. There will be laundry all over the field every game.

I'm glad they scheduled this game, even though it won't help if the playoffs are in the future, it gives them another week to work on obvious weaknesses in their game. There is a big difference when the defense doesn't know the plays being run against them and running against your own guys every day.

Oh, one other thing, this about the uniforms. I kind of like the camo look on occasion (I know the players like it) but the numerals don't stand out enough and I am constantly second guessing the identity of some of the players. Maybe it's just my deteriorating vision, but it would seem nice if the numbers were white or silver.

PSU allowed an NAIA team to rack up 430 plus yards at over 5 yds a play. I'm not feeling a whole lot of confidence. I hope "Mr. Defense" Nigel Burton can get it together.

We did a pretty good job stopping their run - they picked up 150 yards over four quarters. So they had to pass - 250 yards worth. But look at it this way; they threw twice as many passes as we did, but none of their passes resulted in a touchdown. And we intercepted 4 passes (while throwing no interceptions ourselves.) I'm not worried about our defense. I'm much more worried about our penalties and turnovers.

On the other hand, the Big Sky, in general, airs it out. Let's hope the game plan for EOU was just not give them the big play. As I mentioned earlier one of my concerns was not getting to the quarterback. We have a slew of TE's that should wreak havoc. One the other hand, we didn't seem to blitz much either. Perhaps it was just game planning.

2013 Portland State Football Week 1 -- Earn the Logo

Coach Burton and the Viks faced Eastern Oregon to open the 2013 season. As you will notice the Viks were without their trademarked Viking head on the side of their helmet. The right to wear the Viking logo is not given, it is earned and this was a chance for the Viks to earn the right to wear that logo. In the end the Viks defeated Eastern Oregon 57-17 and will face Pac-12 opponent Cal in week two. Was their performance in week one good enough to earn the logo? Watch live on the PAC-12 Network at 2PM to find out. Go Viks!

Is that chant at the end of the game a new thing (well, brought back). I remember that from the Walsh days.
