Frustrated with the lack of coverage on the CSU game, and every other game every other week, I decided to email Bill Bradley. Below is my email to him followed by his response. One of the responses really bothered me, the one about attendance. How is a team supposed to get people interested if the local media doesnt care for or promote. The Bee is a local paper, it's not the Times or the Chronicle, people in the Bay Area don't read this piddle. :x
Good morning Mr. Bradley,
I was just wondering why the Bee isnt covering any local college football, there are two games tomorrow and there has been nothing in the local college sports section covering them. I have had to read papers from Colorado to get any analysis on the Sac State game against Colorado State, it amazes me that our own local paper cant do this. The Colorodan even had interviews with Sperbeck accompanied with an in depth analysis of the previous weeks game, not to mention the paper in Fort Collins! There were over five articles between the two papers covering the game. Sac State is less than five miles from the Bee and Davis isnt that far away either. I'm sure that even a phone interview with the local coaches would yield some good information that could be used in an analysis of the games tomorrow.
"Thanks for writing.
We don't devote much time to day-to-day stories about the local colleges because there is very little interest in the programs. Neither draws more than 10,000 a game, we get few calls more coverage and the page views for both teams on our Web site is incredibly low. In fact, our studies show there is more interest in Cal and Stanford in this market than Sac State and UC Davis.
We increased coverage for a few years (2005-2006), but it didn't cause an uptick in reader interest. Plus, they are both in Division I-AA conferences. The team Sac State is playing, Colorado State, is in the I-A Mountain West Conference. They have far more interest in their markets, which is why both Denver papers and the Fort Collins paper cover them heavily. Plus, Colorado State is the only thing in town in Fort Collins.
We are a very different market than most and I truly wish college football had more interest here. However, just two years ago, Street & Smith's called this the 264th out of 265 markets in terms of college football interest. Every bit of research I see is that study was right.
Thanks for reading,"
