Embarrassing loss

Why was Gubrud left in the game? After throwing 3 horrible picks tonight and repeatedly turning the ball over all season long, when is enough enough? It's time to sit Gubrud's ass on the bench and give EB a shot. He can't be any worse than what we saw tonight.

Sorry, but I don't think Best is going to bench one of the most prolific QB's in school history in place of a redshirt Freshman who's only played a handful of snaps. If EB3 were the better option he'd be starting right now. He's not ready.

Embarrassing loss? No. Very few people here gave SUU enough credit going into this game. They are a very good team. And when you don't bring your A game against a team like this you get beat. That's what happened tonight. As far as benching GG, that's a joke. He had a bad game. It happens. He will learn from it and get better.

Based on performance, he should be benched. Our other options are a RS Freshman and a true Freshman so I doubt it will happen. The ironic part is that we had a chance to make Reilly Hennessey the starter last year and didn't. Now he's tearing it up at CWU.

I think we win out from here. Weber is the toughest remaining game and we get an extra week to prepare for them. We'll be heavily favored in the other two.

I have no idea what team you are watching if you think Gubrud is the problem. Four turnover today, two which were on him. Custer had a fumble and Webster ran away from a ball in the flat that allowed the safety to jump a route. No chance you can pin that on a QB.

Plus, we threw fly routes a lot tonight. Not once did a receiver step in and make a play. We used that same route for TD after TD last year, and now we can't find a receiver who can run it.

And most importantly, Gubrud doesn't play defense. The DL is missing in action. No pressure, no ability to contain. We let RBs and the QB run right past us up the middle about 15 times. They had one drive where they converted four third downs, including three third and longs.

I thought Southern Utah was better than I thought they looked tonight. We just had a terrible game on both sides of the ball. It happens sometimes. This was scary because it'll leave a bad taste going into a bye week. We're in a position where we need to win two of our last three. I still think we can do it.

The only thing embarrassing here is you and JasonEWU. You are fair weather fans.

Also, our lethargic approach when we get to the middle of games finally caught up with us. We had a lot of opportunities to blow this game open early. Our offense sputtered and then our defense collapsed. I believe Southern Utah scored every possession of the second half except the first one. Hopefully this becomes a teachable moment about playing all 60 minutes.

Agreed. Those and a few others only come around to bitch when we're playing poorly. Notice how few posts there were from them when we won 5 straight.

Don't be a chicken little. SUU played great tonight; we didn't. The EAGS will bounce back fron this loss.

I think Baldwin would have put EB3 in for a drive tonight, but certainly not as a complete take over. 2012 as an example we made it to the semi's with a total 2 QB system, not sure Best is up for that kind of environment, nor should he be as a first year head coach.

EWU is still the best team in the Big Sky, but SUU and NAU are hot as hell right now.

Loss, yes to a very good team, embarrassing NO, I am still very proud to be an Eagle supporter.
How did you get to be an expert on the skill levels of our QB's? I am sure you must be at every practice to make that determination, otherwise why would you make such a dumb ass stmt?
IMO Gage may not have played a good game but other players made mistakes as well and I am not throwing them under the bus either. I believe Gage gave us the best chance of winning 1st qtr to the 4th qtr it just did not work out tonight.

Unfortunately, Sir, you are way off base and not even close, In my Opinion. I can only base my opinion on my 20 years of coaching High School football. The problems I see have VERY Little to do with the D-Line. The Dline doesn't cover people and they are not in charge of the LBs and safeties missing gaps and missing tackles. The problems are systemic and can only be addressed in the Offseason. I think it's time to dump this defensive scheme period. But just my two cents.

I have faith in the HC and the coaching staff. things will get turned around it's just going to take time. I think a lot of folks in this forum have unreasonable expectations. The last time I checked, this is just a game. It's not the end of the world, there are no zombies coming over the hills in Cheney. There is simply no reason for folks calling these young men out. These men are giving a 110% and I know they will get it turned around. But it will not be this year. GO EAGS!

Agreed 100%. There’s nothing wrong with letting a guy (who’s EARNED it) grab one maybe two drives.

I'll give you that I agree with your faith in the staff. The reality is we're not a great team but we've still managed to get to 5-3 and have a shot at the playoffs. But I don't know how you can look at our DL play and think it's passable, let alone good. The 3-4 is largely based around our lack of quality DTs. We've been struggling at getting pressure and our containment in both the front and on the edge. I thought it was very poignant how Kramer kept pointing out how Eastern just needed one guy in the middle to be a "stopper." We just didn't have it.

Also, we've completely changed our defensive scheme over the course of the year. We want to be a 4-2 team. We're supposed to be structured that way. But we've moved to a team that alternates 3-4 and a 30 front nickel. It would appear we've already dumped the defensive scheme.

Gotta say that I agree with both tomq04 and Dopa here. The DL was glaring this game. The pressure on the Qb during the second half was almost non existent. There were times when SUU had nobody to throw to, but was able to just shift around for an extra 4-5 seconds until a receiver came free. There should have been so many coverage sacks, period.

However, gotta say that this scheme isn't working and things definitely need to change in the off season.

No I I'm pretty sure it the same scheme overall but in the end they know what the issues are and like I said. It's not the dline. I think the fist step should be getting fundamentals down. Way to many missed tackles, blown assignments and turnovers. I think starting there will solve 80% of the issues
