"Weber State football freshman linebacker Emmett Tela has been named to the initial Watch List for the 2014 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the FCS National Freshman of the Year. The initial Watch List was released Wednesday by The Sports Network.
Tela is one of 21 players across the nation and one of just two Big Sky Conference players named to the list.
The true freshman out of Timpview High School in Provo has led the Wildcat defense in the first five games this season. He currently ranks fifth in the Big Sky in tackles at 10.6 per game. He has recorded double figures in tackles in three of the five games this season and also ranks sixth in the league in tackles for loss.
He had his strongest game of the season in the Big Sky opener at Southern Utah where he recorded a career-high 16 tackles. He had 12 solo tackles and four assisted tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in the game. The 12 solo tackles is tied for the sixth most in a game in WSU history and were the most by a Wildcat in a game since 2011.
The top first-year player in the FCS, whether a true freshman or a redshirt freshman, will win the award named for the legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State. The award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation Dec. 15 in Philadelphia."
Would be pretty sweet if Tela were able to win this award. Becoming the National FCS Freshman of the Year. YIKES!! What a start for Hill and his recruiting. :thumb:
By the way, really loving the effort being put forward by Garside. :thumb:
