END OF SEASON THOUGHTS

The team did not make any significant strides this year. Other similar programs that were in transition have passed the Vikings by. There is only one reason for this. We know they won't make a change. Same as it ever was.

Against all odds, Barney had a great recruiting class last year, mostly freshmen. Need to fill some holes, but improvement could continue next year.

2018 and 2019 conference records 3 and 5. Nothin' to see here. However, we did beat D3 Linfield in home opener attendance 3,217 to 3,200.

The top four BSC programs that made the FCS playoffs are also the top four in scoring defense statistics (conference).

It's pretty clear what our problem is.

Yet, only two teams managed to shut out a conference opponent this season, Sacramento State and, ummm, Portland State.

Barney needs to go. New offensive philosophy needed.

Which leads to the million dollar question, and replace him with who? It has to be someone who understands the situation that PSU football is currently in. Playing in a tough, offensive minded conference. Playing at an urban commuter school, whose stadium is 20 miles from campus. Playing in the shadow of two up and coming state funded Pac-12 programs. Playing in an area that gets plucked dry by other Big Sky and FCS schools. Who is coming in under those guidelines that is better than what we have?

Barney-Ball has become stale and predictable, but he does have a 3-yr starter at quarterback coming back and a strong cast of receivers. That alone puts PSU in the upper tier of the Big Sky next year. Add to the returning defensive starters and PSU should be better next year. The question is, though, how much better and will it be enough to contend. I'm willing to give Barnum one more year. The issue is that this administration has been more reactive than proactive. if Barnum does not get it done next year, there needs to be some things set to ensure a smooth transition to make sure we are on the way to improvement, and not trying to make it up after Barnum is gone.

True. We did shut out Idaho, and that was great.

But then we gave up 30, 31, 38, 45, and 53 points per game to close out conference play. Granted, we did play some of the better programs in the Big Sky in the later part of the schedule, but in my opinion if you give up 35+ points in a football game, winning is a shootout and something you can't guarantee on.
