EWU Eagles: conference opener

I'll tell you what EWU will finish top 3 in conference, they had #15 Uconn at 48-42 with 10 min to go in the 2nd @ Uconn last week.

We better play a hell of alot better than we did against NNM if we are to win this one.

They also lost twice to UC Irvine and got trashed by un-ranked Seton Hall and St. Mary's. Quality opponents, non the less, but Weber led a ranked UCLA for 10 minutes and was only down 7 early in the 2nd and I don't have any grand predictions for them. We know (or at least we hope) Weber doesn't have it figured out yet. I think there's any number of ways the top of the BSC could go regarding WSU, UNC, UM, UND and UWU. I believe any of those five could gel and win the BSC.

Vegas has us as 8 point favorites tonight. I thought it would be a little closer. I hope we have a few students come to the game.

Eastern is firing up 3s, just like they were last year. Last year their offense consisted of a high screen and then either a three point shot or a drive to the basket. Mostly, it was a drive, because we were taking away the three more often than not. They are attempting to do the same kind of things we are. That is why we are 1-2 in blocked shots. We are begging teams to drive on us because we feel we have good shot blockers and depth at those positions. That is why getting James back is important to our plans. We want them to drive, just not all the way to the glass. :thumb: :thumb:

Will we see James play tonight? We need to get out of the gate fast tonight. We need to get some stops early and establish Tres down low.

Hajek hasn't even been cleared to practice yet.

I swear James was suited up against new Mexico. I thought I saw him doing layups with the team before the game... But then again he probably would have played against N.M if he was cleared

He was suited up and warming up with the team at Pauley, as well. I think that he may play tonight. He has been working out for over a month. From what I saw, he was running and jumping well. I haven't been at practice for a few weeks, so I can't say if he has been participating in the contact drills. When I was there, he was jogging, shooting, but not doing contact drills or sprinting.

I'm excited for tonight. After a lackluster non-conference schedule, I am going to put my reservations aside and give this team the benefit of the doubt. The REAL season starts today!

How would he play in a game if he hasn't even been cleared to practice?

I don't think that was a recent Rahe quote. I'd be willing to bet an adult beverage that James has been practicing this week. This has been the timeline all along. :coffee:

Rahe coached a nice adjustment on Harvey for the 2nd half. I don't think he scored in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd.

We showed our rust, got a shaky start, but played well when it counted. That EWU team is going to win some games in the Sky. We didn't play our best, but won anyway. Hopefully we can start rolling.

ISU won big, NAU won in Mizzu, SUU was leading UND late in the second half, I would say that the league is wide, wide open.

This might not be the strongest conference, but this conference is going to be difficult for anyone to win, which is what will make it so much fun.

It was a good adjustment in the 2nd half to defend that kid or maybe our kids also we are not going to let one guy beat us. What I really like is in the first half when we were down they got out and started to run. Like I have said already none of the BSC teams can keep up and that EWU team has some good athletes. They couldn't keep up with us that's why they went to the zone, trying to slow the tempo down. Let's Go Wildcats!!!

Yes, that most certainly looked key in the turnaround. They were attacking on the fast break and showed their athleticism.
- Senglin is really going to have a great career.
- Gittens has mad skills but will need need to learn to rein it in at the right times and make good decisions-- he gets a little carried away sometimes.
- I loved Hill taking the challenge to try and defend #55 and the emotion he showed, and the 'oop to Hill? Loved it!
- Rahe bringing JR off the bench seemed to work (at least tonight.) Maybe JR is a 6th man?
- I thought Berry was somewhat in a funk tonight.
- Williams didn't have much going on tonight.
- I'm still worried about their post play. I know Tres has so much more and just seems to be struggling often. Rahe said they focused on the double-team with Tres but he did not seem to recognize it very often and kick it out. Combine that with Joel-- Joel had a great night on paper but was just getting worked on the defensive end mostly courtesy #55. Ours bigs are going to have to get more aggressive and consistent. I'm believing more what help Hajek might be able to offer. I'm not so sure their 3's will consistently drop the same on the road and will need more, better post play.

Overall, slow start (kinda typical), nice adjustments, entertaining game, and we saw some good things but most importantly, they got the W and protected home court.

:+1:
We really need someone on the help side when we throw the ball into the post. If our bigs get double teamed we need to start throwing the ball back out and knocking down those shots. Even if they recover on the kick out, quick ball work will still result in a good look. That will force them to stop the double and our bigs can go to work. Tres is one of the best if not the best big man in the sky but really hasnt had a chance to show it when he is trying to do too much shooting over double teams.
Just keep it simple stupid!

More than anything, that was nice to see. They were really looking for early baskets if they could find them. The last 10 minutes of the first half was the first time this year that I felt like we had some offensive flow.

Might be because Catcat finally brought his mojo to the Dee.

Looking forward to Saturday with hopes we don't look like we've never played the game for the first 5 minutes. Love to see some momentum carry over...

Last thing -- Gittens early dunk, oh my!
