EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos on Wednesday confirmed the signings of veteran free-agent defensive tackle Marcus (Chunky) Adams and touted rookie linebacker J.C. Sherritt.

Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman hinted about the signing of Sherritt, a former teammate of current Eskimos Greg Peach and Matt Nichols at Eastern Washington University, back in mid-February and the Adams story broke last weekend.

“(Eskimos coach) Kavis Reed and I both feel Marcus has much to offer,” Tillman said. “He’s an unselfish player who isn’t motivated by stats and simply wants to win. As much as any player I’ve ever been around, Chunky will stay after practice and help young players work on their technique and, unlike many veteran players, is willing to share tricks of the trade.

Adams, a five-foot-11 defensive tackle who is now down to 275 pounds, worked out in the off-season in Regina, where he spent the last eight years, and in Arizona.

Adams has appeared in 83 regular-season CFL games and eight playoff encounters, including the 2007, ’09 and ’10 Grey Cups. He has 129 defensive tackles and 12 sacks in his CFL career.

Sherritt, five-foot-11 and 212 pounds, won the 2010 Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in NCAA Division 1 subdivision. He is Eastern Washington’s all-time career leader in total tackles and is second in tackles all time in the Big Sky Conference. Peach had won the same award in 2008 before he joined the Eskimos out of EWU.

“J.C. may not be the biggest or fastest player we’ll sign, but without a doubt he’s one of the best football players,” said Tillman. “He’s a hybrid-type athlete, who’s smart, physical and is an outstanding open-field tackler.
