EWU fan looking to watch the game!

Hey guys,

As the title implies, I am and Eastern Washington Eagles fan hoping to make the trip to watch PSU vs EWU. Just visiting your forum, because I have agreed with the wife to make it a bit of a vacation at the same time. Neither my wife nor I have been to Portland and I was hoping to get some advice on must see landmarks, great restaurants, and areas I should avoid when getting a hotel.

Hotel? The Modera. It is downtown on the light rail line. Very nice. One transfer and you are at Providence Park where the game will be played. Restaurant? Higgen's maybe three three blocks from the Modera. Quality organic dining. Must see? Powell's Bookstore! Floors and floors, aisles and aisles of used and new books. On Burnside and a streetcar line. I'm sure you two will have a great time.

Depends, of course. There's a nice Chinese restaurant at SW 2nd and Clay, next to the Kerr Auditorium parking garage, called August Moon. Simple. Lot of value for the money.

I'd recommend a look at Zupan's market on Burnside. Note the names of the streets in an alphabetical arrangement.

Generally speaking, the inner eastside neighborhoods are really eclectic and offer a wealth of dining options and unusual shops.

You might want to also see if there is something worthwhile to take home from the Made in Oregon shops at either Lloyd Center or the Washington Square malls.

This is just a superficial smattering. There must be a good number of quality websites that go more into depth about such things. You may also want to read the clever book about Portland written by an Englishman called Fugitives and Refugees. Quite an eye-opener, if you can get ahold of a copy.

If the weather's decent, you might also enjoy a walk along the South Park Blocks (south meaning south of Burnside) leading up to the Portland State Campus Mall.

Being a Saturday, there is usually a farmer's market on the Campus Mall, and that can be lively and interesting to see as well.

Higgins is damn good... it's very seafood-oriented. If you're feeling some steak and really want to splurge some night, Ringside on W Burnside at 22nd (only a few blocks from Providence Park) will leave you drooling... definitely a taste of old Portland.

Brunch: Screen Door on the east side, maybe Mother's Bistro downtown... expect a line. Any brunch worth having in Portland will probably lack reservations and require a long wait. Lots of other options as was mentioned, specifically on the east side. However, you may also get mileage out of the food carts, especially the "cart pods" around downtown (SW Alder around 9th and 10th is the biggest, but there are many of these all over town with all sorts of eclectic options, including one practically on the PSU campus and another nearby on SW 4th). If you and your wife are looking for different food experiences at one meal, that is certainly the way to do it.

My warning about Modera; it's a refurbished Days Inn, so it's a bit of a tight space, good restaurant and bar below, not bad if you're budget minded. Hotel DeLuxe is close to the stadium if you'd rather do that. I know people who rave about Hotel Monaco or Ace Hotel (if that's still around). The quirky option, if you're into drinking...

...may be McMenamins Crystal Hotel. Not sure the Crystal has restrooms in any of the rooms, but the Crystal and other area McMenamins properties (Kennedy School, Edgefield, Grand Lodge) have multiple bars at which you can imbibe and pretty much encourage roaming around with your drinks. The beers aren't as good as nearly every neighborhood brewery in the area (of which there are a lot), but a lot of people like the arrangement and the quirkiness of the hotels. Other alcohol is also available.
