EWU fires Coach Earlywine

Per the Spokesman, EWU A.D. Bill Chaves chose not to renew Coach Earlywine's contract. Thoughts or comments?

I found an interesting list online of EWU bball coaches records from Red Reese on as well as their winning percentages. Basketball wins have been hard to come by at EWU over the years. Here is the link:

Who will the new coach be? We need someone that Spokane can get excited about. New coach will need to get Rodney Stuckey invloved with the program. Any ideas out there?

Importany hire. Unlike Earlywine incoming coach will have some personel to work with. Bobby Knights son is looking for a job...

I think we should try to get Ryan Looney from Seattle Pacific. They beat us this year, he is from Spokane, and has a great reputation in Washington and Oregon. Hopefully he will be interested.

let's pop the bubbly!

as for a new coach....

just sayin'

I don't think anyone is surprised by this....he took over a bad program so it wasn't the ideal situation...but after 4 years, couldn't produce. One conference tourney appearance in 4 years and we were the lowest seed and lost, that is not getting it done. This team showed signs and I think it was said best earlier in the thread, the next coach will be taking over better talent that Earlywine did. I think if we had made a run in the conf. tourney it may have been a different or more difficult decision.

Hopefully we can make a good hire that can take the talent we have, bring in some new guys, and propel the program.

Absolutely NOT another stint for Giacoletti. That guy has done nothing but talk shit about Eastern since he left and pushed for Mike Burns as a replacement. A good coach? Yeah, but that doesn't make up for his lack of integrity.

I think we could use a bit of a "glamor hire" to show that we are serious about getting our b-ball program back on track... I'm not sure if that fits our financial means, though. The worst thing we could do is compromise our football success by overspending on a beleagured basketball team.

Jeff Hironaka (Assistant Washington State)
Travis DeCuire (Assistant California)
Ray Lopes (Assistant Idaho)

How about any of those three. Go Eagles!

Anybody know what Earlywine was making? If the wages paid to our football coach is any indication, a new coach will get paid slightly more than min wage. Since Washington's minimum is the highest in the country maybe it will not be more than minimum.
Seriously though it will have to be a coach who is an asst elsewhere and wants the title of HC on his resume and be willing to come to a VERY low budget program.

Ouch, not exactly a winning tradition

90K a year

We need to try to get Ryan Looney from SPU. I'm sure the salary would be fine for a guy from D2. His teams have been in 4 straight national tournaments.

The new hire needs to be someone local to the northwest. Earlywine wasn't, and perhaps that was part of the problem.

I thought perhaps they'd keep him around to see how this year's team could build some. I think he was a decent recruiter. This team has talent.

Hopefully we get a good hire - Steve Aggers proved you can win at Eastern.

As did Giac, even if LDopa hates him:)

When Earlywine was hired, he was trying to get players to stay and Burns was encouraging them to leave. Now there are no seniors on the team - are their scholarships renewed each year by the coach? Will the new coach have any latitude in bringing in recruits he wants?
Attendance was way off this year by both students and fans - was this a factor in Chaves' decision not to keep Earlywine? We do need a new coach who can get bodies back in the seats. I agree with LaDopoa that Giacoletti burned the bridge back to Eastern after Burns left when he said and did all he could to hurt Eastern's program.

Ya, i doubt he wants to come back anyway, I bet GU's assistants make more than our head coach.

AllWeatherFan,
I agree with what you have stated. The next Coach that comes in may have the same problems. Don't be surprise if some of the top players leave EWU for greener pastures. I spoke with 8 of the players, name I will keep to myself. Should the wrong Coach come in, they will be leaving. I hope this is angry players expressing themselves.

One Coach that was mentioned is Carl Howell, who is now AD/Coach at TCC (Tacoma Community College). He was Assistant Coach here under Mike Burns. He knows the system, and can recruit within the state. I'm at the point,I don't care who comes in, I just want our players to be happy, and play Basketball.

I don't know if Carl will apply. My mind, is now on Football. Can't wait for April 1st. Vic
