EWU fires Coach Earlywine

don't like to hear about players leaving. I think we finally have a good crew of players, I hope they will stick around and play together because they could really be a force next year in the conference. I am hoping EWU goes with someone local who can recruit in the area.

Let's get real, if the players were better, we wouldn't be dealing with a fired coach.

Some them really aren't good enough to play at this level. Only a couple are really difference-makers as D-I players. Even our best players have toughness issues.

I think we have enough of a nucleus to want to keep some talent around for next season, but I'm sure Chaves considered the players before making this decision. Beyond that nucleus, we're still going to need a pretty significant rebuild.

Familiar Names Surface in EWU's Search For New Basketball Coach

"Giacoletti coached the Eagles from 2000-2004 before leaving to be the head coach at Utah. The job in Salt Lake City never really panned out. He eventually landed a job as an assistant coach at Gonzaga under Mark Few.

Other potential names include former EWU assistant Carl Howell, who now coaches at Tacoma Community College; Jim Hayford, the successful coach at D-III Whitworth; Jeff Hironaka, an assistant at Washington State; and Ryan Looney, the head coach at Seattle Pacific."

When I think of junior college coaches I think of:

Steve Eck from Hutchinson CC
Jerry Burns from Monroe CC
Ross Hodge from Midland CC
Steve Gosar from College of Southern Idaho
Trace Bevell from Western Wyoming CC
Mike Bargen from Butler CC
Yancey Walker from West Plains CC

All have legit resumes and all have been to the NJCAA National Tournament. Is this position to be a homer pick and outsiders don't have a chance at it or do you all feel that others could get a fair crack?

I'd love to get the CSI coach, they always have an amazing team, but it would really be good to get someone from in state too. I would think they would pick someone from as far away from the current regime as possible, but you never know.

It would be interesting to hear the take from the AD. So many times Juco coaches now-adays are overlooked because of the perceived reputation of Junior College. I look at this spot as a great opportunity if and only if the AD lets an experienced guy come in and work his magic.

I have also heard that this job is a dead end job. Thoughts on that being the case?

for those people that didn't go to EWU....I can't imagine coaching at EWU is anyone's dream, however if you're successful, it could lead to a head coaching job somewhere else, and has before.

I'd like to see a coach with some NW ties that will bring in more NW kids. I do think our team coming back will be a lot better next year and whoever takes over won't be walking into a terrible situation. I would just like to see a coach that can bring in some Oregon, Washington, and Idaho kids. Local ties and local kids will also bring more support and fans to the program. I'm sure the decision made will be a good one and well thought out, as discussed throughout this thread, there are some nice coaches we can go after.
