EWU Football culture

Some EAA volunteers and board members will be working the parking lot at the Idaho State game, looking to sign up new members for the Eagle Athletic Association. The goal is to have 1000 members so if you haven't joined in 2010 please show your support for the Eagles by donating your hard earned dollars. Coach Baldwin and his staff, along with all the coaches at EWU in each sport, deserve your support. The leadership of Bill Chaves and the hard work of Troy Kirby, Marc Hughes and the rest of the staff are paying off. Join us back on campus Sunday morning at 7:00 am when we get together to watch the playoff pairings announced on ESPNU. See you Saturday morning, bring your friends and neighbors as it will be ideal football weather.

Good points all. Tomorrow's game is going to be one for the ages. A 9-2 record, outright BSC title, first round bye, home playoff games. It's all on the line. I'll be heading out tonight to stake a claim on our RV tailgate spots. If anyone wants to come by tomorrow for a beer, food, or to get out of the cold, swing by the 40' horse trailer with a fire outside. Go Eagles!

Here's a thought...We need something like the EAA, but specifically for the football team. I bet there are a lot of people out there that love EWU football, but will not give their money to the EAA, simply because they don't care about Women's Basketball. Not trying to offend anyone, but I'll be the first to admit that this is the only reason why I haven't joined the EAA...

It's called donor intent and if EWU football is where folks want to donate that is fine. However, the EAA works on behalf of all athletes at EWU and I couldn't imagine shortchanging any of the athletes by focusing on my favorites. The way we do it in our house is we belong to the EAA but we have also donated directly to the capital projects that further support the sports we enjoy. The Red Turf benefits all the athletes (and students) at EWU but the direct beneficiaries play football.

Any successful college program tries to have a balance and I think EWU does a great job with this under the leadership of Bill Chaves. No offense to those who don't belong to the Eagle Athletic Association, your program specific dollars are welcome. In my humble opinion you are not a true fan of Eastern Athletics unless you support the EAA with your dollars (and hopefully your time) as every student athlete at EWU deserves your support. Again, no offense as it comes down to donor intent. They are your dollars but know that Chaves, Don Ross and the rest of the athletic department will spend those dollars as wisely as possible. Don't forget your check book Saturday, donate to the EAA and support the scholarship athletes at Eastern Washington University.

I agree the 1000 people donating $1000 would be great. I would be in for that also. In our town
we have several foundations that do matches for the fundraisers. It makes it nice to tell someone
if you donate $1000 we have a matching $1000. Obviously, your not going to find a foundation to
match this kind of fundraiser. My question is could you find a group of alumni to step up? Could you find
10 alumni to do a $50,000 match? 20 to do $25,000? It seems to me that alot of ex eagle players
if asked might be willing to do $1000.

Great comments all around! I would love to see an effort for more corporate funding as well. I know we're in a tough economy but the sell has to be that making EWU games a weekend experience will benefit local businesses. Make a parallel example to what happens on game days in Mizzoula and what we can aspire to with a little better facilities. Right now the team does a heck of a lot of winning with a little bit of a budget (from what I hear the smallest in the Big Sky). Increase the facilities to reflect the quality of the team and watch what can be achieved ...

I'm proud to say i've been an EAA member for 4 years now, and as long as we still have a football team, i'll continue to give:)

So if someone cannot afford to purchase tickets to a sporting event AND give money to the EAA then they are not considered a true fan in the eyes of the EAA?

I also remember you saying "if you aren't a member of the Eagle Athetic Association you should just shut up". If you are going to continue to have your handle as "JoinTheEAA", then I would advise you to be a little more wary of what you say on this board, otherwise you may scare some people away. I for one am very close.

Now that I got that out, one can specifically donate to a program of their choice through the EAA?

Strip it all away, and the most important thing to take away re: the EAA is that this is the group that financially supports our athletic programs. Every die-hard fan or person who wants some "ownership" of the team greater than just being a fan, should throw down a few bucks.

The EAA makes givign very easy. Many people can't afford to make a $1000 one-time donation each year. Because of this, you can put together a plan of donating $100 every month for 10 months and it will be drawn automatically from your checking account at a designated time.

I'd really encourage everyone on this board to try and give heartily to this fine organziation. Even if you can just lay $10 in the jar, that's a start.

GO EAGLES!!!

If you've been keeping an eye on what's been going on over at MSU, then you may realize that they started a fundraising campaign this fall with the goal of raising 4 million dollars before the Cat/Griz game. They were successful and then some. Check out the link to their site (and I would note that their blog was very active in the process).

i always have and will believe people are more willing to give to specific projects that have short time frames. People don't want to dump money into a project that might take 5 years to materialize.
