When can we get our program to a point where we can a) compete, and/or b) beat a Pac-12 program?

If the guys on the team buy in and believe it can happen. We gave Eastern a real run last year, and the homer in me says we should've won that game. Maybe seeing a common, familiar opponent in EWU take down a Pac-12 foe, will give the Viks some confidence going into the game against Cal. Did you see how confident EWU was? I watched that whole game and from the first snap, Eastern looked and acted like it was their game to win. If the team shows up like are just happy to be there (similar to UW last season), it will be a long game.

What bothered me about yesterday (or maybe two days ago) in Ian Ruder's article on the game this week was motivation. Apparently both he and Nigel are of the opinion that the team should not be hungry about trying to defeat a Pac-12 team (or at least that's how it read to me). And my reaction was "Why not?" EWU was, and they won. Why not try to instill a bit of confidence in the team instead of being complacent about getting a check? What do we have to lose? We're already a nobody team in a conference dominated by a few select schools, so what more can we lose if we try to get a little optimism going into this game? I just don't get it.

He probably could have come out with some cliché like 'any given Saturday,' or 'both teams put their pants on the same way,' or something like that. Well, I guess '...playing to our fullest potential' is a bit cliché as well.
I sort of find the reality of Burton's comments almost refreshing. I seem to recall Glanville blowing quite a bit of sunshine up our butts only to have us get our asses handed to us quite often. I recall sitting down in front of the tv in 2008 thinking that we really had a shot to upset Washington State. We ended up getting absolutely killed by a really, really, really bad Washington State program.
All in all I just think the goals should be:
- Less penalties
- Less blown assignments
- No or limited injuries
- Experience for the starters against the most talented team we'll face all year
Win (very unlikely), lose (very likely), or draw (extremely unlikely), if we can hit those on Saturday, we'll be in a better position as we near Big Sky play.
