EWU/TOL Questions

Trying to gather some info on the EWU program from a fan/forum perspective to share with our readers and fanbase. For some reason, all of us tend to look at things in terms of “Our team won/lost”, but in reality, the other team is half of the equation too --- so with that in mind, we'd appreciate your take on the questions below:

1) What do Toledo fans need to know about EWU football?

2) Outside of Adams, who is the strongest contributor that EWU cannot do without?

3) What is one key to success for EWU and one for certain defeat?

4) Predict how the game plays out in two sentences or less - total domination by one team, a shootout, one team falling flat? If you want, take a stab at the final score.

Thanks in advance, and feel free to join us at LetsGoRockets.com to comment on anything you'd like. We welcome fans of all affiliations to discuss.

1) What do Toledo fans need to know about EWU football?

We play in the Big Sky Conference, our number one rival is Montana, we won a Div I Championship in 2010, went to the Div I semi-finals last year, and we have turf of a different color.

2) Outside of Adams, who is the strongest contributor that EWU cannot do without?

LB Ronnie Hamlin. He has the type of motor to take over games. He did it last year against Idaho and showed some of the same stuff during a couple of series two weeks ago in our win against Oregon State.

((Although I have to tip my hat to our o-line board members and mention All American guard Stephen Forgette who's been through the battles, is very smart, and one of the true leaders on our offense

3) What is one key to success for EWU and one for certain defeat?

Turnovers and Turnovers. Outside of that if our red zone D can force a couple of field goals I think we have a decent chance.

4) Predict how the game plays out in two sentences or less - total domination by one team, a shootout, one team falling flat? If you want, take a stab at the final score.

Shootout.

Best of luck!

1) the trait I associate most with EWU football over the last five years is the program's knack for winning from behind. Lots of come from behind victories in high profile/must win scenarios. No matter what the score or who the opponent is, this team believes they can win. Highlighted best by the 19-0 defective in the 2010 NC perhaps. But also in other big games for us.
2) I think we would be left sh*t up a creek without Ronnie Hamlin or TJ Lee III. Our style of D tends to be a bend don't break, and in order for that to work you need guys that can make plays and force turnovers. I think both these guys give us that.
3) key to success: probably 1st down defense, giving up yardage on first down hurts us a lot and playing well on down one gives us the opportunity to create turnovers on 2nd and 3rd down attempts. The one thing that would doom this team would be turnovers. I imagine we will need to score on a high percentage of drives to win and any turnovers could put us a possession or two behind in any shoot out scenario.
4) In my mind we lose a low scoring game or win a high scoring one.

1) What do Toledo fans need to know about EWU football?

Great program, has been a top FCS program the past 10 years or more. Have had a string of great QB's and WR's and the tradition seems to continue every year. EWU would compete well at the mid major FBS level conferences, just ask Wash St. Wash, Idaho, and Or. State....

2) Outside of Adams, who is the strongest contributor that EWU cannot do without?

O-line, outside of our 2011 season (injuries) our O line has always been great. I also think Hamlin on Defense and a few NFL caliber players in the secondary.

3) What is one key to success for EWU and one for certain defeat?

EWU needs to move the ball on offense for success and will do that. Defeat - in the few losses we have had the past few years it was due to teams running all over us. We always do well against pass heavy teams, but seem to struggle with a QB that can run the spread or read option.

4) Predict how the game plays out in two sentences or less - total domination by one team, a shootout, one team falling flat? If you want, take a stab at the final score.

Shootout, if EWU can whether the early storm of a FBS road game then it should be a great game.

1) What do Toledo fans need to know about EWU football?
We're not D-II. :D We have been one of the most successful FCS teams over the last decade. No matter how much we get behind, we will fight, scrap, and make plays to the final whistle.

2) Outside of Adams, who is the strongest contributor that EWU cannot do without?
HC Beau Baldwin. He's is calm under pressure, a brilliant offensive mind, and all class, and our players take on those qualities. With him coaching, we will always have a chance to win.

3) What is one key to success for EWU and one for certain defeat?
For both - turnovers. If we don't turn the ball over, we will move the ball and score plenty. If we do turn the ball over, we will more than likely lose, especially against a team that can pound the ball and chew up clock like Toledo can with Fluellen.

4) Predict how the game plays out in two sentences or less - total domination by one team, a shootout, one team falling flat? If you want, take a stab at the final score.
Long drives by UT, quicker drives by EWU, whoever has the ball last wins.

Questions for Toledo:

1) What do EWU fans need to know about Toledo Football?

2) Outside of Fluellen, who are the biggest contributors that the Rockets cannot do without?

3) What's Toledo's biggest weakness? What does Toledo do best?

4) On a scale of 1-10, 10 being strongest, how worried are Toledo fans about losing to EWU? :D

This article answers some of those questions (and confirms what I already knew, Ohio is one of those football savvy states like Texas, Florida etc, whose writers show a great deal more knowledge than did Oregon State's!).

Look for most of the fans to remain in the Glass Bowl well into the fourth quarter.

Hey Vic, what do they say a lot in the Carribbean..."respect".

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're point is (maybe you think that him saying fans will stay into the 4th qtr means the game will be close?), but our fans and students are NOTORIOUS for leaving games a half, no matter the score. I remember a few years ago the home opener was vs. #25 Fresno St. Even though we ended up losing in OT, probably only half the students stayed the whole game. 3/4 of UT students care more about Ohio St. (2.5 hrs away), Michigan (45 minutes), and Notre Dame (2.5 hrs) than they do UT. They would rather stay home and watch those teams on TV instead of going to a UT game for FREE. It's sickening how many students & fans wear OSU/UM/ND gear on campus and to games.

We have a little bit of the same problem with our fans/students with respect to UW/WSU, and Gonzaga, although that has improved vastly in recent years.
