EWU Turf

Let’s not forget they still have to fill it in with what I will assume to be black rubber pellets. Hopefully this will tone down the redness a bit. If not, God help us. We all may be buying new computer monitors after watching the EWU game on Big Sky TV. (Assuming we will be able to see again.) :|

I just showed it to my kids and they love it. Reactions included "Whoaaaa... that's hecka cool!" and "That's awesome!" :o I love them... but couldn't disagree more with them. :)

Thankfully, my 11yr old liked Sac's new turf better. Also showed them a bit of Stanford's stadium that they'll see in a few weeks.

Go Sac!!!!

Why does that have to be BLACK rubber pellets? Couldn't they special order (God forbid) RED pellets?

I'm happy with a field specially done in OUR team colors. Well, ONE of them, anyway! LOL.

The turf doesn't look that bad when its overcast or at night. But in straight daylight, yuck (we need the barf emoticon on this board).

Welcome to SacBuzz, SE.

Thanks for the pics. They did a good job with the field. I still wouldn't pick a red field for my Red and White Lodi Flames (of course that would be impossible given that we share a field with the blasted purple and gold Tokay Tigers). But you're definitely going to have something of a home field advantage.

1) Hard to see the football against the field.
2) Hard to see the players with red jersey's and helmet's.
3) Looks dreadful.

I wouldnt be surprised to see the NCAA make some rule changes after this season regarding turf like this, I'd be willing to bet that there are going to ba alot of complaints regarding the red against the jersey's and the football. I beleive it may give them an unfair advantage as they are practicing on the red field, whereas other teams are just going to go in there and have to adapt.

I really dislike the field.

It'll be interesting to see what it does for recruiting. Some recruits may think its cool, others may not want to spend half of their college career playing on a sea of red.

EWU’s new red turf a hit with players
By Steve Bergum (Spokesman-Review)
http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2010/aug/28/ewus-new-red-turf-hit-players/

“Boise wears blue uniforms on their blue turf,” Baldwin explained, “and it seems to work for them. We’re going to look at some different uniform options, ourselves, to see if one color gives us an advantage over another on our red surface.”

Baldwin said the offense and defense will alternate wearing red uniforms at practice in an effort to see if red-on-red makes it harder for defenders to pick out ball carriers, or harder for quarterbacks to find receivers or locate safeties on the other side of the ball.

“We’re going to change it up this week,” he said. “I told our guys I’m looking for their feedback. I want to know how it looks to their eyes and how they feel before we play our first game on it. If we can create any kind of additional home-field advantage by wearing a certain color uniform, we’re going to do it.

“Why wouldn’t we?”

The Eagles have used several different home uniform color combinations in recent years, ranging from red jerseys and black pants to all red and, in a couple of instances, all black.

Mitchell, who inherits the starting quarterback position left vacant by the graduation loss of four-year starter Matt Nichols, is looking forward to the uniform experiment.

“I think Boise wears all blue for a reason, and I think their home record speaks for itself,” he said. “So, I definitely think it’s a good idea to get the red jerseys out here and find out what they look like and whether there’s an advantage to wearing them.

“If not, let’s just go to all black and come out here and sweat.”

According to Baldwin, the Eagles could opt to wear the white jerseys they normally wear on the road.

“But I don’t see that happening,” he chuckled. “We haven’t made any final decision, yet, but there’s a good chance you’ll see us in all red. That would be my guess, if I had to guess.”
