EWU - UNC prediction thread

The Grizz beat UNC 55-28 @ Missoula, and were ahead 55-14 at the end of the 3rd qtr. Since EWU is better than the Griz, I'll take Eastern by 56-21.

:hijack: :hijack:

I think we finally hit a stride as we get a few bodies back, and absolutely curbstomp what has to be the worst team in division 1 football today. EWU 48 - UNC 10

27-17, good guys.

Eags come out focused. Mitchell throws for 300 yards, 3 TD's, and 0 picks. Talley runs for 100+. :thumb: Defense gets a couple sacks and forces 3 TO's to get us into the positive margin.

Eags start generating some mid-season momentum, and get a couple more guys healthy going into next week's game.

I agree the playoff talk is way premature at this point. Let's see where we are in a couple weeks. That said, one game at a time! We aren't done yet!

I think Chaves has done a very good job on the whole. But the scheduling is bad as often as it is not. I really haven't seen a "good" schedule in years, but it seems like every other year comes an atrocious schedule.

I know Chaves wants everything to go well. Hell, I've never doubted his or anyone in the ADs intentions. The problem is that good intentions aren't translating to good decisions in scheduling. Again, he seems like he manages the programs well and probably is quite good at balancing a budget...

We may have lost this season over one horrendous decision to travel to South Dakota for no money. We got banged up, lost all our momentum, got beat, and then went into Missoula with no confidence and lost another game we should've won. Had we played Minot State instead--- like Montana State did the week before they came to Cheney--- we're 4-2 right now in all likelihood.

I can live with it as-is, but the great concern is we will learn nothing from it internally. It's just like when we opened with Texas Tech and Colorado and were surprised when a good team with a lot of returning talent couldn't make the playoffs. Or when we opened with Oregon State and West Virginia and had our worst season in two decades. We get nowhere when we have schedules like that... And without intervention we're scheduled for the same thing next season.
So you think he is not as smart as you?

What a bunch of mamby pamby, fair weather, chicken little, quitters. It's gonna be 56 and sunny on Saturday!

Ya, 55 deg is much more like football weather than 75. Remember how well our guys started playing when the snow started flying in the ND game last year?
Go Eagles!!

I dont know of a head coach in America, that does not have input on the schedule his team is going to play. With that said Coach Baldwin is as much responsible for this schedule as is the AD. I always hear and read that the university wants to upgrade its facilities, well I would like to know how they plan on doing this if they dont go play up to FBS schools.

If anything I think you should blame the State of Washington for starting school so late in September, I have been told that the school does not want to play a home game when the students are not in session. Seems to make sense to me.

I would hope the money the university gets from playing FBS schools is put back into stadium and the football program in some fashion.

Last season the chatter online hear was why are we playing Central Washington a decent DII school that could possibly beat us in Seattle. You never will be able to satisfy all the fans and I truely hope the administration does not. There are many more parts to this scheduling that the average fan is not aware of.

It is so sad in America, when everyone else knows better than the people we either hire or vote in. Why arent more of these people in the decision making process when they have ALL the answers. Go Eagles!!!!

Had no intentions for this thread to head in this direction. I can mostly agree with everyone's points on here. I hated the schedule this year and next year as much as anyone, we all do, the s. dakota game was just stupid to schedule, said so from the beginning, if we had this schedule last year, we would not have been seeded in the playoffs and the outcome may have been different playing on the road, but there is nothing we can do about it now, play the cards we are dealt. I am sure there is a lot more that goes into the scheduling than what we all know, I know they tried to reschedule the cal poly game and tried other options that didn't work. Had we beaten S Dakota or either Montana school, we wouldn't be having these conversations anyways.

I don't think all the playoff talk is out of line for fans, as a team, yes, they need to take things one game at a time, but as fans, everyone can think what they want, and news to some of you, playoffs are still an option. There is only one game left on our schedule (at sac) that we won't be favored to win, and the sac st game will be a toss up as far as odds are concerned. The 3 FCS teams we did lose to are all ranked in the top 16, we don’t have a bad loss on our schedule. The team still has a TON to play for and they are absolutely looking at the positive and not dwelling on what has happened up until now. Out of all the Big Sky playoff contenders remaining, we have the easiest remaining schedule of any of them.

Bottom line is the team is beginning to turn things around. We had high expectations from the beginning due to all the returning starters and the defending national champs. They have beaten 2 pretty good teams the past 2 weeks and we have a home game against the worst team in the league this weekend, on top of that we will begin to get some injured players back. I understand the positive and negative sides of things, but what good is bitching about the schedule or team doing us midseason? We have 5 remaining regular season games this year, and the team needs all the support they can get. We can discuss the terrible scheduling (both football and b-ball) in the offseason. We have a game in 2 days and I for one, am looking forward to a whoopin being put on UNC.

Let's get back to reality... we've been playing BCS opponents for years and that $$$ has not gone into stadium improvements. The big two improvements we've had--- pressbox and turf--- we're funded by individual donations.

As for not playing when students are on campus, that's just borderline retarded. Eastern has always drawn comparatively well in September v. later in the year. If someone doesn't believe me, I'll pull stats on it. I've been around this program for quite a while and guarantee we always draw better in September than any other month... regardless of school being in session.

Coincidentally, UW starts at the same time as EWU... do they ever play at home in September?

Also, the thing about playing CWU that was bothersome wasn't that we were playing them, it was that we agreed to play a D-II school at a neutral site. Why schedule a tough D-II school and then give them the best possible chance to beat you by not playing them on your home field? These are the kind of decisions that make me just cringe, because our AD isn't giving us the best possible chance at success... which is the most importnat thing for the team.

As for this game... the original point of the thread before I went all Muhammad Atta on the mofo... if there was ever a gaem in which Eastern should be able to separate early and win by a good margin, it's this one.

Our strengths play right into their weaknesses, and they don't look like a team that can exploit our weaknesses.

UNC is #9 in total offense.. Not only is their offense bad, but they are 110 yards per game from #8 in total offense... in other words, they are a distant #9. Their rushing offense is #7 in the conference, only slightly ahead of Eastern (who is #8). They'll probably exceed their season average against us, as we are second to last in the conference in yards given up on the ground.

As for their own defense, it's not too pretty. They are the worst pass defense in the conference and will be playing against the second-best pass offense. In good weather--- and that is a caveat as crappy weather may neutralize a bit of what we like to do--- we should be much the best in terms of moving the ball.

i haven't posted in a while out of frustration and not wanting to write anything negative. seems we have a little mojo going into this UNC game and I think we take advantage of it.

How much money did we make off of sponsorships of the CWU game and the all the various functions surrounding it? What's the value of exposure to W. Washington high school players and alumni?

Hmm, looks like Idaho State threw for over 500 yards against UNC. Doesn't bode too well for UNC against a better QB and better receivers.

Good game. Biggest concerns were with the secondary giving up so many yards to a team that hardly runs the ball at all. I mean, UNC was more one-dimensional with the pass than we are, and that's saying a lot. We knew they were going to passing every down but still could not stop it. Would have liked to see a little more blitzing to shake their QB up, we made him look like a Payton candidate tonight.

Mitchell looks better every week. 28-39, 400 yards, 3 td's plus a rushing TD. :notworthy:

Forte, Herd, Edwards..... :notworthy:

Kick coverage was still poor. How can our punt coverage be so good and kick coverage so crap?

Even though the defense gave up a lot of yards through the air, it seemed they were flying around a little more, hitting a little harder....had more of the type of swagger from last season. Granted, it was against UNC. I think we had 3 or 4 sacks, which was nice to see.

Was also nice to see Mario get a TD and Bronson get a nice reception of the PA pass.

Vitto got his first playing time of the season, but looked a little rough to say the least. But in fairness, it's tough for a backup to come in cold like that not having played at all. If we are ever in a position to where we're up big again, he needs more experience. Our other options next year are two RS Freshman that haven't played a snap.

On to Sac State on the road. Going to take another huge effort like we had against WSU and NAU to beat them. Hopefully we'll have some more guys healthy next week. Was good to see Gibbs on the field and have Powers at least suit-up. Was not good to see Gehring and Gaylord out.
