EWU vs Sacramento State

Scary game... hard to believe we're playing Sac State and calling it a "scary game."

We've played a little tougher comp at this level, and maybe that'll help. Unofortunately, they are coming off a bye week and were really playing well before the break. They asbolutely crushed Northern Colorado whereas we went life-and-death with them.

I haven't seen enough of Sac State to tell for certain, but every other team we've played seems to struggle with our talent level. We win games with our talent, the question is generally our preparation, motivation, and execution. If we out-execute Sac state and play hard, we probably win. Keeping turnovers down and taking available yards instead of trying to get it all in one big play will be critical. These sound like big generalisms, and they are, but we need to play offensively like we did in our last two drives v. Northern Colorado.

We are a run heavy team and if EWU can stop that, they will shut down this offense. I don’t know the health of your defense but they will be in for a physical game. Also we have a mobile QB which will give you guys some fits (see UNC: Orms). Defensively if we can’t contain/stop/minimize TJ’s impact it’s over. He is a game changer and all I can do is hope the bye week was used to find some way to slow him down. No offense to BLM but from what I have seen he hasn’t been consistent enough to strike fear into my outlook of the game, however I will say that Kaufman is a stud and will no doubt draw the double team. Our passing defense has been suspect but we do have the BSC sack leader in Zack Nash.

There are just so many things to look for during this game that this has the setting of being a great one. If the Hornets can pull the “upset”, it will only disrupt the conference outlook even more. I did a preview over on Sac Buzz. EWURanger already stopped by and said hi and I’ve been lurking here already so some of you have probably seen me around. Here is to a great game. :)

Ditto. LIke I said over on your board, I think this will be the toughest test for EWU to date (that includes the Montana and NAU games). I do think we'll be prepared. Too much on the line in this one for us to come out flat like we did against UNC.......(boy was that a nightmare).

If EWU is going to win this one, I think it will hing on the defense. Our front 7 is pretty good - they have given up yards galore at times, but time and time again they have come up with some big plays, whether it's an INT or forced fumble (see Montana, Weber, NAU, UNC games). The one game that they have played poorly in was against MSU, and that was just an all-around horrible performance by the team in general. We sustained some injuries in the defensive line against UNC, but we do seem to have some depth there. You all probably know about JC Sherritt, our all-American lb - he has had a really solid year thus far. Other names to look out for are DT Renard Williams, DT Tyler Jolley, LB Zach Johnson, and Safety Matt Johnson, amongst others.

On the offensive side of the ball, we've been a little less productive than past EWU teams, but still capable. You already know about TJ, so I'll spare you.....right now he is not 100% from what I understand, but even if he can get a couple big plays it will help out. We also have to very capable backs in Beaumonte and (Super) Mario Brown, who had a really nice run in the UNC game. At QB, BLM has been a little hit and miss, but when he's on he's on and can be very dangerous when he plays within himself. You know about Brandon Kauffman, the guy's a beast, enough said. Other than him, though we have some other very capable/quick receivers in Edwards, Hart, Gant, and Herd. Our offensive line has been solid and we haven't had any major injuries there, so that is a plus.

This is probably anyone's game, but I think whoever makes the fewest mistakes wins. I don't think it'll be a blow-out for either team. And I agree with your assessment that EWU will need figure out a way to stop your excellent RB, and you'll need to slow down TJ.

Good luck and like I said over on your board, let's hope for a good, clean, game with no injuries and no BSC referee shananagans!

Correct me if I'm wrong but some have said we need to play like we did the last two drives vs UNC. It looked like they were in a prevent "D" and thus the shorter routes were there for the taking and then we hit them w/ some Jones. Those type routes won't be there and we need to take what they give us. BLM can throw up some of those jump balls long, we have the wr's to make a play out of those...if we give up an int on a long throw every once in a while so be it. I think every team has a special play-maker this year and if they execute their game plan they can win. I don't think we have superior talent over anyone in this league to calmly say if we play our game we'll win. Our opponents can easily say the same thing. It's the intangibles that win close games and it looks as if we are getting the better end of the deal in some of our close games(which seem like most of our games). Here's to more intangible wins!

In my opinion, this defense has been the best we've had. There aren't a ton of sacks, but run and pass coverage has been very good. I think in this game we'll finally see our offense and special teams step up to match the defense's performance in what I hope will be a convincing win. If Jones can be productive, Mitchell accurate, and special teams stingy, I don't see another team stopping us. If we spot the Hornets points like we did against Montana however, I think we'll lose.

To win this one, we're gunna need a little bit of this....

Keys to the game:
1. Special team has got to be outstanding
2. We must win the turnover battle

Go Eagles!!!

I don't have a very good feeling about this game, owing mostly to the fact we played so badly last week. However, we totally laid down in Bozeman earlier in the year and came out with a good performance the next week, so who knows?

I don't have a massive warm and fuzzy about it, either. Sac State is a very dangerous team. They could have beaten both UM and MSU if a couple of plays had gone their way. I think the fact that we struggled so much last week means that we are really going to come out and try to make a statement. Plus, the fact that's it homecoming I think will help. Gunna be a close one, I think.

First off EWURANGER...those are GREAT Pics! I am more anxious about this game than anything, looking forward to a dominating performance from our offense both through the air and on the ground. Should be a blast and hopefully the fan turnout will continue to be decent, especially that it is homecoming.

Sac State is good, but Eastern is primed to have a great game and I see us winning by 14-17 points.

See Everyone at the turf tomorrow!

I think our offense needs to blow up tomorrow. I can easily see this one turning into a scoring slug fest and the last team to score will win. That being said, our defense has been stellar. I hope there is a good showing and that the Hornets get caught up in the new turf and all the hoopla. Our first playoff game is tomorrow!

My prediction: EWU 45 SAC 42. :?

I hope we stomp them. We need a statement game. I want our offense to just click, minimized miscues and overthrows, and no turnovers. Fast and sure on defense, minimized missed tackles, stingy in the redzone and solid special teams. I don't think that's all gonna happen, but I think we will put together solid performance with the boost from the fans and the turf. I could see 35-17, but more likely 35-24.

Darn, I was hoping we'd miss the rain for this game. Is it really going to be that bad? Won't be good for attendance numbers.

EWU fans need to be tougher. Rain? Big whoop, bring a jacket.

Yeah, exactly. My brother's there right now and said it's pretty wet but not too bad. Still, Spokane area people are big time fair weather fans.

Big Sky TV video feed is up. Yep, looks pretty wet. Hopefully the worst has passed, though.
