EWU vs. UW Game Thread

Mitchell said that his two years at SMU taught him that FBS teams tend not to take FCS teams quite as seriously as other opponents.

"They are picking this game for a reason,'' he said of UW scheduling Eastern. "They want to come in and get an easy win to start the season out, and I know how that is coming from SMU and playing two (FCS) teams --- you just prepare differently. And we are going to take full advantage of that and just try to come out and smack them in the mouth.''

I'll have more on Mitchell and Eastern later in the week.

It says he also said.."One thing everybody always says is that when you play up that it's a win-win situation for you because if you lose you are expected to lose and if you win, hell, you just beat a D-I team. But we are trying not to look at it like that. We are trying to look at it that we are expecting ourselves to win this game. We have watched a lot of film on them, we are prepared for them, we know what they are going to give to us, so it's kind of just going out there and being successful, and we know we are good at that. Just have to go out there and play your own game and just do it.''

*Wish he would have said beat a FBS team instead of beat a D-I team(maybe he did) as we are D-I.

Twins from Tumwater leave foes seeing double on defense

They occupy two spots on the football field, but Eastern Washington’s Matt and Zach Johnson move to one loud, crashing beat.
If you happen to watch them play – or God help you if you have had your bones rattled by one of their hits – and think you are seeing double, well, you are, because they are twins.
They look like each other, even though Zach is a linebacker – moving to the middle spot this season – and Matt is a strong safety.
They have the same cat-like movements, and pain-seeking intentions to stop ballcarriers in their tracks. Such will be the case Saturday when the defending FBS-champion Eagles open their 2011 season at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Where one goes, the other almost always follows.
“Twins, like everyone says, are each other’s best friends,” Matt said. “And we get along better than a lot of twins. Sometimes we don’t even need to talk … to know what we are thinking.”
The Johnsons have progressed in a similar fashion: Neither received much recruiting attention coming out of Tumwater High School, but Eastern was willing to take both as a package deal in 2007.
They redshirted that first season and have started every game they have played since – Matt 38 games, and Zach 25.
Both were all-Big Sky Conference selections last season, when Eastern won its final 11 games, including a 20-19 victory over Delaware, to capture the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision championship in Frisco, Texas. Both are listed as preseason All-America candidates this year. Both were voted this week by teammates as defensive co-captains.

Washington fans have long touted the school’s avoidance of facing those lower-tier Division I opponents from the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision. The tradition ends Saturday afternoon, when Eastern Washington shows up in Husky Stadium.
Because I prefer watching fights between foes of corresponding ability and size, the idea of allowing big fellas to polish their knockout punches on little fellas never has appealed to me. But the Eagles aren’t so little: They’re the defending FCS national champions and the preseason choice of pollsters to repeat.
As fights go, the Huskies’ 2011 opener is something like an up-and-coming heavyweight versus a top-ranked light-heavyweight. I can live with that. More important, so can Eagles coach Beau Baldwin, a Tacoma native who grew up following the powerhouse teams put together by Don James.
“I’m as excited as I’ve ever been for a nonconference game,” Baldwin told reporters the other day.

For the first time since the NCAA split Division I football into two divisions in 1978, the Washington Huskies will welcome a team from a lower division into Husky Stadium.
For years, the Huskies took pride in not playing teams from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) – or I-AA, as it used to be known.
But that will change Saturday when the Eastern Washington Eagles come to Montlake for the season opener.
With teams now playing 12 games a season and the increased number of conference games, the move to play a non-FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) team was going to happen eventually, even for Washington.
“I don’t think it’s disappointing,” coach Steve Sarkisian said. “I think that’s college football. It’s Pac-12 football really for us, you are talking a nine-game conference schedule. We are the only conference in the country that does that, and it’s a good schedule, a hard one, a tough one.”“I don’t think it’s disappointing,” coach Steve Sarkisian said. “I think that’s college football. It’s Pac-12 football really for us, you are talking a nine-game conference schedule. We are the only conference in the country that does that, and it’s a good schedule, a hard one, a tough one.” Since the Huskies are already playing Nebraska on the road this season, that leaves two non-conference games. Washington scheduled Eastern and Hawaii.
Traditionally, FCS schools have been willing play on the road for large guarantees. EWU will get $450,000 from UW for Saturday’s game.

Yeah, I understand going for the win...but was still plenty of time left. I dunno, just my thought...get at least one more play off before going for the TD.

Major props to EWU. I could see going into the game that EWU would be a tough opponent for UW. And sure enough, they could have won that game a different break or two. I'd wish you good luck going forward, but it doesn't seem that EWU will need to rely too much on luck this year to be successful. Anyway, since I was on here before the game, thought I should offer props after the game.

Great game on Saturday. Tough loss but I cannot wait for the rest of the season. Also thanks to the husky fans, and to Pat who was very generous with his beer and food spread. Cant wait for the showdown with the bobcats and griz.

Here are some photos from the game I took:
