EWU vs. WAGNER ~ 2nd Round FCS

Now that it is official thought we might want to start it up!!
Personally not too scared about this game, but need to put the hammer down quickly give them no hope.

Like I said in the other thread never been a big fan of teams I like who end up playing other teams who are playing after some type of tragedy/ordeal that they have had to deal with (the Hurricane in this instance).

Wagner started the year 0-3 and then ran off 9 wins in a row. Any team in a playoff situation, especially a "hot team" has the ability to punch you in the mouth. Prepare hard. Focus on this game. And we should move on.

This was the first time I've ever seen Wagner play. They have a lot of heart. They don't have a lot of size on the DL and almost tempt you to run. However, they seem pretty fast, especially at LB.

We've got to stop their running game. It's pretty solid, right up there with anyone in the Big Sky. This is not a walkover game by any means. They'll show up to play and it looks like they play hard, for 60 minutes.

That said, I think we stack up well being every bit as fast and quite a bit bigger. If we bring our A game, we should do just fine.

Not to sounds too presumptious, but we should absolutely roll this team. They are good, but consider that this was a Patriot League/NEC match-up. I'm not sure an NEC team has ever won a playiff game. That said, with the was we've played in a few games this year we can't afford to look past anyone.

I think our offense will force them out of that run game, and when it does watch out. I doubt they've seen a passing game like ours this season. They don't go up against the same quality Qb's and WR's that we have week in and week out.

My prediction is something like EWU 48, Wagner 17. :thumb:

I can't seem to find a Fan Site for Wagner College. Anybody else have any luck. I was just curious how the fans feel about coming out to the Inferno. they only had 3,200 or so at their game against Colgate so I'm not even sure if the fans have a site. I'll keep looking.

Their stadium only holds that much, but yeah, my guess is they don't have much of a fan base. I'm pretty sure they don't have a fan forum, however they have a few fans that post on AGS.

We need to come out playing strong and not allow them to build momentum. Wagner is a team that plays hard, and we do not want to give them any momentum or we will be in a dogfight. We need to control the game early and not let up.

A couple of observations of Wagner from the Wagner/Colgate game. Although, it was kind of hard to evaluate Wagner because Colgate was pretty weak.

Wagner’s offense is the zone-read option from shotgun. I don’t recall seeing the quarterback under center once. The quarterback ran 18 times for 91 yards. He is a tough dude but Colgate did not hit him hard once. Our linebackers will punish him. Their primary running back is good, has moves and is big enough to create problems. Their O Line seemed average. Big fullback that blocks well, blew out the defensive ends often. They have some size (not sure about speed) at WR. They did not need to throw to beat Colgate (only 95 yards passing) so it’s hard to evaluate the receivers or how well their QB throws. I remember the commentators saying he did not have an interception in 210 attempts so he probably makes good decisions. We need to punish the quarterback when he runs, stop the run and force him to throw the ball.

On defense their inside and outside LBs are athletic and are the strength of their D. They were in a 3-4 most of the time, but snuck the outside LB up on the line many times. They did not seem to have much of a speed rush, even when Colgate was in obvious passing situations. Their Dline seemed average, maybe not as athletic as Big Sky teams. Hard to tell how good the DBs were from a pass defense standpoint. But the corners played soft and were almost always 7 yards deep, with no press coverage. Their defense seems strong but Colgate did not put much pressure on them.

I have a feeling they have not played teams with our team speed or talent at the skill positions. I think if we control them early and keep the intensity high, we will get a win.

Nice write-up, and welcome GoldenEagle!

Their best CB is #3 Torian Phillips... he had two picks against Colgate. He's a Sr. transfer from Syracuse, but small at 5'9... have fun against 6'5 Kauf, 6'3 Edwards and 6'3 Herd.

I think we have seen flashes of the potential of this team. I know we can beat any team in the country, but we need to start putting it together. I really think that the story of these playoffs will be told by how we play and not our opponents.

I feel the same way about our receivers this year as I did about TJ in 2010, they are just better then anyone in the FCS. If we get them the ball and play solid D, we will be in Frisco again. If we fart around trying to make our redshirt QB or the running game the focus we can be beaten. If we play to our strength we will be champions again.

So my question is do you start Adams or do you start Padron?

My guess is they will stick with Adams (my choice) but I would not be at all shocked to see Padron behind center after two more weeks of competition. Either way feed the cievers!! :silly:

Also any word on Talley??? :?

I would start Padron and keep Adams in our back pocket if we need his feet. In the Davis game Baldwin went back to Adams because the pass rush was getting to Padron. That is a tremendous luxury to have, but I 100% believe that we will put up more points with Padron in most situations.

This. The strength of our offense is our receivers, and Padron is a lot more effective in the passing game. No he's not as mobile but I think in the PSU game we saw Padron coming into his own in this offense. That said, Adams is a hell of a playmaker and I'm excited about all the experience he got this season and his prospects for the future, but I am really wondering if Padron is the guy to make a playoff run with.

In my Opinion Only, Adams helped win you the BSC, but Padron will win the National Championship, but I still like both QB's. That's why Beau gets the little bucks, LOL!!

Exactly this.

One thing I also feel comfortable knowing, is that when our backs are against the wall, we shine. There's no room for error in the playoffs; win or go home. Baldwin and the players pull out all the stops and play a little more aggressively. I've got a good feeling about the next 5 weeks.

+2

I think the bye week will really, really help us. We should have all of our defensive bullets back, and as healthy as we've been since...well Idaho.

Been looking over season stats on both EWU and Wagner for the year, one that stood out was Wagner avg.'s 22 points /game vs Eastern's 32 points in a much tougher conference. They have only turned the ball over ONCE in the 9 game winning streak coming into the Inferno. We need to do the same thing to them as we did to Cal Poly. We beat Cal Poly in the rushing game, so we need to beat Wagner in the turnover battle and turn the tables on their strength, then the rest should take care of itself. Nobody should take this team lightly, they are a gring it out running team who will still pass 20 times per game, but their RB's and QB are there strength along with an above average defense. That said, 38-17 eastern.

Here's the deal: I started on the 2004 team that earned a playoff berth as the 16 seed (when it was limited to 16 teams). This got us a draw against the #1 seed (and undefeated), Southern Illinois. We went in there and punched them in the mouth, won a close game and knocked them out in the first round.

Fast forward to 2007, when we did the same thing to the #2 seed (also undefeated), McNeese State. That time, we had a little more respect on a national level, but not by much. We curbstomped them in the rain in front of all of their fans. It was complete domination.

My point is this- Unknown teams manage to pull upsets in the playoffs all the time. Luckily, Coach B was the OC back in '04, and I know he won't allow this team to take anything lightly. I don't care who we're playing. In the playoffs, everybody better get your best shot, otherwise you'll end up sitting on the couch the following week. Can't wait for Saturday! GO EAGS!
