EWU vs. WAGNER ~ 2nd Round FCS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS2-Mvfe3t4&feature=player_embedded" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is the highlights from the Wagner/Colgate game. Colgate had averaged 40 points a game and Wagner forced a lot of turnovers. Looks like a good Wagner D but they havent faced an offense like us either!

Here's the deal: I started on the 2004 team that earned a playoff berth as the 16 seed (when it was limited to 16 teams). This got us a draw against the #1 seed (and undefeated), Southern Illinois. We went in there and punched them in the mouth, won a close game and knocked them out in the first round.

Fast forward to 2007, when we did the same thing to the #2 seed (also undefeated), McNeese State. That time, we had a little more respect on a national level, but not by much. We curb stomped them in the rain in front of all of their fans. It was complete domination.

My point is this- Unknown teams manage to pull upsets in the playoffs all the time. Luckily, Coach B was the OC back in '04, and I know he won't allow this team to take anything lightly. I don't care who we're playing. In the playoffs, everybody better get your best shot, otherwise you'll end up sitting on the couch the following week. Can't wait for Saturday! GO EAGS!

2004-I was at that game as a fan and the Saluki fans were very impressed with the team coming over to sing the Eagle fight song after the game. They could not get outside because of our speed and basically shut them down
2007- I was at that game too and their fans were pretty depressed at half because as I recall we had a shutout going and they were expecting to walk all over us. Isn't that the year we lost a playoff game at home after being up comfortably at half?
I agree with your point, DO NOT take any playoff team lightly.

Close; 2004 was the home game against Sam Houston where we gave up the big lead in the 2nd half. 2007 was the game @ App where we barely lost. The good news from my perspective is that both of those teams are in our bracket for a potential dose of sweet, sweet revenge.

If I'm not mistaken, Colgate has the same scholly limitations as Wagner, and they went to the National Championship in the last decade. The got bounced by 40 when they got there, but they knocked off some pretty good teams along the way... probably all of whom thought they'd roll some partially funded school from New York.

While watching the videos for the xxx time what struck me again... is that dominate, hard hitting, smash mouth, shut down defenses create champions. Frankly I do not see our defense this season as any of that. We are more of a hang on, bend but not break (hopefully), hold your breath defense. I do not see the toughness of a Tyler Jolly, JC Sherritt, dominance of Renard (when he wanted to be) that we had in 2010. Granted we do have some damn good players that were on that team as well but not with the fear factor we had in 2010.
Hope I am wrong but I'm concerned how far we can take this home field advantage.
Go Eagles

Clawman thats why they play the game ! If we play like we have the past 2 games we will be watching from the outside in ! GOEAGS ! This team is dangerous and have nothing to lose !

I'm calling the score 28-14. Score based on if we went up against a slightly smaller Cal Poly team that was way more fired up.

There were times in 2010 where our D looked a bit soft as well. "Bend, don't break" was sort of the motto then, as it seems to be now. The big difference was that D was MUCH better at forcing turnovers. I also don't remember games where we really struggled to make tackles at the first point of contact like we have at times this year. Hopefully, with the intent focus and determined intensity that comes in the playoffs, we rise up on D and not have a game like we did at PSU when we let guys break 2,3, even 4 tackles on some plays.

After two weeks, playing at home, and starting our playoff drive--- I hope we surpass their level of intensity (and I know they are a team with a huge heart). If we come out and make plays like we did against Cal Poly and Idaho, I suspect we'll win easily and by a wide margin. If we sluff around like we did against UC Davis and Southern Utah, just hoping to win it at the end by making a big play or two... then this could be a 50/50 game.

I really think, ultimately, we'll win by enough points that we can play the fourth quarter with our 2 and 3-deep guys.

I was just implying, more fired up than Cal Poly was. Also, we had J.C. Sherritt on our team that year. If only we had an all star linebacker like that again.

Remember the SEMO game two years ago? They had this all-world back that was supposed to run over our D. Once we held him in check, they had nothing left. They were shut out in the second half and had 6 pass completions the entire game. The rest is history. Wagner's not as one-dimensional offensively, but they still average 100 fewer yards per game in a conference I think we all agree is not as tough as the Big Sky. They crawl their way down field, chew up the clock, and hold onto the ball. Their 25 year old QB is tough, accurate, and careful. They know what they've got, and they know what we can do with our offense on the field. I expect them to use every trick in the book Saturday to keep themselves in the game. We must pound their defense with our run game early, hold onto the football, and be prepared for anything. This cannot turn into a Boise State-Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl.

This is the type of game where if we get in trouble all we have to do is say, Kauf, Herd, Edwards, go deep...they won't be able to stop it...

According to the Patchin show, there were only 1,000 tickets remaining. It would be very cool if it's a sell-out. Bribe 'em with food, beer, shelter, etc. Get on the horn people!

You sound like me. 8-)

Obviously no way to document this but I think we will have more former Eastern football players at this game than any game in our long history. If you want to read an update on Harry Leons our QB in 1997 see below. He talks about the pride past players have for the progress we've made these past few years. See you Saturday, if you don't have a ticket better buy one today. Raining today but weather should improve tomorrow so that should help the walk up crowd. I think this game will sell out if we have decent weather.
