OK, time to look forward to this week's game at Eastern Washington, otherwise known as the Dam Cup. All indicators are that we are in the playoffs, but after what happened clear back in 2006, I really don't want the committee to have any doubt about us. EWU will be ready after the pasting that Montana put on them, and they need this win (and help) to have any chance at the playoffs. Kupp is the real deal and so our corners and safeties will be really tested this game. If nothing else, this will be a great way to prepare for the playoffs, playing in a hostile environment that the Inferno has become.

So what is the game plan.....? Do you defend Kupp the best you can, knowing he is going to get yards and just try to outscore them?

Play him like montana. The trick is not to think you can man up on him.. you cant and dont play zone. He will eat you. Montana blitzed... a ton. The o line could not buy enough time. We played single man on kupp woth a lb or cb and had a saftey zone his side of the field almost every play. He had 6 catches...but nothing too easy. His biggest play he made an amazing jump ball catch and bounced off the saftey and took it 40 yards. Psu has a good fs and ss. Utilize them

Redshirt freshman Reilly Hennessey will start at quarterback for Eastern Washington when the Eagles face Portland State on Saturday in the final regular-season game of the season, coach Beau Baldwin said Tuesday.

Hennessey started in the Eagles’ 57-16 loss Saturday at Montana, but alternated with former starter Jordan West while third-stringer Gage Gubrud also saw action.

That won’t be the case this week, said Baldwin, who added that West or Gubrud could see action “in certain packages.”

“Reilly will be the starter and we’ll take it from there,” Baldwin said before the Eagles practiced in their fieldhouse during Tuesday’s windstorm.

The stakes are high: 18th-ranked Eastern (6-4 overall and 5-2 in the Big Sky Conference) must defeat the 8-2 Vikings in order to have any chance to qualify for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Baldwin said the quarterback change isn’t based on Saturday’s game or the Eagles’ 52-30 loss to Northern Arizona, but rather “the culmination of 10 games.”

“Jordan was a huge part of why we were able to win six games, but he had hit a point where he wasn’t playing as well in the last few weeks as Reilly,” Baldwin said.

West, a redshirt junior, led the nation in passing efficiency through September, but his stats fell dramatically in recent weeks. Against Montana, he completed 7 of 19 passes for 119 yards and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Along with the Eagles’ inability to break big plays in the running game – their longest run from scrimmage in Big Sky play is 21 yards – West’s slump has hurt the Eagles’ ability to convert on third down.

In their last three games, the Eagles are 12-for-40 (30 percent) on third down.

Blaming that on overall team execution, Baldwin said practices “have lacked crispness, and that has carried over into Saturdays.”

Another factor, Baldwin said, is that Hennessey has outperformed West during practices. He likened the situation to 2012, when then-freshman Vernon Adams Jr. supplanted starter Kyle Padron for the same reason.

“It’s because that what gives Eastern Washington the best chance to win,” Baldwin said.

I when I got around to watching the game on ROOT, I noticed that blitzing too. I think that is a good plan early, put pressure on the QB ( Hennessey) early, and hope that that adds a little difficulty to his execution. Their other receivers have the ability to make some plays too.....PSU just needs to not panic, avoid giving up big unearned yards via penalties by the defensive backs and put the pressure on from start to finish.

Have Coleman on Kupp with Onwasaur shading over there. No doubt Hennessey will be looking for Kupp on every pass play so best to see if someone else can beat you. Also, blitz the freshman as well.

Weather for Cheney on Saturday calls for high of 33 and sunny. A nice day for football- and heaters on the sidelines.

And no wind. My younger days in Montana, we would take that for mid-November. Great football weather! :D

I was late getting to the live streaming (which by the way once again made my blood boil with all the "technical difficulties" encountered), but I don't think I saw Paris in the lineup. Could someone share the circumstances?
