EWU's 16 Football Commits

I will do my best to get this forum going in the direction it should be. I now have a vested interest with the 2010 signing class. I'm used to alot of chatter and smack talk from previos highschool forums I've been associated with, and would love to get this eagle forum like the grizzly and bobcat forums. Looks like we just need some energy. EWU is one of the premier football programs in the nation at the FCS (D-1AA) level. Ranked 12th in the nation in 2009 and in eagle the playoffs 4 of the last 6 years. Getting the Nations only RED TURF field, Cmon, this is really cool! As far as the 14 Highschool athletes they signed (11 from the state of Washington) and the 2 transfer QB's, this team should be really good next year. As someone very close to WA highschool football, EWU got some amazing athletes in the 2010 class. Most of them had D-1 offers and multiple D-1AA offers, but chose EWU for the coaching staff, winning tradition and the University. They want to play close to home, win and bring home a national championship. EWU got a far better recruiting class than the Grizz, Bobcats and without a doubt, PSU. The only reason I can say this is I've been living recruiting for the last 3 years. I now hope to see more fans getting excited about Eagle football this year and years to come. Sincerely, New EWU Fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to EWU and to this forum! We are few in number but have some really good faithful posters which are scattered throughout on several boards. Up until about a month ago, most EWU posters were on the easternwashingtonrivals.com web site but several of us have been trying to get those posters over here to this site. Many posters are also on the FCS (championshipsubdivision.com) or anygivensaturday.com national FCS boards as well. Great to see some enthusiasm on this board. Go Eagles!!!

Sounds as if recruiting had a top notch class...of course time will tell how it sorts out. Like to see if a pounding running back emerges and QB steps up to take over.

Welcome!! I would like to know out of all of the recruits who the coaches and fans are most hyped on? Out of the high school kids.

Welcome Talon! Good to see that type of enthusiasm. I've also been trying to get this board more active, but it's slow going. I'll second the mention of CS.com (championshipsubdivision.com), as that's where most of the EWU posters (myself included) regularly post.

Could you elaborate on your connection to recruiting, and this recruiting class in particular?

My connection to recruiting is simple. I've attended most of the big combines in the Northwest the last few years, and scattered ones in Calf. and the East coast. Also, over 20 college football camps in the spring and summers to see the competition at various positions. After numerous repititons, you begin to understand where alot of the kids stand athletically. Coaches love speed and athleticism! Strength is important, but not as important as heart, desire and coachability. Film watching and attending games are very important to see a full game summary. I could go on and on but recruiting is not a science. Also, colege coaches aren't allowed to attend these combines unless it's their own camp. So, unless a coach recruiting an athlete has attended a highschool game or watched video, they've only heard of them and maybe never seen them play. NCAA rules restrict college coaches, but not a parent of a prospective athlete. I hope you get the picture now.
As far as EWU committs, coach Baldwin's comments on all of them were great on the main football homepage. IN MY OPINION, I think the EWU staff was REALLY happy with highschool commits of Zylstra, Topps, Goldwire, Butorac, Day and Pinson. But in the end, they wouldn't offer a player who they wouldn't want.

A few examples:
THE GRIZZ: Signed two 6'8 "O" Lineman, one from WA and the other from AZ. Both guys are closer to 6'6, verified from a college coach (the AZ lineman), and the WA kid (I saw) in person at camp and game. Neither are athletic, nor bend very well. Kistler (WA lineman), actually was a 2009 grad who sat out most of his senior season (2008) with an ankle injury and then signed with no one after he graduated and sat out this last season, which means he hasn't played football for almost 2 years. Also, his head Coach at ODEA (Seattle) was a Grizz alum, wonder how he got the offer? All D-1 schools passed on both of these big guys which first year coach Plfugrad took. The scouting report and film on these 2 guys was maginal, even though their big. The Grizz are trying to keep their tradition of huge tall "O" Lineman, but may have busted on these two guys.

So you're just an avid HS FB fan/parent, or do you work in some capacity relating to the combines or HS programs? Not trying to be dubious, just curious. Either way, your insight is much appreciated and I'm glad you're a fan of EWU. Again, I'd encourage you to check out/register at http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=4. There's a good group of EWU posters and a boatload of enthusiastic FCS football fans not only from around the Big Sky, but around the country. :ugeek:

Screaming eagle
I did check out the other website you referred me to, and it was very good, but impersonal from what I'm used to. I guess I've been spoiled, What I'm trying to get at is a personal EWU football forum where we can all bitch, complain and rejoice. I'm on-board for the new forum for EWU. I think if I keep posting both positives and NEGATIVES, people will come over just to see if anything is new. Remember, everyone loves all the feel good stuff, but they'll respond to the negatives. The one negative on this recruiting class is they were shooting for 4 "O" Lineman and only got 2. I still really like the class they signed. Do you have any feedback?
As to your last question about recruiting, I think that's been answered, but I do know the 2010 recruits.

talon, there seems to be a movement to this site for EWU athletics. There is also another site that is used http://easternwashington.rivals.com/forum.asp

Fair enough.

As for this year's class, I'm definitely happy with it and see a lot of potential. Wulff did a good job building a winning program, and it looks like Baldwin took the bar and set it higher. I like where he's going in terms of recruiting kids that extremely athletic and fast. I like that we went after O-line and DBs in this class... where we need the most help. Also looking forward to seeing this "Super Mario" kid play in person... looks like he has great speed and downfield vision like (Taiwan) Jones, just built into a smaller package which makes him shiftier. It's unfortunate we lost the Colorado OL to Colorado State at the last minute after he verballed to EWU.

I'm not sure any of these kids will impact the program next year nor will we need them to. I'm more excited to see what they'll do the four years following...

Also, how awesome would it be to have a site like eGriz? Talk about keeping the fans involved. eEagle... Doesn't really work, does it? We'll need something else.

Welcome, and ditto! Spread the word!

EWURanger welcome, the rivals site is soooooo behind, lets make this the killer site for EWU football and more ! GO EAGS

EWU Ranger-- I feel your frustration with having to register and get new passwords for different Big Sky Forums etc., but It seems unless it's a pay site like scout.com or many others, they either want you to register for free or pay 9.95/ month for each Division 1 school you want to post. That's how the USC recruits get so many star ratings, they have the most subscribers. If a certain USC commit is a 1 star and then verbals to to big time D-1 school, like USC, or whoever, his stock rises to a 3 star. That's the way the recruiting game works. Then, there are guys who get offered by one or two D-1 schools and become 3 star recruits, but once they commit to a D-1AA school, they automatically are reduced to a 2 star. Seen this happen a hundred times. This is why scout.com has a vested interest in paying subcribers. I know I got a little off track on your question, but this was the bigger picture answer.

Getting back to the EWU 2010 football commits: No one has mentioned the two QB transfers coming in this season. I know Coach Baldwin is excited about Bo Levi Mitchell (SMU), out of Texas powerhouse Katy, a highschool juggernaut, went 29-1 in his HS career. Apparently lost his job this last year due to injury, missed 6 games, and a true freshman back-up QB took them to a bowl game, so out goes Bo Levi to EWU where he was once recruited and excited to be here. At 6'2/210 and 4600 yards passing in 1 and a half seasons and 36 TD's (although 33 INT's), his experince in D-1 will defeinately be a plus for Eastern. With Taiwan Jones, I'm hoping for a very balanced offensive game. Would love some insight on the Off. Line from the faithful. This years team could be really good if not conference champs. Also, as far as "super mario", I'm hoping a redshirt if Jones stays healthy, but he's very fast with great lateral movement. Lastly, the JC QB transfer from CALF. Greg Panelli, I honestly don't know much about other than what was posted on commitnent day. Over 5000 yards passing and 56 TD's in 2 years, at the JC level. Would love some more feebback etc., so let's keep it rolling.

So I was looking a little bit more into this year's recruiting class and found a few decent videos on the web. I'll start off with the skill positions (RB's and receivers) and then maybe look around for some stuff on the others and do some further posts.

Markeem Adams WR 6-0 175 Seattle, Wash. (West Seattle HS '10): This kid looks pretty darn fast. He has two 3A State titles in the 200. Not the greatest clip, but you can see some of his speed in this 52 yard TD catch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KFG82uhnZ0

Trenton Pinson WR 5-11 185 Auburn, Wash. (Federal Way HS '10): Another speedy kid listed as a WR. but played RB in high school. State 4A runner-up in both the 100 and 200. His video claims some pretty impressive stats, including a 4.3 40, a 305 bench, and a 450 squat. "The fastest player in the state of Washington." - Washington Preps. This clip shows some really nice returns and runs. He looks like a really fluid runner and very fast. His elusiveness reminds me a little of T. Jones. I'd like to see how he stacks up against him in the 40.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW1T9x8nUdA

Mario Brown RB 5-9 175 Berkeley, Calif. (Bishop O'Dowd HS '10): Another bay-area RB for the Eagles! Had 1,200 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns as a senior, and 1,928 yards (9.2 per carry) and 23 touchdowns as a junior. Might not have had serious interest from big FBS schools because of his size, but could be another Rex Prescott type back for Eastern. Very fast, some really nice returns and runs in this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAS6WO1nq0g

Andre Willliams WR 5-9 170 Richmond, Calif. (El Cerrito HS '10): Another kid listed as a WR who was a RB in high school. 711 yards and had another 575 yards receiving with 13 total touchdowns in 2009. Couldn't find any clips, if anyone has anyone post 'em on here.

Cody Hecker RB 6-0 210 Sandpoint, Idaho (Sandpoint HS '10): Averaged almost 8 yards a carry. In his highlight reel he looks like more of a power runner than the others. Check out the hurdle at 1:17 of the clip.

Next up I'll dig around and try and find some stuff on the defensive players. The thing that strikes me most about this class is the amount of speed we recruited in the skill positions. I don't think we've ever had a class of kids this fast. It's nice to see that we can go out and recruit this quality of athletes not just within the state but outside as well. Although I'm not sure if any of these kids will play next year, I am *really* excited about seeing them in the future.
