So, with BYU leaving to go Independent and the potential move of Fresno and Nevada to the MWC, I feel like it could really open the door for PSU to the WAC in 2011. On the surface, the Vikes seem to be a great choice considering the newly remodeled Stadium in 2011 and Portland is a big market untapped by the WAC. Throw in the fact that the Humanitarian bowl is gonna die once Boise leaves, so it would make sense to have a bowl game in Portland, which is a much better travel destination than Boise, ID.

Not to dump water on the fire of your enthusiasm, but your suggested move is about three years too early. Simply put, we don't have the money. MAYBE if we start winning and drawing crowds - and money - it might work. There's nothing I'd like more.

I don't know. The WAC is now down to 6 teams for football after Fresno and Nevada left. Haven t heard any word on if SDSU or UNLV have accepted the WAC invitations, but It would seem that the WAC needs 4 teams. If they are going to pull from 1AA (what choice do they have) for at least 2 of those, PSU makes some sense. The average attendance figures for the WAC is around 22k. The Sunbelt only averages 16k. PSU could hit 15k, especially if they can generate some buzz by moving up and field a semi decent team.

As for money, I am sure they can figure something out. Maybe Uncle Phil will step in and help the Viks out.

Desperation might nake for some interesting moves. If the WAC wants to survive they will either waive some financial requirements or at least offer some incentives that would help schools like PSU join.

Well, I admit that the WAC Commissioner did say "even FCS teams" were being considered. I suppose it's possible we're one of them. Being a prof. I have a cautious and conflicted take on this. I was in the library today ordering a couple books ILL that we should have owned but couldn't because of limited acquisitions funds. Even with adjustments so-called by the WAC, it would still cost us a minimum $1 million to get in. Think how many books - research tools - that would buy! If the choice were put to the students and faculty, I wonder which they'd take? Yeah yeah, I know; the importance of university marketing and all that. I don't deny it. But as I say, I'm conflicted.

Thus, the Portland State Viking athletes, coaches and Athletics Department are on a true athletics mission---a veritable quest not unlike the Knight-errants of olde. The Holy Grail is not just to get better, but to get better quickly so that upward mobility be realized and in a timely fashion: to gain and accept (and cover the cost of) the invitation to greater glory.

Upward mobility takes place at Portland State in greater measure than at any other university in the state, perhaps even the entire West. The majority rather tend to maintaining the status quo. Upward mobility, however, is a true concomitant characteristic of Portland State University. The university literally changes people's lives, and does so in numbers to a more dramatic degree.

See the clock is ticking. May our leadership and those student-athetes who execute stay ahead of the time constraints and be victorious. When the time is realized for Portland State University to rise, we will all rise up with it. So let us go and do our part that we may bring that time present and rise together.
