Facility Improvements Announced

Well this is a good start; hopefully this is just the tip of the iceberg. Credit to Macriss for working with Gonzo and the powers that be to get money directed towards athletics. This probably means the interim tag will be removed and he becomes the official AD at some point down the road.

All work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the 2015-16 academic year. The Athletics improvements include:
- Yosemite Hall renovations will address dilapidated men’s and women’s locker rooms, the south lobby (outside The Nest) and its service areas - $1.8 million
- Baseball stadium lights will allow the baseball team to be eligible to host postseason tournaments; and student-athletes will miss less class time because of midweek day games - $650,000
- Baseball field re-grade will eliminate drop-off in outfield and improve student-athlete safety - $200,000
- Rowing will get three new rowing shells - $73,000
- Sand volleyball, which has played off campus during its first two years of existence, will see the construction of on-campus courts - $60,000
- Track and field will receive protective covering for its new track and equipment - $50,000
- Rowing will receive two new launch systems (motor boats) - $50,000
- Volleyball will receive a new sport court for its playing surface during matches - $30,000

The baseball improvements should keep Christiansen here for the long run (barring an offer he can’t refuse). I heard talks of updating the lobby area in the Nest to have more of a concessions/lounge feel to it; I’m guessing that is the work that will be done there.

I have no doubt Bill is the man for the job!

Clearly the biggest news is the new lights and field for hornet baseball (Coach tweeted about this a couple weeks ago). Upwards of $1M in improvements should go a long way in keeping him around. Especially with NCAA baseball, if a coach likes his town and has a family settled in there, it would take a huge opportunity (think Pac-12) for him to leave us.

The only other announcement I would like to hear in the short term future is $100K going towards replacing the green netting. Sounds simple and cosmetic, but would make a world of difference.

There's got be some donor out there willing to get this started!!!

I think it was replaced already for the Track and Field trials with a new version. I drove by the other day and it looked black

That's good news! I'll have to drive by the next time I'm in the neighborhood. I hope they are able to put up some banners to spruce up the outside. I'd also love it if the school hung banners or signage commemorating past Hornet accomplishments. Again, cosmetic in nature, but would be nice. And while mentioning Hornet past, does anyone have info, or links to Sac State athletic achievement? I've looked, but unsuccessfully so. All I could find was we were members of the Far West. Not much else. Would love to know records, stories and success rates. Why I'm a big proponent of the department building/implementing a athletics hall of fame (maybe in a newly renovated Yosemite Hall?).

So what does Gonzo's retirement do for potential facility improvements? Or anything regarding our sports programs for that matter. Makes me wonder if Gonzo and Wanless mailed it in the past few years because they didn't want to have big projects on there way out.

Slightly nervous about the retirement of Gonzo. He was as pro football as any president, and certainly an upgrade from Gerth. We'll see what happens

It all depends on how the new President will view athletics. I feel that most administrators understand the significance athletics can serve as far as raising the profile of a university and using athletics as a springboard for marketing to a community to garner support/donations.

Anyone want to lay odds on the chances of him forcibly enacting the event center fee so he can go out with a bang? Makes no sense that he would scuttle the effort last spring if he knew he was leaving.

Baylor Has provided a perfect solution to our mesh/netting problem
