Fall Camp is (NOW) Here!

I regret to inform you guys that Mr. Jones will not be with the Hornets this year, which is needless to say (well, I think anyway), is a true blow to the Hornets offense. Unfortunately, he couldn't get it done in the classroom, so he's ineligible.

THR-great stuff, thanks and welcome.

THR -- while I am the admin here, please do not take my admittedly outlandish opinions as the general consensus here. I have an ulterior motive in proclaiming Dom Carmazzi as our savior. The rest here, while they may or may not have an opinion on him, are their own people. They don't march to my tune, nor do I expect them to. If they did, then we'd be no better than AGS, which is one of the most outrageously slanted sites on the net. I'm proud of the great group we have, but I'd be disappointed if they just fell in line.

Carmazzi rules. But don't let MY opinion swing you, PLEASE.

With him flunking out won't it effect our percentage with the NCAA?

It probably will....though I think he might just be ineligible for the semester. If he is still in school and graduates on time, then it will not have an effect. Remember, what they are looking for besides progress in degree is graduation. I mean the whole APR thing hokey anyway. The NCAA is made of member schools. Schools whose presidents/chancellors and athletic directors make up the policies. They put this stupid APR thing on its athletes, but not the rest of its student body? That's absurd!

That's the bad thing about football and the academic eligibility rule. You go into the season ineligible, and you have no shot because you can't get eligible before the end of the season. Hoops, on the other hand, has an advantage in that it straddles the semesters. A similar athlete could get eligible through fall finals and be eligible for the spring semester. The fallback on that is that bringing back such a guy could very easily mess up team chemistry, especially given that hoops teams are much smaller.

Either way, though, these kids should have enough integrity to not slack off during the spring. Sure, there's summer school, but it's way too easy to get so far behind that summer school won't help. It doesn't matter how good you are; you can't help the team if you're on the shelf, particularly if you're there because you were too dumb to go to class or to ask for help if you needed it. Teams are REQUIRED to provide that help, but it's up to the individual kid to actually take advantage of it.

THR, any talk about Sac State playing Cal Poly in 2009?

There has been no word on whether Sac State plans on playing Cal Poly at the time. As I understand, the 09 Season is yet to be discussed, but as always, if I find out anything I'll let you know.

On an another note, the Hornets strength and conditioning session was cut short yesterday and there is currently no word on where they will be conditioning. Yesterday, Coach Sperbeck prohibited the team from practicing on the main field, apparently to keep it from getting destroyed from the teams drills and conditioning. The practice field currently is worn and being repaired, so the team decided to use the baseball field for conditioning. While they were out there, the baseball coach came to the field and kicked them off, which the Strength and Conditioning coach did not take to kindly to (to say the least). The session was cut short and the team was sent home. Good to see that the athletic department is getting along well, huh?

Other than that, it seems to be pretty quiet right now (Which is a good thing. We don't need problems before the season starts). As we approach August 3 and beyond, there will definitely be more to discuss. I agree with Hornet Homer... This fall camp should be great.

Thanks THR and good luck to the Hornets in 2008. I hope to see the Hornets back on the Mustangs schedule in 2009.

I've said it a thousand times...John Smith needs TO GO. Not only is he horrible, he's a giant a-hole.

Look at what Fresno State did this year...

OMG. That's one of the most disgusting things I've ever heard. We've been saying for years on the various iterations of SacBuzz that Smith has to go, but this just takes the cake. Kicking the football team off the baseball field when the AD has closed the football fields? Dump Smith NOW!!!

I believe baseball has their team camps coming up this week or the next. I agree with Coach Smith on this. Don't you think if the reverse happened the baseball players did their conditioning on the field in stadium that Sperbeck wouldn't go nuts as well.

It's the lack of working to together that bothers me. I'll guarantee you that Smith is so green with envy because the football team is in brand new spanking digs, he'll take any chance he can get to slight them.

The dude is a little napoleon that hasn't done anything since nearly winning the DII championship in 88. He's holding the athletic dept. hostage by continually saying he's retiring, only to stay on for another year because he has tenure.

Why does the practice field need repair? What happened to it and will it be ready for camp? Also, I believe there is a soccer field and another field North of that could be used for just conditioning. I agree with Sacto about Coach Smith not letting them use the baseball field. As far as communication goes, the baseball coach was obviously not called about field use. Without knowing Coach Smith, sounds like he's not a fan favorite.

Hornet Fever - Get Some !!

HH,

Smith has a horrible reputation in the Sacramento area amongst baseball people. Sac is a very good baseball region (it's turning into a football area though, as of late), yet Smith can't recruit here because he's burned so many bridges.

I knew specific incidents in the late 90's when Jerry Weinstein was at Sac City, won several national championships and had players go to places like Miami, yet Smith wouldn't recruit any of his players because he felt threatened by Sac City's success. If you look at the current roster there's only about seven kids from Sac on it.

I believe he's had one winning record in the last 12 years, as well.

I saw it mentioned else where, but that new coach they hired fvrom the Dakota's is supposedley being groomed to replace him

Smith's team draws 50 people to a game.

Sperbeck's team draws 10,000 people to a game.

Case closed, my opinion. Sperbeck should be allowed to hold practice in Gonzo's front lawn if needed to improve from 3-8.

Why don't we install Sprintruf on the practice track, since they won't install it in the stadium?

I believe the practice field is in the process of being re-seeded...to get ready for the start of practice in a couple of weeks. It makes sense.

I for one would love to have Field Turf in Hornet Stadium. You would not believe how many high schools in the area are now putting them in (take the initial hit in cost and save over the next 20 years).

It's so much more economical in the long run. I was shocked when I saw Natomas High school, who by no means has money, install it this summer

I've heard that a donor offered to install carpet in the stadium, but was denied because of javelin and shot put divots that would be created that can't be repaired easily.

I would prefer a carpet in the stadium. The economic argrument is in favor of carpet.; save water, fertilizer/pesticides/herbacides, infrastructure to maintain irrigation and maintenance, etc. The City Parks dept. in my town uses carpet when building city parks and soccer/football fields.

So, to solve the divot issue. Move the javelin/Put event to the grass practice track. The US Olympic Trials won't return and Eugene/Nike have the NCAA's locked up. National Track events will be far and few between at Sac.

Take down the current stadium and install parts of it around the grass practice/warm up track, say 10K capacity. Build a permanent 20K seat stadium with carpet in the current location.

Wake up GCM, wake up!
