Fall Camp Updates, Reports and Goings On

How are our RBs looking?

Aside from Custer and Merritt, this is still a question mark for me as well. Micah got a lot of carries in the last scrimmage but his numbers look the same as last year. May have been behind the youngster's on OL but looking to see an improvement. Not sure where Isiah Lewis is either. Don't want to see Pierce come back too soon and need Smith or Lewis to step up IMO.

Looking forward to the reporting on the next scrimmage from those who attend.

I'm hoping to see Custer return to his true form. His Junior year was okay, but it looked pedestrian compared to what he showed us his freshman and sophomore year.

If he stays injury free, this will take care of itself IMO. Excited to see all the parts working together behind this OL once the season begins.

So the play where our LB ran down a WR must have been Dre' Sonte Dorton, thats even more impressive, he is fassssst!

C'mon clawman, forreal it was Dorton? Who was the LB (Warren)?

It was Chris Ojoh who burned red turf to reach Dorton at the goal line. That effort from the center of the field to the sideline will be greaton coached tape

thx ron, heard anything on eb3?

From the RB Coach and SR:
“Antoine Custer is going to lead the pack, they’re going to feed off each other and they’re going to have fun,” said Maurice, a former UTEP running back. “(Custer is) having an outstanding camp. He’s healthy, gives me 100 percent every day, every drill.”
That’s good news for EWU purists who saw Custer battle injuries in 2018 and become the second option behind Sam McPherson, a senior who racked up 1,510 yards and 13 touchdowns before exhausting his eligibility.

#7 Weed, #21 Sise, #22 Prunty... The "eyes" have it. Not worried about the defensive backfield at all with these guys on the field.

It's like Collingswood at SR and I are on the same psychic wavelength...

https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/aug/23/young-eastern-washington-cornerbacks-aided-by-vete/

Dehonta Hayes, Tysen Prunty, Anfernee Gurley, Calin Criner and Anthany Smith have all seen substantial time at safety. Kedrick Johnson has also logged three starts at rover last season.

I always enjoy watching the post-practice/scrimmage interviews on media days.
Today, Dennis Merritt fired me up with an answer posed to him:

Collingwood: (Talking about Merritt growing up in Washington) ..."were you a Huskie kid or a Coug kid before you came here?"

Merritt: "If anything, I've always been an Eastern kid..."

GO EAGS!!!!

So the two's looked a lot like two's per this article. Would have been nice to have a series or two with the one's. EB3 news is non-existent. Make sure to read all the comments at the end of the article too.

Any eyewitnesses?

Coach Best:
On Turning the Page to Game Week: "We still have to mature as a football team. I don't think we are as close as we need to be from a maturation stand point. A part of that is leaning on coaches, but most of that leans on the upper classmen who have played a lot of games. We will be in adverse situations a week from now -- I can guarantee you that. Hopefully we have taken a step forward to be ready for those adverse situations, and to come out of those situations knowing we can make a positive out of a negative."

On DB's:
On Positives from Preseason Practices: "I think the cornerback position will be interesting to see. I think we found some guys that were maybe a little further along than we thought they were going to be coming in with losing our top four corners.

no punter? who's the special teams coach?? I posted this back in Jan of this year * Chiawana high school in Pasco has a punter Elijah Perez who was invited to play in the blue/grey all american game is the #15 ranked punter in the nation. He's only been punting 2 years and has had no contact yet..he's a good student. We already have an offer in for a lb from there in AJ Vongphachanh.

How do we look at punter and place kicker for next year?
Big shoes to fill with Roldan Alcobendas gone. Such a huge part of the game.

*We wanted AJ Vongphachanh real bad (went to FBS) and Perez wanted to go to EWU but no contanct?? He ended up at Alabama A&M am all black college that plays FCS...

Also not a peep on EB3 which of course to me means something is bad...bet UW knows more about the situation than we do. Bad feeling bout all this...EB3(and do we even have a backup..I mean a real backup) and no frickin punter...wtf

EB3 is fine. Talked to him at the poster signing. Just like the OL sitting out was just precautionary. He had a ton of reps in camp and will be getting all the 1 reps this week in prep of UW.

I thought our specialists looked good. Slyter obviously has a big leg and his FG accuracy seems to have improved proven by his FGs in fall scrimmages. The snapper was quick and accurate on punts and FG trys. I'm not that concerned with the punter situation. Other than one punt that was shanked out of bounds the many punts from yesterday looked good and got it done in a variety of ways.

My big concern was with the offensive depth. The twos and threes dont look ready yet. OL consistently got beat by the DL. Tammarick looks hesitant at rb but I thought Lewis showed some flashes. QBs were running for their life and seemed like they couldn't find a rhythm. They will get there just need more work.

Defense 2s and 3s looked very tough. Excited to see our D dominate again this year.

Barriere has been practicing, but they’ve held him out of the last two scrimmages. I think they wanted to hone in on the #2, which sounds like is going to be Talkington. The last scrimmage is usually reserved for playing the fringe guys to determine who rounds out the travel roster.

That said, we all knew Barriere’s health was going to be a huge issue. It’s imperative to make sure he’s healthy.

:thumb: Thanks for the eyewitness take JJ.. Huge fan of the defensive depth and glad to hear they were in the backfield against Eag's 2d OL Hope UW struggles slowing them down too.
