Good SR article: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2018/aug/05/eastern-washingon-offense-shines-in-first-full-tea/

Good to hear the offense came out and showed the continuity of a veteran squad already. Objectively, we know there isn't a defense in the land that can stop the Eag offense. McPherson coming back was awesome, he showed real vision, burst and fortitude last year before going down and excited about WR corp with Grady, Limu-Jones, Webster and all the young talented fellows. Hope the coaches have got a couple of packages for Mr. Excitement Dre Dorton, he was electric on kick returns last season. Screens?

Hoping for more than a bend and break Defense this season, history isn't on my side. Think there is enough talent to get stops. Key is getting off the field on third and long's (6yds or more). Don't know the percentage last year, but saw the D give up first downs on a large amount of 3rd and long's. Is there a clear answer? Guess I would rather see more pressure as a general rule (opponent dependent), especially with our depth in the secondary. Always believe it's got to be part of the D identity not a one off. High hopes regardless.

Anyone attending these practices, please give us your insight. The bit of video Collingwood has put out is good. Team looks "physical". Early days.

So, looking over the roster and sorted by year in the program and noted two names as FR that didn't sign on Dec or Feb national signing day.

LB Justin Patterson out of Junipero Serra (big CA program)
QB Michael Tara out of Heritage HS

Like both films. Tara has great feet, quick release and looked accurate. Patterson high motor, heads up play. Look like great after signing day pickups.

Been saying for a while I like the future of the LB core with some true athlete's recruited the past couple of years. Is this the year the 4-2-5 comes together? Additions like Sise make the Eags SUPER deep, now to become SUPER disruptive and get the offense the ball. Am OK with scoring 70+ in most games because D give the offense 3+ more possessions.

Somebody get the Chinese (?) hacker off the site please.

Totally agree on the Chinese hacker...

I know I can be quite negative, and I'm not going to buck that trend now. The talent on defense has been notable more years than not, and it simply hasn't translated to good defensive performances. I really thought the D would be a strength last year, but they looked like crap from the second quarter of the Texas Tech game until the end of the year. They really only played 6-7 good quarters of football last year.

Turnovers are great and I hope we get dozens... But really, what I want is a defense that can force some three and outs. I'll settle for a team in the top half of the conference in getting teams off the field on third down. Third down D and first downs allowed have been our Achilles heel for many years running.

Good article... Thanks for posting.

One thing I disagree with is that the writer states 7-4 might be good enough for some teams (this article references Southern Utah and Montana) getting in the playoffs. If any program wants to gamble that 7-4 is good for a tourney bid, have at it. Given our schedule last year, if 7-4 wasn't good enough, it shouldn't be good enough for much of anyone else. I'd expect 8-3 is the only way in moving forward without winning an auto-bid.

I think Eastern might be the best team in the conference, but the conference seems to be improving a lot. There's a healthy number of quality teams, which simply hasn't been the case very often recently. A lot of a team's success will rely upon having the right teams on the schedule and getting home games against the better teams on your schedule. Frankly, both Utah schools look awfully strong, the Montana's won't be slouches, and Idaho is probably the best they've been since the year they beat Bowling Green in the Whatever Bowl. UC Davis and NAU are a pair of sleepers that have a lot of talent. There aren't many gimmes this year.

Getting the D off the field on long 3rd downs felt like an issue last season. I only have the remembered feelings. The FCS stats on 3rd down defense had Eastern at 76th .387 3rd downs given up... Must say, it seemed far worse than that. Not all schedules are created equal, but of all teams with a top 20 SOS, EWU had to have the worst D stats.

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs/current/team/701/p2

115th in total defense, nearly 900 plays against and nearly 6 yards a play might be coloring my memory. Perhaps it was too many first downs a possession that makes me think the D gave up to many 3rd downs..

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs/current/team/22/p3

The D has had some great players over the past 5 seasons and hasn't played up to the talent level would be my contention. Last season, I put this squarely on the coaching staff and got a bit of a whacking. Whack away, this is on the D coaching staff. Essentially, this will be their 4th season together. There may be more going on there than meets the eye. Last season is water under the bridge.

I hope they shorten possessions by getting off the field on longer 3rd downs. This would be HUGE. Expect the offense to be very productive and if they can add 5-8 effective runs, will shorten the game 5 minutes or so.. This may be the final piece to improvement on the defensive side by making the opponents Offense sit a little longer and throw off their tempo (???).. Looking forward to seeing the great players play and for some upside surprise on the D in all phases.
