Fall Camp?

Only chatter I have seen/heard has been via the Hornet football Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/SacStateFootball

There is a brief interview with Coach Sperbeck posted. I am hoping to make it out there and check out a practice or two. Camp just started Sunday so there are still a few weeks left before the Hornets gear up for SJSU. Hornetsports typically posts summaries following the scrimmages. OG67 is our inside man, maybe he has something to add.

The State Hornet (student run newspaper) had this article:

Ok, thank you SD.

I did see this on twitter just now....

Sports ✎ Recruits ‏@SportsRecruits 31m
S/O to former Salesian QB Jihad Vercher who will be taking snaps at QB w/ the first team today at Sac State. #D1Bound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faCAkMqm9K8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; …

I'm no Safron fanboy, but the only way he's not the starter this year is if he is injured. @SportsRecruits seems to be a self-promoting outfit. Jihad would be best served sitting out a year, but who knows, maybe he's a stud that can't be held back and Safron's our new slot WR.

I agree. Safron finished last season strong even though he struggled early. Have to think he will only improve entering his 2nd year of Peterson’s system. My guess is the coaches landed Vercher with promises of a shot at the starting gig which they are now fulfilling via reps with the first team. Hard to see Vercher not getting a redshirt this season, especially with McDade transferring in to provide additional depth at QB. :twocents:

I did not watch the Hornets last year, but I hear Safron has a issue with accuracy and sometimes just makes poor decisions. This being close to a 50/50 pass run offense makes that an issue. The backfield lacks depth and Zeke is a bit banged up. Taylor nursing hamstring. Coleman carries the load if we opened today?

Safron does lack accuracy and will frequently pepper the feet of the RBs in the flats. Then the very next play he'll roll out and hit a WR on a deep out, right on the button. I would classify his play as unreliable, but streaky. If you watch the Colorado game from last year, he looks like a dual threat stud. Then you look at the UCD game and he looks like a guy trying to force things with a bad attitude to boot. Regardless, unless he's hurt, I don't see him reverting to a backup role.

Yes, Coleman would be the guy.

I caught some of the practice yesterday afternoon. Assuming the players were wearing the numbers as listed on the roster, here is what I saw:

QB:
Safron was his normal so-so self. Vercher has a cannon for an arm, too bad he can't see over his linemen. McDade was very unimpressive. Note that I only saw a limited amount of snaps but it seemed like Vercher got more reps than McDade.

OL:
Got dominated by the DL. Neilsen was seeing reps with the first team at LG along side Wallace at C and Stickney (could have been Worthley) at RG. Milanovic and Hanson were the tackles.

RB:
Coleman and Robinson saw most of the reps, Kellerman saw some reps as well.

WR/TE:
Greenwood stood out the most. I don't think Norrise was suited up but a lot of players were rotated in and out. Carter made a catcher here and there. Sander and Broadnax saw the most action at TE. Overall nothing impressive but I think the QBs and WRs are still trying to get in tune with each other.

DL:
Everyone rotated in here, I couldn't really keep track of who was in or not. They dominated the OL and prevented Safron and Co from getting clean throws off.

LB/DB:
Again hard to keep track of who was in, mainly because I was watching the offense. Hannum stood out when the 2's went up against each other. Charrette also had a huge hit that got everyone going. Duckett yells a lot.

ST:
Coleman and Greenwood were shagging punts when they were practicing PRs. Not sure if this means anything. The long snapping during the full speed punt return practice was on the mark.

I disagree with the last statement. With Saffron, the coaches know what they have and he realistically will only get you to 7-4. I think they are looking to see if the upside with the other QB's can potentially get them a higher trajectory.

I don't think your giving Safron a fair shake, let's remember he was a young sophomore QB last season who, although had game experience, was very limited. He rose to the occasion in many big games was a dual threat for most of the season. I believe he was injured during the ISU game and that is overlooked greatly. I believe this year will bode well for him being that he has more field knowledge and great offensive weapons. I hope he has learned to throw the ball away in pressure situations, and if so he will be a standout!

Caught some of the Saturday afternoon practice and today's afternoon practice; here is what I saw:

The QB's and receivers are starting to gel. Vercher is getting a lot of reps with the one's and has a damn good arm. Safron also made some good throws today, hit a receiver right on the button on a fade route for a TD during 7 on 7's. McDade looked better as well. The QB battle will be interesting and they are each pushing each other to be the best they can be.

None of the receivers are really standing out, however they are all making the catches they need to make. There were a couple of acrobatic catches but I couldn't make out the numbers (I think one was made by Harrison). Broadnax is having a good camp at TE.

The OL looks a lot better from last week. The QBs had time to find their receivers today. The running game looks just okay, but the play call balance is about 95% pass. Jordan Robinson is having a good camp and he and Coleman look effective catching the ball out of the backfield.

Defense looks okay so far, they swarm to the ball well. It's a who's who along the DL. Eskew and Sankey were getting reps at DE on the one's. I think the interior one's are Umufuke and Mazza. I think Fernandez is getting reps along side Davis at LB with the one's but I'm not sure. Hannum and Smith are seeing action at LB with the two's. It looks like Kendall is the favorite to be the starting SS with the returners rounding out the secondary one's.

The bad news is the injuries are starting to add mount up. A lot of players seem like they are limping around (could just be fatigue but I dunno, I'm not a doctor and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn). Totty was sporting a crutch this afternoon but no boot, hopefully its just a sprain. Mazza has an elbow wrapped but still played in live action. Unless Castro, Worthley, Norrise, Odiase are sporting other numbers I can't make them out on the field.

Great update SD...

So I haven't made it out their much so far...my son is on the "shelf" until week 5 or 6 from lisfranc surgery...but has been keeping me in the loop. Alot of young guys are getting work in team drills due to people being banged up and trying to get healthy for week 1.

QB - Safrons job to lose, I see McDade ending up in the 2 spot and using a redshirt on Vercher, even though he is capable of being a good backup this year...just don't see them wasting a year of eligibility on a future player unless really needed. No significant injuries in this area.

WR - likely starters for Harrison, Carter, and Norrise. Robertson and Agude likely to rotate with starters. JC transfers Greenwood, Hunkle and DePalma still learning system. Injuries, Norrise little sore, Cox out until mid-season after surgery.

TE spot goes to Broadnax. Hikutuni likely to get alot of time as well. Sander may redshirt unless they use him for special teams. No major injuries I am aware of.

RB - Expect Graham and Coleman to get most of the work. Warren can be in the mix here too, expect Robinson will redshirt.

OL - Expect Milanovic and Hanson to have good years, Stickney should be back in the mix after being out with injury last season. No major injuries that I am aware of, just the typical bumps and bruises.

DL - Still running DL by committee, which I believe keeps them fresh and fast, especially when dealing with some larger OL's. Again, No major injuries that I am aware of, just the typical bumps and bruises.

LB - This is the area that concerns me, not because of talent but because of depth and experience. Davis is a stub but the others are working to get in the mix and may require a few true freshman to be thrown into the fire.

DB - Even though we lost a stub at safety, we actually got deeper and stronger at the safety position and have both corners coming back. Expect Odiase and Armstrong to start at Corners and saftey positions are still up for grabs.

Kickers - Punting duties shouldn't change....PAT kicking will be interesting as I don't know much about the player that came in. Word is that Castaneda lost backing from the palyers and team last year after an incident on and off the field.

Thanks OG, I don’t see it much different than you.

The QB depth chart will be interesting. Since Vercher is getting more reps than McDade, will McDade be properly prepared should he be needed?

At LB, Hernandez is coming into this season with 30 appearances. He had a great game in the Colorado upset and I think he will be the favorite to start alongside Davis. Beyond those two it’s a who’s who of young and inexperienced talent.

The scrimmage went well today. First offense moved the ball and looked solid. Vercher got the 2nd most reps behind Safron, he also serves as the holder on FGs; I have a hard time seeing him redshirt this season. Safron was solid in the short to mid range throws but was his usual inconsistent self when throwing the ball down the field. Carter and Broadnax were the most impressive in the passing game. Coleman looked solid on the run game as Graham was held out and didn't suit up. The offense looked well during the 2 minute drill as well.

Pray for a healthy OL, the 2nd team OL is not good and was completely dominate by the 2nd team DL. A key injury or two on the OL and this offense will have some major issues.

The first defense had their moments too. Totty didn't suit up and Sankey looks really good filling in that void at DE on the first team. Kendall had some good plays at the SS spot. A lot of defenders rotated in throughout the entire scrimmage and I have to say we have some solid depth everywhere with the exception of some inexperience at LB.

Special teams was okay. Hernandez looked to get the most play at LS but I think both he and Latham were rotated in. All the snaps were on target and this should be fine in it carries over into the season. The first PAT was blocked but other than that the kicking was solid. Aguilar looks the be the guy for place kicking and he nailed some from 45+ yards. If he can carry this over into the season the kicking duties should be solid. Carter got most of the reps at PR.

No major injuries were sustained and as mentioned Totty and Graham did not play. I didn't see Stickney out there and someone on the far side was on crutches and in a boot (Stickney or Totty?).

Hornetsports will probably post a release sometime today and my season preview should be out shortly.

Does anyone know what happened to Andy Gramajo #26. Once the new roster photos came up he was no longer there.
No idea, maybe he left the team. Could possibly be an error on the roster.

I'd also like to add that yesterdays event was well organized. Lots of free stuff for fans and plenty to do for the kids. The video board was pumping out announcements and other tidbits for the crowd and a snack booth was set up as well. Great effort by the staff for making this enjoyable for all attendees.
