FCS Playoffs 2nd Round EWU @ UM Game Day Thread

Love the math Ranger.. What a fun thread. Did Montana find an offense when I wasn't looking? I liked Cam before the first game but on the Griz board many were begging to get the other QB in... Cam gets sidelined and the Griz offense goes from unspectacular to pathetic and now Cam can do no wrong. All hail Cam... :?

Hope Eagle coaches work on proper visualization revolving around situational awareness to cut down on the asinine poor plays (drops, poor throws, missed blocks etc) . Saw an Emmitt Smith interview many years ago and he was asked about an unlikely TD run to win a game, his response was "earlier in the game, Jimmy Johnson, came over and told him, you're going to get the ball, follow your lead blocker into the whole, spin out of a would be tackle and take it to the endzone" In the next series Emmitt got the ball, followed his lead blocker, spun off the LB and scored. I couldn't find the video to share.

Not saying a coach has to be prescient, but helping players get into the right mindset is key. Running unfamiliar plays doesn't help, playing not to lose doesn't help, taking the ball out of your 6th year all world seniors hands doesn't help. Example, Eastern used the tight formation late on 4th and 2 (bad), used play action (good), EB3 threw a catchable ball (good) to a wide open Roberson (good) but he wanted to score more than make the catch for the 1st down and it went through his hands (bad)... You can see his head move off the ball at the last moment. Making that catch was way more important than making a "play". Wish I could say that was the only instance of lack of focus. Eagles are perfect on the road this season. Maybe it will help their focus :-) Hope the short week reduces distractions

Not seeing this game much differently than the last game. McCann has had 4 weeks with the offense as OC. I don't know what that means. is the offense used to him now? Will he continue to add value to the running game? Is there enough trust to just let EB3 make plays? Is Best too involved? IDK..

Went back and watched a lot of the offense against UNI. Came away even more impressed with the slight changes McCann has made to the run game. Honestly, on several of those short 3rd or 4th downs Eagles blocked the backside against the DE stopping them from crashing down and making a negative play and/or had a lead blocker in proper position. Too many execution errors from EB3 :? and several missed blocks. For example on the 4th down pitch play to the right, lead blocker comes across the formation in motion and does a nice job of getting their block but the right tackle misses on the LB; the play breaks down from there. UNI's great safety eventually makes the play on the edge, he was definitely an X factor in this game as was EB3's decision making. I asked myself if the unfamiliarity with the plays may have contributed. I don't think so, most of the changes are minor changes to many of the plays they've run and just give Eastern much better odds to gain yards, open more options and keep EB3 upright to make plays downfield. Change is difficult though. :)

If SELA upsets JMU would we go there?

no, because you will be eliminated on friday night...just the way it works...be cool if they do upset JMU we would get two home games..before most likely going to fargo but you never know maybe the football gods really do favor the griz and ndsu gets beat and 3 home games dang

Just the way what works? EWU has defeated Montana at home more than a few times. In fact we are 8-3 against you since 2010 and beat you twice in 2014. You act like we have no chance at all.

I feel like we need to use more double tight formations in short yardage. Especially if we take the snap from a shotgun formation. Just my $.02.

Can be effective. Montana's DL speed is impressive so any lateral running game has to be well blocked. IMO, the run scheme's have been improved, the execution against really good defenses might be a little spotty. The more motion, misdirection, pulling lead blockers and decisive cuts by the RB/QB can only help both the run game and play action passing game. What is 2 cents worth these days? Guess combined we have 4 cents now ;-)

Anyone heard anything on EB3’s injury? Rumor is that he rolled his ankle pretty good against UNI.

I don't think he rolled it. I'm fairly certain it was a cheap shot from one of the UNI defensive linemen who twisted his ankle after a tackle. I think it happened early in the 4th quarter. I don't want to speculate too much but we shouldn't be surprised if someone else is out there on Friday night.

Yeah, he didn't roll it. FWIW, it was pretty deliberate. Believe it was #94 - total POS.

FWIW, EB3 is listed on the two-deep...although we all know that's not worth a ton. There are a few other plays listed on there as well who have previously been out with injuries...like starting TE Blake Gobel and Wyatt Musser at RG.

Defensively we look pretty healthy. Hoping to see Eli Doyle in this game.

I saw that #94, Tim Butcher wrenching on EB3's angle after the tackle. It's clear he did that. He's a dirty bastrad!!

Whatever happened to Johnny Edwards IV? He's had some ridiculous yardage games, and then just seems like he's nowhere to be found for the rest of the season. He had a good start to the year with long TDs against Western Illinois. And I don't remember him playing another down.

Uniform.. Cale Lindsay - one the most improved players this season IMO.

I don't think he got hurt that way... when I saw him limp off it was after the 4th down option play that we had deep in their territory. He took a weird hit and kind of rolled an unusual way.

I don't know whether to say poor Wyatt Musser, or just celebrate his ability to rebound. Dude was had a mountain of injuries this season... I think he's practically been carried off the field in three different games. And yet he keeps coming back. He must have a high threshold for pain. We saw a lot of guys with similar injuries historically miss a month. Musser keeps jumping back in the fray and has become a damn good OL.

+3 home field makes sense in a coin flip game. Looks like Sac St is getting 8.5 as a 4 seed and the Kats are giving 12.5. Hope they got that crap they put on the field against the Griz worked out.

As far as "stone cold" goes... he'll be ready
