FCS Playoffs Round 2 - #8 Sac State vs #11 South Dakota State

Targeting called back. Even announcers were stunned.

Horse collar “sack” right in front of both officials, no calls.

Can’t play against the refs too. That’s garbage
 
Extremely proud of the comeback.

I think the refs screwed us on this one. The most important drives to put the comeback into overdrive, horse collar “sack” and no call. Right in front of BOTH officials.

And targeting called back.
 
19-24 Hornet loss. Hornet defense played outstanding in the 2nd half. Hornet offense couldn't come up with enough plays to get the win. The slow start to the game cost us the win.

Got to block better on those sacks. I believe that horse collar one came with just 3 guys rushing.

Regardless of the questionable calls, the game was there for the taking. Hornet offense just didn't get it done, and Taylor didn't have a great game calling the plays either.
 
Gotta think Thompson is going to be a hot commodity after calling a defense that shutdown this potent SDSU offense like he did (plus the stellar defensive performance in general since his arrival). I'll be surprised if he is still here this offseason.
 
Yup. Thompson been waiting for a HC opportunity and he might have just earned it. Holding SDSU to 24 points is pretty darn impressive considering what they’ve been averaging this year.

The offense, was unfortunately what let this team down today.
 
Bummer to see the clock run out on the season for Sac State. Was hoping for one last drive.

The team fought til the end and came up just short on national TV against a powerful opponent in front of 10,031 tonight

Great to see the football program at Sac State put together back to back championship seasons

Proud of the team for a fantastic season and accomplishing many notable achievements!!

Enjoyed 3 plus months of Saturdays cheering on this team..
 
Still processing everything, but it was a decent size crowd, and the energy was just sucked out from the beginning. We were not overmatched or anything, just saw a lot of mistakes we didn’t see all year long, red zone Ints, missed calls, etc. People wanted us to run the ball more, but we were behind by a lot, and needed to play the catch up game - which we almost did successfully.

I really hope we can get a chunk of this team back and make another run at it next year.

Still processing everything as well. My issue was why wasn’t Skattebo used more, 3 carries, come on? In the redzone we were struggling and Skattebo could have definitely helped. Great season though, glad we made the game respectable.
 
I have to agree with all of you.

First, I'm disappointed that I didn't see Kadeezy's post before I left for the game, or I would have tried to find him.

Second, we came out flat once again. I'm not sure if the layoff had anything to do with that, but it happened. QB1 was making a ton of bad reads early, and we left the run game WAY too early. Sac_hornets' point about Skattebo was discussed among intelligent folk in the stands. Perkinson didn't seem quite ready to come back, and we really missed Sattebo's running. That said, the coaching staff made a TON of outstanding adjustments at the half, and our reads turned out better. The drops didn't help, but they seemed to go away during the second half. My season-long point (applicable from HS through the NFL) that passing around the goal line is NOT the way to go was proven once again on our two-point attempt. Getting under center, perhaps in a tight I Formation with three TEs (or maybe with a flanker set strong side) and a straight-up triple option, perhaps with a pulling guard lead, would have been perfect. That said, taken as a whole, the second half proved that we truly DID belong in the playoffs this year, and some of the other second round scores show that point off.

I was highly upset with SDSU's choice to ice Sentkowski while they were up 24-0. That was NOT good sportsmanship at all. As some noted, the officiating was spotty at best. That hit on QB1 really WAS targeting, and the guy should have been ejected. Would that have helped us to win? Maybe, maybe not. Too much time had come off the clock with our slow start. But what's right is right.

We'll be back next year, I'm quite sure....

Shoutout to the band, seems to be getting bigger and better the last few years offer about a decade or so of small numbers, bad uniforms, and weirdness.
 
I'm not sure what to think. I just compared the 2019 and 2021 box scores. We had the same start as in 2019, and something of the same second half resurgence. But our second half offensive output was better in 2019, while our defense was much better this time around. Put our 2019 offense and 2021 defense together, and we win BOTH of these matchups.

Clearly, our defense is in order. Should we get a separate OC with full play-calling duties? Perhaps promote Fresques to OC and hire a new QBs coach? Something has to be done to get us past the first half of our first playoff game.

We're back to back BSC Champs, and this season we share the title with no one, so no, nothing needs to be changed. Team just needs to execute in the post season and stick with what has been working all season long from the get go.

Agreed, thank God they finally got rid of those trucker hats and t-shirts from the last few years. Also glad to see the band at hoops again.
 
Sounds good, SD. You can probably chalk it up to sudden end-of-season frustration. You have a good perspective. Thank you for keeping us level....
 
No Changes. Great staff. Just need little more depth to stay strong if any players get injured.
I truly think if we had beaten SDSU we would have made it to championship game! I expect SDSU might win it this season? TBD
 
Great second half, we gave up too much in first half, but they kept battling. My family all attended SDSU, my cousin told me today that they all thought if we had about 3 minutes more we would have won the game. I think SDSU walks over Nova, and possible MT state may take SHSU down this weekend. I thought the winner of our game would at least make Semis.

Speaking of Recruiting I think we are going to have best class ever, real excited for the next group of Hornets!
