FCS Stadium Map

Interesting map of FCS programs on championshipsubdivision.com. Granted some of the western states don’t have much of a population density, it’s still amazing to see how many I-AA programs there are in the eastern half of the country. In particular, the NE states are loaded. Quite the contrast to the 4 spread throughout all of CA.

The site’s consolidation of stadiums from select conferences is interesting to thumb through too. Much more useful than the long stadium thread on AGS. Some fairly small ones, but not too many with “brown rings” around their fields like Sac (albeit a NCAA Championship / Olympic Trial quality brown ring.) ;)

Which is why I suspect behind the scenes the push to get football and men's hoops up to winning ways. Ideally, the fit into the WAC would be perfect for us with three other schools withing 3 hours of us. Would help save on travel costs for a lot of sports.

Not so sure about that, SHA. Those savings would be more than eaten up by the required trip to Hawaii. In addition, there will be trips to New Mexico State; Logan, UT; and the fact that a trip to Idaho would be a REQUIREMENT in that there are two WAC teams there.

First, Hawaii usually pays all expenses in football, men's and women's hoops and women's volleyball. Second, going to Idaho is like going to Eastern Washington. Third, Utah State is like us going to either Weber State or Idaho State (since all our teams fly to SLC and bus to Pocatello). And its easy to get to Las Cruces as you fly into El Paso and drive an hour.

The savings we get from going to Fresno, San Jose and Reno would be immense (not to mention that being in a conference like that, we would easily draw at home in the major events and make money). See the only thing we would have to up in costs in for 22 more football scholarships. That's it. We fund the same amount in the other sports.

Not quite, we would need another $750K for full time assistants and to increase Sperbecks salary up to FBS minimums. Plus, we would have to add 22 womens scholarships and associated costs. And we need a stadium that is FBS quality, add another $35M to the tab of $70M needed for the arena.

NMSU, USU and Idaho have all been put on notice by the NCAA and the WAC that unless they get their attendance to 15K, they are highly eligible to be booted out of the WAC. SJSU isn't too far behind these three.

Until we average 15K on a rainy day, we have no business being FBS. We couldn't pay the guarantees to draw any non-WAC schools to play at home, so we would be like SJSU and Idaho playing FCS schools just because they will show up for FCS guarantees. If we are going to play FCS non-conference teams, why not stay FCS?

A good FCS conference would include:

Sac State
SJSU
Idaho
NMSU
Utah State
Davis
Cal Poly (?)
Portland State (?)
N. Arizona (?)

All have limited budgets and facilities are close enough for Greyhound when needed and have attendance that is similar.

This is fun to discuss, but reality is it won't happen. We are at least a decade away from even being able to discuss this legitimately, longer unless something new develops (donations).

Where would the football team practice if Smith won't let them use the baseball field?! Add another $1M for an artificial turf practice field.

Ok, i forgot to add the additional funds for women's hoops. I wasn't trying to make the upgrade in pay for assistants (I was strickly going on the scholarship assessment...which, for 22 more, I would add either Women's Swimming or Women's Lacrosse).

As for an extra practice field, where on campus are we going to put it? All the fields are tapped out unless we take one of the IM fields and put Field Turf in.

How big of a footprint will the rec ctr take up? From what I have seen it kinda wraps up close to the practice track, so no room there. Sprin/Field turf will need to be installed somewhere. I'd say add womens hockey in the new arena.

When is the parking garage scheduled to be started/completed? Maybe once that is done, take the parking lot directly across the street from the stadium and convert it into a practice facility.

Parking Garage 3 is done. The lot that is next to it and behind the east side of the stadium is where the planned arena is going to go...so no dice there.

This is just a matter of semantics, but the NCAA in and of itself can't officially boot ANYBODY from their current conference. They CAN and perhaps will forcibly re-designate them FCS. Given the fact that such a move would for all practical purposes kill that conference's RPI, the conference would then likely take the step of at least expelling these members, if not actually replacing them. (The replacement would realistically have to occur to mantain auto-bids in sports with any form of playoffs.)

I realize that the ultimate outcome is the same. But, at least in theory, the WAC or any other conference in this situation would not be REQUIRED to take the subsequent follow-on action. Admittedly, to NOT do so would be to commit post-season suicide in terms of RPI. But there are plenty of HS-level examples of multi-division leagues, usually involving private schools. One in particular would be the San Joaquin Athletic Association, which is primarily a CIF Division I league, but contains Division IV Stockton-St. Mary's. One might think it disingenuous to try to extend a high school level to the collegiate level, but the precedent DOES exist. The realities of RPI make such an occurrence highly unlikely, but it is nevertheless POSSIBLE in theory.

Sac State-$12,590,676
SJSU-$16,970,448
Idaho-$12,730,220
NMSU-$19,434,062
Utah State-$12,822,145
Davis-$17,219,932
Cal Poly-$12,044,805
Portland State-$8,789,998
N. Arizona-$10,376,566

Davis is skewed b/c they sponsor 28 varsity sports and have extremely high tuition. Sac sponsors 20 varsity sports. Portland State is a shocker as I thought they would have a higher budget.
