My other alma mater, Texas State (formerly Southwest Texas State) is making a unified push to upgrade to FBS status. If nothing else it is interesting to watch the program and university grow and upgrade.
I was actually at the Sac State-Bobcats game to watch the first Volek coached team. If I remember correctly, the first play from scrimmage during the Volek era was our QB throwing a pick. Talk about a buzz kill.
When I was there we played I-AA ball in a brand new 15K seat stadium Jim Wacker helped build. The football program has lanquished in I-AA (FCS) off and on since the mid 80's. They had a good run a few years back but have since dropped off to ho-hum.
A new fieldhouse was built to close the stadium into a horseshoe. Really nice. And they have a track inside the stadium. Attendance averaged around 7-9K for a long period. Obviously this is no Montana. The Bobcat students voted to tax themselves to pay for the FBS move. They currently pay $3,497 for tuition alone per semester. Stop bitching Sac State students your tuition is miniscule compared to the rest of the country.
Why is the university making a big push to go FBS? When I was there we were know as Suitcase U. Everyone went home to Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, etc. The campus was deserted for the most parts on the weekend. Something has changed.
It will be interesting watching this program and university upgrade.
