Final BSC Stretch

With the Hornets win over MSU, they have stayed in contention for a BSC Tournament berth. Since much of the BSC is a complete clusterfvck, the remaining 2/3 seeds are up for grabs. UM, UNC, and WSU are pretty much a lock for the top 3 seeds with NAU in a good place to land the 4th seed but they still need to finish strong.

Standings & Remaining BSC Schedule:
NAU: 6-6 BSC, 14-10 Overall
  • • Feb 16: vs EWU
    • Feb 24: @ Sac State
    • Feb 26: @ UNC
    • Mar 2: vs PSU
    • NAU should do no worse than 2-2. They have struggled on the road but should make the post season. Sac State needs them to beat EWU and then the Hornets need to beat them at home.
EWU: 5-7 BSC, 8-16 Overall
  • • Feb 16: @ NAU
    • Feb 24: vs MSU
    • Feb 26: vs UM
    • Mar 2: @ WSU
    • EWU has been on and off all season. I didn’t expect them to do this well but have tough games the rest of the way. If they knock off MSU they are probably in the tournament. Sac State needs EWU to lose out.
MSU: 5-8 BSC, 11-14 Overall
  • • Feb 24: @ EWU
    • Feb 26: @ PSU
    • Mar 2: vs ISU
    • They have fallen apart the last couple of weeks but have a favorable schedule down the stretch. Sac State needs MSU to beat both ISU and EWU.
PSU: 4-8 BSC, 11-13 Overall
  • • Feb 16: @ WSU
    • Feb 24: vs UM
    • Feb 26: vs MSU
    • Mar 2: @ NAU
    • Ineligible for post season play due to sanctions. Only likely win is against MSU which would help Sac State, EWU, and ISU.
ISU: 4-8 BSC, 8-16 Overall
  • • Feb 16: @ UM
    • Feb 24: vs WSU
    • Feb 26: vs UNC
    • Mar 2: @ MSU
    • ISU has gotten it together the past week. I didn’t expect them to do this well but have tough games the rest of the way. Their only probable win is @ MSU; Sac State needs ISU to lose out.
Sac State: 4-9 BSC, 7-17 Overall
  • • Feb 24: vs NAU
    • Feb 26: vs WSU
    • Mar 2: @ UNC
    • The Hornets have been on a wave of momentum the past month. They will need to keep this up and win 2 of 3 to at least have a shot at post season. NAU has been terrible on the road so that has to be the best chance at a win. The Hornets will have to scrape for another win somewhere. It doesn’t look like UNC will be in a position to rest their players heading into the Tournament.
It’s going to come down to who wants it more. With 3 BSC games left in BSC play, the Hornets control their own destiny. If they run the table they are in, if they win 2 they probably need some help. Anything less and they are done. Personally I think MSU is in due to their favorable schedule and the 6th seed will come down to EWU, ISU, and Sac State. EWU holds the edge but could very well lose out leaving the last spot up for grabs.

Thoughts?

SDH: I doubt if the Hornets will get in, but there's always hope. I think we might win one of the final three if we are lucky. NAU is probably our best chance, but they took it to us early down there and we were never in it, losing by 21. We blew our best chance of getting in by losing those two early conference games in overtime to EWU and ID ST and then that home 2 point loss to MSU. We'd be in already if we had those games back.

I think the Bengals could lose all four of their remaining games which is good for us, but that means MSU would pick up their 6th win, which is bad for us. MSU isn't very good on the road, but they host IDST. I think EWU can take MSU in Cheney too, so that gives EWU their 6th win and we are out of it unless we win at least two then. NAU should be able to pick up at least one more win to get to 7, so they would be in for sure.

We're a long shot, but occasionally long shots win. N'Diaye needs to keep out of foul trouble; we need him out there to have a chance.

Yeah those early BSC losses did us in. That’s why I started the “Now What?” thread after we dropped those games, I knew it would be an uphill battle from there on in. We needed season sweeps of EWU and ISU and that didn’t happen. At least there is still an outside chance the Hornets could make the post season if the stars align and the Hornets can get some wins against tough opponents. The fortunate thing is the other teams battling for the final seed also have tough schedules. Anything can happen and I hope the Hornets can continue to grab wins.

All I know is Weber is going to have to play like Wildcats to get a win @ Sac.

Do you know if Lillard Is traveling with the team?

I think he does, Im not sure. I'll check on that.

He travels to some of them, It was mentioned at the WSU coaches luncheon that Lillard will be traveling with the team when they play at San Jose State.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it! I ask because I had circled the Weber State game on the Sac State schedule because I wanted to catch him play, but since he's injured I still wanted to know if he was showing up. I went to high school with Lillard and have seen him play since those days.

Thats pretty cool that you went to High School with him, I wouldnt be surprised if he traveled to the CSUS game, Sacramento being so close to his home town. His family and friends usually go see him play at Sac and it gives Weber a little road fanbase.

Yea, it'd be cool if he showed up. Our high school has been producing a lot of D1 talent recently. Most recently we have the #22 player in the country- Jabari Brown.

Well hopefully Jabari Brown follows in Lillard's footsteps and dawns the Purple, White and Black :D

Weber also has another player from Oakland, Frank Otis, played at McClymonds High School. Transfered to Weber from SMU.

Brown committed to Oregon, as he stated he wanted to play in their new arena among other things. Weber State does a good job of picking up Cali talent- it'd be nice if the UC Davis coaching staff had an idea of the amount of talent in the Bay Area.

I remember when Otis was playing, McClymonds (Mac as we call them locally) made the state title game for several years in a row, I think only winning one of them those years (NorCal champ vs. SoCal champ). As I mentioned, I went to many games when Lillard was in high school, and remember his last game as a Wildcat (also our high school mascot) at Saint Mary's College in the NorCal semi-finals where we barely lost. He had a great run with us during his years.

Well good luck to Brown at Oregon. Good place to play basketball, Oregon's new arena is very nice, but Im not sure I can say the same about thier actuall court.

Funny how his High School's mascot is a Wildcat, and he now plays for a University who's mascot is also a Wildcat. Its been Great to be able to watch Lillard progress here at Weber, Im glad he is gonna get his medical redshirt and get his junior year back. Weber scheduled a game vs St.Mary's after the Big Sky tourney to ensure that Lillard could get under the 30% percent games played in the season.

Speaking of schedules, I have heard rumors that Weber was in talks with both Cal Poly and UC Davis about playing a home and home in basketball in the next few years, have you heard anything about that at all?

I agree, Lillard has had a lot of progress during his time at Weber, you guys did a great job recruiting. That Weber/SMC game is interesting, and much more so if Lillard was playing (tough competition against a tough player). Nice to see SMC agree to a game this late in the year.

As for scheduling a game with Weber State, I haven't heard anything from the UCD side. I would like to play a home and home with you guys as I've witnessed first hand the class program you guys run. I'd imagine you guys will try to get more games in the Bay Area/NorCal for Lillard to play close to home.

The only known road game for Weber next year is @ BYU.

Our home schedule will include Utah, Utah State, SUU, San Jose and possibly Tulsa. I would love for Weber to get home and homes with more Big West Schools, or just play more Big West schools. I would love to see Weber start a home and home with the Aggies of UC Davis, heck I would like Weber to play UC Davis anyway whether its at home on the road or at a neutral site.

i have a feeling that these guys are going to places like Weber and Montana (Will Cherry) due to academic considerations. You'd have to think that a UCSB or Davis would be more attractive to a Bay Area product then either Bozeman or Ogden (no offense, Wildcat). parents and family could watch them play much more easily than if they are playing in the BigSky.

That's a good schedule, having Utah and Utah State at home. I would like to play Weber State, but we are known to schedule DII and DIII teams for our OOC schedule. I can see you guys coming to the area to play us and Pacific possibly.

It could be some athletes don't meet the academic requirements, but I know plenty of Oakland/San Jose/East Bay/ETC players who have the academics to make it in most schools, but UCD doesn't offer. One off the top of my head is TJ Taylor another player from Lillard's high school who happens to be his cousin who is getting offers from many schools. Davis or UCSB could be attractive to a Bay Area player but not so much as is with this coaching staff. What Ogden offers is a respected program, a relatively large fanbase with a large arena, and NCAA Tournament credentials. Weber State is a quality mid-major basketball school, and has done some good things in the Tournament which recruits take notice of.
