Hawks, as always, great information. And, agreed, Weber is treading in the wrong direction, which is worrisome. I still maintain that Randy is a good coach. As we all know, he really struggles with some things, but is really good at other things. For 13 years Weber Basketball has been competitive and at the top of the league, and as a fan I appreciate that (then again, for almost 60 years we have been the dominant program in the Sky). I'm extremely proud of Weber State Basketball and expect the program to be at the top. 8 years ago, there was a lot of talk about "following the Gonzaga" model. Building a program that not only wins the Big Sky, but wins games in the Dance. A program that becomes a "Sweet 16" program. It has been a few years since we have heard these things. When you create a contract giving a coach 8 years, you better expected wins and championships with it or you incur financial penalties.
My issue with Coach is that he has, by far, the most available for his team in the Big Sky Conference. The resources available to Weber compared to other programs is paltry in comparison. And frankly, the only thing he is really missing for parity in the state of Utah is a basketball facility (I really don't know why we would need this, other than it is what everyone else is doing. I'm sure he'd still use the Dee for practice). Randy gets paid almost 175K more than anyone else in the Big Sky, and in some cases, over 200K more. He has the biggest fan base, most glamorous legacy and history, best facilities, most money, and usually opportunity to grab the best talent. Weber usually averages almost 3000 more than the next Big Sky School and could average 5K-7K more if Athletics actually tried.
WHEN A LOT IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED...if Randy made 200K I wouldn't care about a 4th place finish. If Randy had a gym with 3500 seats, usually mostly empty, I'd be happy with a 4th place finish. When Randy doesn't have two 5th years senior bigs who have a combined 8 years of experience in the program, I'd be okay with a 4th place finish and a 7-5 DI home record. He has one of the best, veteran, mostly selfish, and experienced backcourts in the Big Sky and 5 returning starters. It is not okay finishing in 4th place. His recruiting budget is in the tens of thousands, we can actually buy guarantee games, and have TV contracts (even though we are the ones paying for them usually). Randy has a lot of famous alumni, not to mention other Weber State graduates who played under other coaches who can help recruit. He has history on his side and yet, we finish 4th place. When much is given, much is required (many of us understand this).
My problem with Randy is that he hasn't taken this program to the next level like what was expected. Loved his teams from 09-14. But, since another last mins flub in the Big Sky Conference Championship two years ago, it seems as if the ceiling had been reached and now he is following the Stew model. Coasting till he retires, just doing enough. Maybe after being here for 13 years, he finally decided to follow the rest of Athletics mantra of JUST ENOUGH. I don't know, but I expect more from Randy. He is one of the best guys I've ever known and I'm proud of the character he exhibits winning and losing. He is a class act. When he got here he broke his hand punching a standard during practice because he expected more from his kids. He needs to get back the drive and passion or he will end up fading out instead of going out on top as the greatest coach in Big Sky history.
