First Game In...

#11 Central Arkansas took out #10 Austin Peay last night. Star QB Jeremiah Oatsvall had a rough night for the Governors, largely due to the ineptitude of the offensive line, but he was certainly game. While the game opened with a bang when Peay went 75 yards on the very first play to open scoring, they bogged down until late in the fourth quarter when Oatsvall tied the score at 17 with a one-yard run, only to watch the weary defense cave, allowing what ultimately proved to be the game-winning UCA touchdown with about 30 or so seconds left. Oatsvall didn't quit, however, as he tried to single-handedly pull the game out of the fire. His gutsy 4th and 10 quarterback draw with 8 seconds left was good for a first down, but there were only two ticks left. It was all for naught, as the tired OL immediately caved in, allowing the UCA DL to mess up Oatsvall's Hail Mary, which fell woefully short.

Given all of the problems that have come up due to COVID, it is not surprising that this game was majorly affected. Peay's OL was decidedly not in condition, and the long snapper put one over the punter's head early, leading to a UCA safety and the switch to Oatsvall as the punter; Oatsvall was generally effective in this role, but he DID shank one badly. There was also some confusion regarding rule changes (maybe), as UCA was confused late in the game when they were called for delay of game on DEFENSE for a late substitution, which they either felt was NOT late, or weren't aware of the rule. The officials also were not immune, as there were glitches with hot mikes (on Peay's opening TD run, one official was heard to mutter "GD masks!"). There were also problems with the electronic whistles replacing physical whistles due to COVID concerns.

So college football is back, although majorly affected by COVID-related cancellations and re-scheduling. Peay plans three fall games total, including two FBS games, while UCA plans a whopping NINE. Cali teams remain on the bench, though. There is lots of FBS-FCS intermixing back East, while those of us out west are sitting idle. Nebraska is apparently preparing to sue the Big Ten over their cancellation of the conference season. No fall playoffs, but the potential for limited spring playoffs, and no word on how fall games (if any) will affect selection and seeding.

This will be one crazy season, that is for sure.

There will not be a spring schedule or games. They told these kids they will have a spring season and they LIED to them, horrible to play with these kids lives like this.

I am glad this game happened and the teams that play will get new fans, those that don’t may lose some.

I doubt spring football will work for either high schools or colleges. Might be time to just admit that if conditions don't allow for a fall sport to be played at it's normal time (or maybe with a slight delay) it might be more realistic to work for a reset next fall. That also goes for the rest of the sports as their seasons comes up.

It's usually an exciting time of year for football, but 2020 college fall "season" has stirred no interest in me. A sub-set of schools playing patchwork schedules feels more like an extended preseason than anything to care about. Over the weekend, I flipped through over-the-air channels and came across golf ("meh"), and a WNBA game (meh + players that took pride in walking out on our national anthem.) I'm hoping the NFL can make things work, but wouldn't be surprised if that fizzles out for COVID too.

+1. 2020's a heck of a year.

There's a very interesting game set for tomorrow night: BYU at Navy. This matchup hasn't happened since the late '80s, and it's the result of COVID-related scrambling. Should be interesting. No worries about Navy conditioning, but will BYU be ready?

Surprising that ANY UT-based schools are playing ANY sports, given that the University of Utah just bogusly furloughed their ENTIRE athletic department. Ugh!

Too bad this Covid has so many just giving up on football season? Social distancing and masks should be plenty of protection for fans if the spread out amongst SAC States Stadium.
COVID is nothing compared to TB which was never a world stopper like the over politicized Covid Flu.
Let’s get back to football like the rest of AMERICA and finish our conference seasons so that our teams can get some playing experience.
Time for University Presidents and AD’s to reconvene with conference commissioner to get this fixed and finish strong! 🏈🏈🏆
Thank You!

Right now the plan is still a Spring season and at least the NCAA has an end date...Championship Game to be played in Frisco, Texas on May 15, 2021 with a 16 team playoff (down from the usual 24) to begin April 18. So working backwards from there, the season would begin late February for an 8 game season and "Fall Camp" would start in January.

I want them to play RIGHT NOW as much as anyone, believe me! But it at least seems more realistic that it will happen starting late winter as opposed to not at all.
