First Practice

As the team gets ready for its second practice of the season, I though I'd share a few thoughts from last night's first practice.

We are athletic, and we appear to be pretty deep in the O-line (which is good because I'm sure we'll need it). Some of our O-linemen are learning to play numerous positions, which will give us more flexibility up front and allow for more rotation when needed.

I know we don't have a ton of experience coming back at receiver, but we do have some good ones. We're sure to be solid at TE with Josh Cook and the Tylers. Broc Malcolm is solid at wide-out, and I think we'll see our offensive system create some new stars catching the ball, just like it did last year with Chad Hansen (may he rest in Cal peace). Physically, Madison Mangum has come back as a beast. His question is can he take a hit and stay healthy. I think Aaron Prier will surprise some folks catching the ball and then running. After that, we have an entire stable full of fresh, young hands that will get opportunities to prove themselves, just like Hansen did last year.

Arias own the QB spot, obviously. If his experience keeps him from making some of the mistakes he made last year, and if the O-line protects him, we will be better than good with him. After Arias, ????.

The few kicks I saw Zak Johnson booting for PATs last night were impressive. He definitely kicks with more power and strength than Brendon Garcia was ever able to kick with, but we'll have to wait and see how his accuracy under pressure is.

Not much to say about the defense yet, except to say that the 1-on-1 passing drills were the most exciting moments of the night. The DBs showed the ability to keep pace (or better), and in some cases they were pretty physical, too.

Not much you can learn from a first practice.

Unfortunately, Claws, with the exception of the three scrimmages, all the rest of the practices are closed.

....I did read that somewhere Skippy....I was counting on you media folks having an "in"...and thought you guys could smuggle updates and observations....dang it foiled again.....

Well, I "do" have an in that allows me to attend practices when I can, for obvious reasons. My biggest problem is actually being able to find time to attend practices. For instance, I could not attend today's practice. I will do my best to see as much as I can, and will report on what I can say without giving away anything I shouldn't.

GO BENGALS!
