Football Locker Room Renovation Thread

From The Tribune:

• Portland State players arrived at training camp Monday with a new $200,000 locker-room facility at the Stott Center. For the first time, the entire roster will be able to dress in the same room.

The room has four sections honoring the four greatest head coaches in Viking history — Mouse Davis, Pokey Allen, Tim Walsh and Don Read.

It’s a big year for the Vikings, who need to make strides in Jerry Glanville’s second season but lost a lot of horses from last year’s 3-8 team. Glanville (67 in October) and Davis (76 in September) aren’t going to be around for the long haul.

Here’s hoping they stay long enough to get the program back on solid footing, and then some. But I wonder.

Football team enjoys new locker room

While many players christened their new football cleats, gloves and pads at practice on Monday, the football team was also able to use their new locker room inside the Stott Center.

Built adjacent to the old locker room, the new room features carpet, two plasma televisions and over 100 individual lockers set in four different sections of the room, each named after a former Portland State head coach. Don Read, Darrell "Mouse" Davis, Pokey Allen and Tim Walsh each have their own quadrant.

The director of new business development in the athletic department, Dennis Ferguson, led the fundraising effort on the project raising an estimated $225,000.

"This is really a nice addition to the building and a great step forward for the football program," athletic director Torre Chisholm said.

Great job on fundraising for this.

So we raised 225k in about six months to fund this?

That is just amazing for PSU, but I'll ask once again - Are we raising more money now because there is new interest, or are we raising more money now because the current administration isn't afraid to ask for money from those who've always been interested?

Amazing indeed. You pose a great question, but I can't help but think that Dennis Ferguson is really helping out in this area. I went to a 1620 Club meeting shortly after JG came on board, and Ferguson spoke for quite a while after JG had left the building. He was saying some great things that everyone wanted to hear, but it also had a lip service feel to it. I kept on thinking that he did have a tie to the local business community, but raising fund for Portland State Athletics is much easier said than done. It sure seems that Ferguson sure put his money where his mouth was on this project.

Makes me hope that we hear some fundraising news come out about The Stott Center. Start now, so that we can break ground as soon as the move to the new Rec Center is completed.

Still no picture, but an outstanding entry in Ian's blog about the remodeled locker room and the process that was used to achieve the project.

Weekend Feature: Locker Room Makeover Hints At Positive Future For Athletic Department

I'm glad to hear that the new locker room wouldn't really be affected by the Stott remodel. Otherwise, it would have been a waste of money.

I checked out the new locker room tonight...

To be honest, I'd never been in the old one, but from the look of a picture that they had up of the old one, I'd say that this is a drastic change.

Per someone in the Athletic Department, the construction took about 3 months, and still has some money to be paid off. 1500.00 for your name up in there. ;-)

The coaches room looks really nice as well. Big custom lockers made of some sort of a nice looking dark wood. There are two flat screen TVs in the main area in the middle, as well as two large whiteboards. I can really see where the comments came from the staff about not being able to address the entire team at one time in the locker room. The way it is set up, you could address the entire team and have everyone able to view the tv screens at the same time if you're trying to break down video or something.

This ain't the UofO, as this didn't cost 3.2 million. However, we should be really proud of this. It was needed, we raised funds, and got it done in a hurry.

Finally, some pics! Thanks Marty! :D

Sorry I only took a couple. There were a few people in there, and I didn't want to look like 'that guy' with the camera when nobody else is shooting photos. Well, except Norm Maves Jr. ;-) I got him in one of my pictures.

Thanks a bunch Marty. I would have liked to attended the open house, but I leaving town early tomorrow morning and had many errands. These are some exciting days at Portland State.
