Portland State president Wim Wiewel has directed that the PSU football team become self-sufficient by the 2014-15 academic year.
PSU spokesman Mike Lund said the move is one of a series of cuts the university is making to deal with a $15 million financial shortfall.
Lund said the football program received approximately $800,000 from the university’s general fund in 2013-14. The football budget is $3.85 million.
“We already had scheduled two money games next season,” Lund said, referring to nonconference road games against teams in a higher classification for which the Vikings get a large financial guarantee. “Right now we’re projecting $3.6 million in revenue.”
The Vikings, part of the FCS Big Sky Conference, will play at Oregon State and at Washington State of the FBS Pac-12 Conference next season.
PSU played at FBS California of the Pac-12 in 2013, and lost 37-30.
Lund said it will become more important for the Vikings to sell season tickets and increase sponsorship and marketing, but said there should be no concern about the future of the program.
“The obvious conclusion people jump to is, ‘You guys are going to drop football,’” Lund said. “No. This secures the program. Now it’s not reliant on the university. It’s on us to run the program efficiently and generate more money.”
David Hersh, who as president of the Viking Athletic Partnership will be responsible for ticket sales, marketing and sponsorships, said the move should be viewed as a positive one.
“I applaud it,” Hersh said. “It’s just good business. There is no reason we can’t be self sufficient.”
PSU football coach Nigel Burton expressed confidence in Hersh and athletic director Torre Chisholm.
"Obviously this will be a challenge," Burton said. "I talked to David and I talked to Torre, and I have faith in their ability to fill the gap the university has left."
