Don’t even remind me of this game. It was packed and there were not too many open seats open in the student section. It was by far the most attended game I went to while I was a student. It was a close game. The game went back and forth the whole time. If I recall correctly, the starting QB, Ryan Leadingham went down with a broken collar bone late in the game. I remember thinking it was over. But the backup QB stepped in and drove for a TD late in the game giving Sac State the lead. There wasn’t much time left. I remember thinking all the defense has to do is keep ucd from getting out of bounds and keep the clock running. ucd did have some timeouts remaining, but I don’t recall how many. Sac State kicked off and pinned ucd back, I want to say somewhere around their own 30. Sac State had it, it was their game to lose…Well, whoever was calling the defensive plays had the great idea of going into a prevent defense. From the interview with Amey, the “P” in “Prowler” must have stood for prevent. Any football fan with half a brain knows that a “Prevent Defense” prevents you from winning. It’s been proven time and time again…well this would be no exception. ucd ran three, YES THREE SUCCESSIVE draw plays to the RB right up the middle. The defense wasn’t even looking for a draw on any of the plays. They probably netted close to 50 yards on the drive using that play alone. I was in shock watching this unfold before my drunken eyes. I wasn’t sure if it was the five successive shots of patron I took from my flask that was making me witness this, or if it was really happening. Anyway, ucd drives and punches it in for a TD with only seconds remaining in the game. It was unbelievable. I have never been at a game where the crowd was so enthused to one that was so quiet and shocked in my life.
I honestly believe that this game played a major role in defining the Moosh years. It seemed as though the program never recovered, and Hornet fans had to endure the worst football known to man for the remainder of the Moosh era. Fortunately, Wanless did something right and hired a football coach who knows how to finish games. Sperbeck lead the Hornets to a Causeway win last year lifting the curse of the Causeway. The best part about last years win was that it was in ucd’s new stadium. I think the tide has turned. It’s time for the Hornets to take some revenge.
