On the surface, Fresno State's athletic budget appears to be doing just fine.
Dig a bit, though, and the Bulldogs clearly are in a world of financial hurt -- with no easy solutions on the horizon.
The Fresno State Athletic Corp. board of directors Monday unanimously approved an $18.84 million operating budget for fiscal year 2011 that projects a surplus of about $11,000. The budget now heads to the desk of university President John Welty.
Fresno State's problem is that revenues -- the lifeblood of any Division I athletic program -- are stagnant at best while expenses, even after years of belt-tightening, remain stubbornly high.
This also comes in the wake of recent NCAA conference realignment decisions that have weakened the Western Athletic Conference, to which Fresno State belongs, raising questions about the Bulldogs' future in Division I athletics
