Fuzzy math- defense

I was looking at a thread discussing our defense on AGS and got me thinking. If you were to normalize our scoring defense by just looking at the regulation against UNLV, ignore the kickoff return by Montana, and ignore WIU completely (anyone who watched that game knows it was an anomaly) the 2021 EWU defense is averaging just over 20 points a game.

I get that the word on the eagles around fcs is we don’t play defense. Seems a lot of our fans have internalized that as well. To my eye, this is the best defense we’ve had since 2010. Excited to see how it plays out the rest of the way.

Good stats! Am prone to agreeing with you that the defense is playing well.

I wasn't in the stands so don't know what others are saying, but this board it hasn't been too tough on the defense (anomaly aside). I don't view AGS very frequently so have no idea. I think Copp and Mullgrav have brought something extra to the defense because it's the same players out there this season essentially. Doyle at DB seems to be a key as well. My take in another thread:

Have enjoyed the aggressiveness of the DL all season and the safety play. Thought the LB's really stepped up in this game (Montana). It's hard to see everything going on during a play watching on TV. The corners did an outstanding job and many of the completed passes were thrown very accurately or else wouldn't have been completions. Kudo's to defense for playing a complete game

Just glad to see the defense make some meaningful adjustments and play to their level across the board. After the trip to Greely the five game streak of Idaho (who oddly has Eastern's number), Weber, MSU, UC Davis and PSU will test the teams mettle.

It's fair to say this, but you simply can't overlook the horrific performance at Western Illinois. I think we've played 3 good games defensively and had one absolute howler.

However, given the weakness of the defense over the last several years, the perception of Eastern is that we have a dubious defense. And giving up 56 at Western Illinois certainly makes it look like we're still a work in progress. Beyond that, it's also clear we've got some talent on D and are MUCH better than in the Spring.

Speaking of defense here's a bit piece on Doyle in The Spokesman Review https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2021/oct/07/he-shot-out-like-a-cannon-eastern-washington-safet/
