Game Ball(s)

Last time I issued game balls I acknowledged TJ's efforts but new he would get his share over the season so it went to the O-line. Alas for TJ, I think I will start a tradition/superstition and again deny him:

1) Matt Johnson - two picks, a recoverd fumble - he was everywhere as usual.

2) Dariel Beaumonte - 38 hard nosed and crucial yards on 7 rushes and a blocked punt and return for a TD. Montana always beats us with special teams so to score off a blocked punt and win one with a field goal is very fitting.

3) Coach Graham - dialing up blitz after blitz and staying with it even late in the game and after getting burned a couple of times. I really think our play calling on defense caught Montana by surprise.

Yep, was really surprised how well the defense did !! Game plan was right on and even though we got burned a couple times, Grahams blitzes showed he may be ready for the next step TOUCHEE !!! BLM had great success with the 10 and 15 yrd passes on that final drive, zipped em in there and right on target ! hope we keep that part of the offense going as well as a great effort by the o-line !! EXCEPT in the RED ZONE !! No FG's and TD's instead and that game's over at half !! Great win EAGS but it's OVER !!! Now it's gut check time MSU !! they're the real deal !!! GOEAGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't it delightful that the defense, an aspect of much preseason angst, has turned into a cause for celebration!

How great were both corners? Stuck in man almost all day, they never gave up anything and when put into one-on-one situations, they always made the tackle. I'm really impressed with how weel they are playing right now. Plus, our safeties finally had the kind of outing we hoped for... Minnerly is coming along nicely and made a couple of key tackles early on when Montana tried to test him.

For that matter, I thought Montana's corners also did a great job.

As a matter of fact, I'd go one further and say that was the best combined effort by our corners I've seen at EWU in the last 5 years. That's an area we've struggled in recently, but they really seem synchronized right now. And now that our safeties seem to have gotten the hang of their positions, our pass D will ikely be much improved.

And I almost forgot to throw a shoutout for Nicholai Myers and Will "The Thrill" Post... my God, what a pair of dominant performances. I'd bet 90% of our rushing yards came off right tackle because these guys just crushed their opposing DL all game long.

Kalm,
Sorry I didn't make it to the Trailer. I got there about 1:30pm. however, these knees wouldn't let me go to far. Arthur had me. (ARTHRITIS) .

Some dude sat behind me in shorts, smelled like a Rum Factory, he kept bothering me, punching me in the back to stand up, cheer, etc. I had to laugh, he looked like you, but skinny. I told him, I am trying to listen to the game, he said ok. Once Montana made the 1st interception, he got up and left staggering out of the area. He had me so damn mad, my daughter said, "Dad is mad, and our team is not behind" I think he went home to take a nap, if he could make it that far.

Our team played their butts off, our DEFENSE kept us in the game. I knew when I spoke to Bo Mitchell on Thursday we was going to have a great day, if we could keep our turnovers down.

Brandon Kaufman is an "Outstanding Receiver", he showed some B---s, to continue to play after he hurt his shoulder. I saw him today, told him he needs to show Nick Edwards how to go get those long balls. He is a little sore on the right shoulder. He said he will be ready for Montana State Game on Saturday. Spoke to Renard Williams, told him I was going to challenge him in the 100 meter dash, after I saw his burst of speed on the fumble to the end zone, I took back my challenge, He said "Vic leave it to you" and smiled. Matt Johnson didn't practice today, his legs were a little sore, he will be ready for Mont. State.

Spoke with the personnel at Northern Quest today, he said they will be showing our game on Saturday on the Big Screen.

EdubAlum/Wineguy,
Sorry I didn't get the chance to meet both of you. Maybe you will attend another game soon. Heard from Larry Weir, to check out ESPN on Saturday between 9 & 9:30am, Game Day, there will be a special on EWU/Red Turf, when it comes to EWU. ESPN was here on Saturday for the game.

HannahO,
Met the Hubby on Saturday, he came looking for me in my seats. What a day for our Team and University, to finish with a win on that Red Turf, "GREAT". Take Care. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

It's funny you mention ESPN, because I spent some time talking with their producer of the segment at the game. He was looking for interesting facts about Eastern to add to their story. I told them to get a shot of the watertower off to the NE of the stadium and pan down to the field to show how Cheney is just a typical smalltown that supports their program like it was the only professional team in the area. I told them to talk about how were winning WSU fans from Spokane because the Cougs have become so territble recently while we keep winning. It'll be interesting to see if they use any of my ideas in their segment. He said it would be about 3-5 minutes... I can't wait !!!

One other thing, I saw that same producer and his camera guy down on the field celebrating after we won. I think he really enjoyed his time at the game. I'd love to have them back if we get a playoff home game later in the year.

That is a terrific point about the corners, I was noticing the tackles too, and if you think about it, most if not all of Montana's completions were to the middle of the field.

Kalm,
I am sitting up here "lol" about you are like renard, if you are as fast as him going around the corner, with the fumble, you are FAST ;) . If you are going to be at Northern Quest on Saturday, you know where we sit.

Like EWURanger said this will be a tough game. We will win if we can keep our turnovers down. I love what Coach Baldwin said to our players yesterday, "Forget about the Montana Game", get ready for Montana State Game on Saturday.

Wineguy,
Happy to hear that you really enjoy being there in Cheney and the Football Function. I worked out there for 21 years communting from Spokane. I really enjoyed working for the University. Great bunch of young men and women at EWU past and present. I started there in 1974 as a Sergeant in University Police, worked my way up to Chief of Police. When I made contact with those students, I treated them as if I was talking to my own Children.

Hope you find something to do in Idaho/Spokane soon. You will love the people there in Idaho. I normally go over there to buy my gas once in a while and the friendly faces, and personnel you will notice.

Now that you will be settling down in WA. State, I am sure we will be seeing you at some of the functions @ Northern Quest. All of our away games are carried on the Screens, and there you will find another great bunch of us Eagle Fans. Northern Quest have been really good to us for the past two years, hope it continues for a while.

Remember to tune in to ESPN on Saturday, Collelge Game Day, between 9am-930am, there will be a special of our Red Turf. They even got one of our helmet, so when they come to EWU, they will show the Football Helmet. Got to go. Heading out to practice @ 3pm. "Welcome to the State Of Washington, especially Cheney,WA. you and your family. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

if we host a playoffs game, i will definitely be up. if you come to the Portland state game, we'll definitely hang out:)

EdubAlum,
I will not be attending the PSU Game, however, I hope we can make the Playoff, maybe a home game, or two. Reference the ESPN College Game Day, scheduled for Saturday, program will be between 7.00 am and 9.00am. I spoke with Dave Cook, Sports Information, he had given me the correct time. I also checked ESPN Schedule for that day, the time is as Dave Cook stated. I had the wrong time erlier this week. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace
