This has come up in another topic so I figured I'd give it it's own topic.
What would you all like to see at football games to improve the fan experience and add to the 'college football atmosphere'?
I am a huge fan of college football in general and have been to games all across the country. I'm sad to say, we do not do a very good job of providing the same college game day atmosphere that so many other colleges provide. Here are a few things I'd like to see change:
1. The Bands Involvement. I am a member of the Drumline and Marching Band at Weber State and I feel that the band plays a big part in the atmosphere. Watch a national broadcast of college football, you're guaranteed to see and hear the marching band and drumline. I'm going into my 4th year with the MB and have noticed that the athletics department seems to want us less and less involved every year. Go to a BYU or UofU game for example. Their bands and drumlines are playing between every play. We've been asked only to play at specifically allotted times. Sometimes there is nothing going on in the stadium, but, we're still not allowed to play. I'd like to see the band become a MUCH larger part of the game day experience. Last year, we were actually asked NOT to be on the field while the team ran through the tunnel. This seems like a step in the wrong direction.
2. Pregame activities. The 'tailgating' activities at homecoming last year seemed to be pretty well put together. I'd like to see more of that and at every home game, not just homecoming. Tailgating is part of what college football is.
3. Attendance. The more people we get in to Stewart Stadium, the more fun it is going to be. Some of this issue comes down to the general public, but, I don't thing Weber State does a good enough job selling the football team. It seems like our football marketing strategy is to litter Ogden with posters and schedules at local businesses and hope for the best. Is there not something more we can do to get fans in the seats? The Ogden area has over 80,000 people. How can we not put 12-13,000 in the stands for home games? Our football team has been pretty successful as of late, so I can't chalk it up to a bad team. Coach Mac has done a fantastic job of building a team that is worth watching.
These are just a few of my thoughts. I'd just like to see Weber State provide a better experience for our fans. I think that if we could do that, we may start to see the culture around the program change a bit. Maybe even start selling out games.
