Game Day Atmosphere

This has come up in another topic so I figured I'd give it it's own topic.

What would you all like to see at football games to improve the fan experience and add to the 'college football atmosphere'?

I am a huge fan of college football in general and have been to games all across the country. I'm sad to say, we do not do a very good job of providing the same college game day atmosphere that so many other colleges provide. Here are a few things I'd like to see change:

1. The Bands Involvement. I am a member of the Drumline and Marching Band at Weber State and I feel that the band plays a big part in the atmosphere. Watch a national broadcast of college football, you're guaranteed to see and hear the marching band and drumline. I'm going into my 4th year with the MB and have noticed that the athletics department seems to want us less and less involved every year. Go to a BYU or UofU game for example. Their bands and drumlines are playing between every play. We've been asked only to play at specifically allotted times. Sometimes there is nothing going on in the stadium, but, we're still not allowed to play. I'd like to see the band become a MUCH larger part of the game day experience. Last year, we were actually asked NOT to be on the field while the team ran through the tunnel. This seems like a step in the wrong direction.

2. Pregame activities. The 'tailgating' activities at homecoming last year seemed to be pretty well put together. I'd like to see more of that and at every home game, not just homecoming. Tailgating is part of what college football is.

3. Attendance. The more people we get in to Stewart Stadium, the more fun it is going to be. Some of this issue comes down to the general public, but, I don't thing Weber State does a good enough job selling the football team. It seems like our football marketing strategy is to litter Ogden with posters and schedules at local businesses and hope for the best. Is there not something more we can do to get fans in the seats? The Ogden area has over 80,000 people. How can we not put 12-13,000 in the stands for home games? Our football team has been pretty successful as of late, so I can't chalk it up to a bad team. Coach Mac has done a fantastic job of building a team that is worth watching.

These are just a few of my thoughts. I'd just like to see Weber State provide a better experience for our fans. I think that if we could do that, we may start to see the culture around the program change a bit. Maybe even start selling out games.

I totally agree, the band is a huge part of college football. I think our band should be just as involved as any. As a student and huge college football fan, I know that a well managed and talented band is a big part of the game experience. I think ours is pretty good but you can never have to sweet of a band. I think the stadium would seem a lot bigger if the audio was upgraded and some huge subs were added along with a speaker on both sides of the stadium.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if we had close to 12k at a game or 2 this year. We had 10k at UC Davis last year and our attendence has been up over the last few years. Were one more jump in attendance away from the place really looking full at least for a couple games. The atmosphere and noise at UC Davis, Northern Colorado and Montana was pretty legit, (UC Davis... now thats a legit band). I think it really just comes down to the students to create the atmosphere at the rest of the stadium will follow, the band is more then welcome to help with this.

Hopefully alot of fans come out this year to check out the new turf. I really think alot comes down to how nice the stadium is. To bad we dont have Washington griz :(. If we could get that endzone plaza built that would be pretty sweet though.

I don't ever remember a cannon and I have been coming to games for a long time. When did they do it?

Its been a while since they used the cannon, but they did used to have one, and they NEED TO BRING IT BACK

I heard a rumour from a friend that the guy running the sound at the Dee and Stewart is being replaced by a competant individual. Good to hear that Bovee reads the forum.
