Game Day Thread EWU 35 @ UNLV 33

Just getting this started. Not much insight aside from the fact we get to see many of the young men who would have matriculated out of the program if last year was normal. Excited for that fact alone. Don't know much about this team as I've blocked out the last game against Darth Vader U. Hoping for more poise and consistency as a whole team.

Two deep for UNLV:

Prediction... we'll see some of the newer faces if this gets away from us early. OL looks solid and there are some mature players on the defense. It should be the EB3 show. Will Chuckie Gruden be watching??

UNLV isn't Florida, so don't expect a blowout but Best hasn't shown any proclivity to winning these types of games. Has a real Bill Murray feel to it for me but I may be projecting.

This game will come down to whether Eastern can play any defense or not. At the end of last season, there was no defense being played at all. Those last couple of games were about as bad defensively as I've ever seen, and Eastern has been pretty rotten on D more often than not. If the DL keeps getting blown off the ball and guys can't take down a ball carrier it'll be a loss. I don't even really know what UNLV is good at, but if they've watched any film at all, I'd expect them to run on 3/4 their plays or more.

My hunch is Eastern is good enough to win this game. UNLV has historically been pretty damn bad. But if it turns into a military parade of each team walking down the field on offense, we deserve whatever we get.

Also, based on the way this season sets up, this is kind of a must-win situation. There aren't a lot of easy-outs on the schedule, so getting off on the right foot is especially important.

Read where they brought in through portal a 4* who QB'ed in high school in Vegas (Tate Martell). Think they are high on him started out for Ohio St. then went to Miami then into portal. He's getting some hype and speculation on my part they also have some good wr's there and if they want to win any games in Mountain West they will need to throw. So, they may be throwing to get some kind of flow going into league. 35-31 EWU

I remember Tate Martell coming out of HS. He was considered a top recruit. If they use him to run the ball, it's bad news for Eastern. If they think they want to chuck it all over the field, that probably plays better to hedge against our weaknesses. I have no idea what to expect from Eastern this season... in theory, we've got pretty good talent. But if the defensive front 6 hasn't improved by a light-year, it might not matter much. You really can't understate how bad our defense looked against Idaho and North Dakota State.

concur on all counts.

FYI: Here is a UNLV podcast: https://lasvegassun.com/podcasts/rebel-room/2021/aug/31/no-decision-unlv-quarterback/

They don't know a whole lot about EWU, they just go on and on about how bad UNLV is. They haven't named a the starting QB yet but the presumed starter was not on the 2 deep
list that was just released. That would be Tate Martell who had transferred from Ohio state to Miami then to UNLV. I read somewhere that he was recovering from thumb surgery.
the other two QB's both have real good resumes, one was rated as the #2 duel threat in the nation coming out of high school. They are both capable runners, one is 6-4 and the other is 6-5.

They also have a RB that led the Mountain West in rushing in 2019.

Good assessments all the way around gentlemen. I think UNLV is better than their record, at least their athlete's are. Given a few turnover's and some pinpoint passing from EB3 and Eastern could grab the upset. Hoping to be surprised to the upside by the D, win or lose. Have they tried sensory deprivation? Humor aside: Hope everyone who travels to the game has a great experience. Go Eags!

This song has been stuck in my head for days. Woke up with it playing. Guess it must be football season :-)

Ton of Big Sky teams playing tonight.

UC Davis at Tulsa
Weber at Utah
S. Utah at ASU
Sam Houston at NAU

Shittily ESPN is now putting most of these on ESPN+ instead of ESPN3... Dicks.

**as always, just my opinion and not indicative of managements perception of reality**

Defense playing great, but frustrating to watch this offense sputter. Such a dynamic QB and same old same old out of OC play calling.

Problem is defense will only get worse as game goes on. Can see UNLV figured them out.

EB needs to pull his head out of his ass.

Poor decision making has killed us so far. Offense is doing nothing, although that dropped TD pass was brutal. But man, what on Earth was Barriere doing on that INT? He had 20 yards of greenspace in front of him and just ignored it.

Special teams has been a liability, again. 2 missed field goals would've helped a lot. Plus, dear Lord, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT RETURNING A KICKOFF IF YOU WON'T MAKE IT PAST THE 25! I don't understand why Eastern so routinely does this. So far, we've started at the 17 and 9 yard lines. That's bad when the other team scores and you voluntarily take possession deep in your own territory.

Defense looks pretty good so far. Call me jaded, but we've seen Eastern Ds look good for a half and fall apart quickly thereafter. I'm hoping we've turned over a new leaf, but it looks like UNLV is gaining confidence and has finally realized they should just run the ball every play.

With EB3...I think he is gunshy right now to run...he is used to outrunning people and they are as fast if not faster then him but I get it if there is green pastures ....go for it!

This is not a pretty game, but ewu statistically should finish with a win. However they’re trying keep UNLV in it.
